Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

My doctor is great, really supportive, and always has time to see me regarding sickness (which is often). I've been to other doctors who have been unable to refer me as although very sick I had no keytones. This time I went straight to A&E (albeit I left it too late).

LucindaE · 11/09/2014 13:40

Welcome to Durhamreid Oh dear, you are in a bad way, I do feel for you,
looks like you've got it severely, but I am so glad that you're getting good treatment. People who've had to have steroids say they an work wonders.
How are you doing now, how's the treatment going? I hope Kalidasa stops by as she had it worse than anyone I've known on here and knows all about long periods in hospital while they try to find something that works.
It's a frightening condition, but Meerkakl's given great advice and as she says, with good treatment you and baby will flourish anyway.
Room Hugs. It's a long haul. I'm happy Lottieposting her happy news cheered you up. It will pass.
xx

Room that's exactly what I'm clinging to. This will be worth it...

Hi Durham sorry you're here but welcome and it sounds like you're being well cared for at least.

I've finally got the n&v back under control after a really bad week. I still can't believe going to a wedding wrote off my entire week. 46 days to go...

kalidasa · 11/09/2014 18:16

Hello everyone, just popping in.

Durham - sorry to hear you are in hosp, I was in almost continuously for seven weeks, total nightmare! Even on a massive dose of steroids they couldn't get me stable enough to go home until I was 14 weeks. But hopefully you'll get out much sooner. Re the cyclizine, I found it made me vomit when they gave it as an injection/bolus but once I was able to tolerate it orally it did go back to helping a bit. It seemed to be the sudden rush of it with a jab/drip that made the vomiting worse. I used metoclopramide in my first pregnancy but became allergic to it so couldn't have it this time. Ondansetron, especially IV, helps most people a lot so hopefully they'll be able to get this under control for you. Do be careful with the constipation on it though, especially when you are immobile and have been/are dehydrated as well.

Anyway I am 20 weeks now and doing a lot better, finally totally off the steroids. Struggling with the nausea which ranges from bad to overwhelming, still on cyclizine, omperazole and ranitidine, and unfortunately already on crutches with the SPD too BUT still a big improvement from a month ago, and I'm not actually vomiting that often. Half way through!

20 week scan was fine - huge relief - though took AGES on account of my totally hyperactive baby who apparently never sleeps (another one - great!). Also found out we are expecting another little boy, a little brother for DS.

Courage to everyone slogging away.

ToAvoidConversation · 11/09/2014 18:27

Kalidasa you are a total trooper. Glad your scan went well. Smile

Meerka · 11/09/2014 19:00

big grats, kali on the scan and glad to hear you're improving. wishing you a lot of strength for the last half

DurhamRed · 11/09/2014 19:46

Hi Kali I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a horrendous time with hg. 7weeks in hospital sounds a total nightmare!!

I'm unable to take metoclopramide or cyclizine orally or iv as they make me vomit badly within 30 mins. Ondansetron seems to be the one that works most, especially as they've doubled the dose. Have managed to keep lunch and dinner down today so that's something! I'm hoping that it will continue to work once the fluids are taken down. If it does then I can go home tomorrow... Fingers crossed!!

The last time I was discharged from hospital the sickness returned with a vengeance within a week and I couldn't keep any meds down at all, so I'm a bit worried that will happen again.

elizabethsmum · 11/09/2014 22:23

welcome to the thread Durham sorry you are suffering. you are in the right place for fantastic support.

has anyone else read DM article on hyperemesis today- interesting angle on the psychological effects I thought. was trying to post a link but can't seem to do it on phone (techno-phobe smiley )

waves to everyone xx

Meerka · 11/09/2014 22:34

no, can yo link it when possible? or tell us what to google ? :)

Meerka · 11/09/2014 22:43

oh doh, dm = daily mail. sorry

ToAvoidConversation · 12/09/2014 06:23

elizabethsmum haven't seen that article but they had a really good article (in comparison to normal daily mail) the other day about what hyperemesis is and how it's treated. Was tempted to send it to lots of people!

elizabethsmum · 12/09/2014 07:52

toavoid yes as you say in contrast to normal daily mail they have done some good research and realistic reporting of hg this time round! I will try and post link when on computer later meerka. hence why I had volunteered to speak to media via tamba the other day as I wanted to put a realistic point of view across to raise awareness. they said they will keep me in mind for the future so you never know!!

elizabethsmum · 12/09/2014 07:54

I always feel like I have to whisper DM article on mumsnet hence hushed tones however sometimes as in this case their reporting is subjective!!

elizabethsmum · 12/09/2014 07:55

*objective! doh

Oklahoma · 12/09/2014 09:50

That sums it up pretty well! Especially the 'knowing what she is going through there is no one I would less like to be'

Hopefully people will read the article and be more understanding!!

Meerka · 12/09/2014 10:25

what a good article.

LucindaE · 12/09/2014 11:22

Kalidasa How lovely to hear from you - and so very happy that things are looking up a bit, though nausea is awful - and great news about the scan.
Durhamred How are you now?
Oklahnoma I'm glad it's under control again. Horrible, at this stage.
Everyone That's the first good thing I've heard about the Daily Mail . Great about the publicity!

Sorry but I need to whinge. You know the whole thing of 'just keep eating little and often and you will feel much better' Hmm How can I do that when I manage a few mouthfuls before having to leg it off with my sick bowl/to the toilet? I seem to have exhausted my safe foods Sad

NoRoomForALittleOne · 13/09/2014 08:07

Oh, and they don't like to medicate round here until you are vomiting everything all the time. No chance of trying to prevent severe HG...

ToAvoidConversation · 13/09/2014 08:38

NoRoom who are 'they'? Your GP? Can you see someone else for a second opinion? Someone will be along in a minute with more information but I though the patient guidelines say that you should be able to expect a fairly normal quality of life? I'm angry for you.

Are you keeping an eye on your ketones?

Hand to hold for just now Thanks

Oklahoma · 13/09/2014 08:39

NoRoom that sounds grim. It sounds like you are already at that stage though, how come they won't give you meds?
