I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

At least people have an idea of what it is. Must be nice to have a team of doctors and get treated at home though. You could just get a wee drip going every so often and get all the drugs you need. Maybe she's actually lurking on here

Lottie.. Tried posting earlier but it crashed.. Hope today goes well!!

Booboostoo · 08/09/2014 11:27

For what it's worth my CS and recovery have been a walk in the park compared to pregnancy and HG. Yesterday, 5 days post CS, I walked with DD to the local shops for ice cream - I hadn't been able to do that at all in the last month of the pregnancy.

jenhad84 · 08/09/2014 11:35

Booboostoo I can't tell you how reassuring it is to read that. The thought of trying to look after twins and recovering is making me increasing anxious about CS!

Meerka · 08/09/2014 12:05

very nice for Kate to be expecting her second, sorry about the HG for her :/ Guess it was on the cards for her, if you get it once you are very likely to get it again, but there's always that chance you won't. Poor woman might be in bed trying not to move right now along with the best or worst of us.

I hope she can manage to avoid reading all the pundits advocating more ginger. Argg!

hope everyone is reasonably okay today

freneticfox · 08/09/2014 12:16

Feeling better today after an awful evening! My Midwife said it's ok to take one soluble Solpadeine for headaches; they're usually brilliant at stopping my tension pain in its tracks. Sadly I discovered yesterday that they now also make me feel very sick.

Was retching for a good two hours, yuck.

Meerka · 08/09/2014 12:47

frenetic, paracetamol is ok. just maybe that might be better? specially if you can get the .. I cant think of the english word ... the ones for the other end?

Obviously don't overdo it but at one stage I was on 1000mg of paracetamol every 4 hours for about 10 days.

freneticfox · 08/09/2014 13:15

Yeah I'm trying to be as sparse as possible with paracetemol. I was on three different painkillers before pregnancy for hypermobility and arthritis, so it's been a real struggle adapting to just the odd over the counter painkiller.

Was the first time I've had a really, really, bad headache with this pregnancy though, wanted to go straight for something I know works for me. Great choices we make eh? Have a headache or feel sick... hm.

elizabethsmum · 08/09/2014 16:26

Hi all sorry have been an absentee for so long- didn't mean to have totally abandoned the thread! Have not had time to catch up with the thread yet/ welcome newcomers / congratulate graduates with new arrivals so apologies in advance until I catch up! Was on standby to speak to media regarding hg via tamba today but unfortunately they had got someone else lined up ahead of me!

LucindaE · 08/09/2014 19:46

Hey, Fraggle I'm glad you are a lot better than you were and ML is in sight.
ToAvoid Was it you who braved a Chinise takeaway, I canl't find the post now? Sorry if I've nauseated you if not. I was going to say that was the hieght of bravery...
elizabethsmum Great to hear from you.
Meerka Sound advice as ever. Frenetic Sorry about foul headache - my syjmpathies over that, my migraines in the first fourteen weeks were
horrendous. I heard paracetomol was safe, too.
I hope Lottie is doing well.
I hope Everyone is coping today.

Hi all. Back from holiday yesterday. So much has happened on the thread I can't keep up. Pats and hand holding for all of you who are struggling.

Like fraggle not working really does seem to be good for me! managed to eat and to get outside most days. I reckon the sickness lifted on about day 2 of hols so at 26 weeks and 4 days. Incredibly weak and dizzy though but much happier now.

encouraging news about the c section booboo, I didn't do well in my first labour, still pretty traumatised tbh and been seriously considering an elcs so v good to hear a positive story, I'm pretty terrified either way about recovery.

ToAvoidConversation · 09/09/2014 04:40

Yes Lucinda that was me. I've been able to eat a fair bit taking the Odansetrone and cyclizine but I had half a portion and it killed me. Idiot. Won't be doing that again.

ToAvoidConversation · 09/09/2014 05:54

Up early... Nerves about going back to work and watching BBC news. Talking about "dramatic morning sickness"... Gives me the rage. If they seem some of the stories on here it wouldn't be so "dramatic"

Meerka · 09/09/2014 07:33

elle lovely that you managed to enjoy the holiday. So so nice just to get a few days' change of scenery. Good news that you can eat some again, hopefully it'll help get stronger. I found that when I started to be able to eat at all, the hunger became intense at the times I could eat and it took a couple of weeks before it settled down.|

avoid I hope work goes ok. on the good side of Kate's HG, the awareness of it in the UK seems to have improved radically since before she got pregnant with George with both ordinary people and medical people. Miserable for her, but incidentally she helped everyone else quite a bit I think.

jenhad84 · 09/09/2014 11:53

Hey All,
Well the Stemitel tablets didn't work at all. Went back to work yesterday and it completely destroyed me. Couldn't keep a thing down, it was probably the worst day so far. I felt completely beaten up by it.

The doctor has now signed me off for the week, she spoke to the hospital and they recommended a different tablet, I think she said Ondansetron. If this doesn't work then its a trip to the hospital. Anyone on Ondansetron? Any good?

I never imagined things would start to get worse at 14 weeks, I'd pinned all my hopes on them getting better by now! Is it time I come to terms with the fact that it might continue the whole way through?

ToAvoidConversation · 09/09/2014 12:01

Jen I found Stemitil completely crap, even when injected.

I'm now on Ondansetron and it works so so well. Only been sick a few days since I've started taking it. When first injected with it in the hospital I was sitting up with a wee smile compared to lying vomiting and unable to move. I'm also on cyclizine.

basgetti · 09/09/2014 12:09

Jen stemetil doesn't work for me either, I don't even bother taking it now. Ondanestron is very good but it can make you extremely constipated so you need to keep an eye on this (I can't take it anymore because of my bowel).

I got worse around your stage, and my first hospital admission was 15 weeks. I'm still suffering now at 25 weeks but I think each pregnancy is different. Hopefully the medication will work well for you and you will start to feel better soon.

Meerka · 09/09/2014 16:44

Ondansetron's the most powerful of the non-steroidal drugs. It's good. Just what basgetti says, you might need something to help you go to the loo. I got movicolon which was great, but I could drink at that stage. kali is the lady with the most knowledge of this, there's some laxatives are better with ondan than others.

btw, it's the drug that's had the biggest study done on it except for the very first line drugs, the weaker antihistamines, and it came out of the study very well for safety and effectiveness.

freneticfox · 09/09/2014 18:56

Ondansetron is fantastic but you will definitely need something to combat the constipation! My GP told me to take two sachets of Fybogel a day and prescribed me Lactulose and I still had problems!

I think aside from a few isolated incidents I'm coming out the other side of the sickness. Though now I've said that, you wait..it'll be back with a vengeance.

freneticfox · 09/09/2014 18:57

Oh and Jen - I had some of my worst days weeks 14-16, it's only slowed down since 17 weeks. I too was convinced I'd be ill full term, but it is getting easier. Hang in there x

LucindaE · 09/09/2014 20:32

Agh, ToAvoid and Jen, people on here generally try to go back to work too early. ToAvoid Hope your day went OK. I so agree that the stories on here would horrify most people if they knew Shock and Jen as others say, don't despair - most people don't see an improvement at the 'normal' time so don't despair yet. Glad you're on Odansteron.
Elle I am so glad you are a little better at last and enjoyed the holiday.
freneticfox And so glad you've reached a turning point.
waves to basgettiand everyone. Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.
xx

Quick post.

Totally agree on the going back to work too early. Being able to function at home is not the same as being well enough to go to work!

I also found Stemtil useless. Hopefully the Ondansetron will help.

Elletorrito · 09/09/2014 21:16

Thanks lucinda, it was just what I needed.

Agreeing about work, I was much worse the first time and I think a lot of it was working too hard. I impressed my bosses but looking back it wasn't worth it. Taken things much easier this time, working half days. But I appreciate that not everyone has a supportive work place and I'm v lucky.

Gd luck everybody, hope tonight is passable

elizabethsmum · 09/09/2014 21:42

grrrrr typed long message and lost it!!!

in brief.... have finally managed to catch up more or less with August!! Profuse apologies again for absence!

Totally, totally agree with not going back to work too early... being just about able to function at home is not the same as managing at work and imd once you are back at work everyone thinks you are fine and lets you get on with it. I had 10 guilt-free weeks off sick in second hg preg (the last 4 of which i was more or less ok but did not want to make mistake of going back too soon - bitter experience emotion!)

combo of ondansetron and cyclizine worked for me in second preg with stemetil reserved for taking edge of relentless nausea rather than combating sickness really.

In first hg preg weeks 15-23 were particularly rough for me I am afraid to report but then i did see some variable improvement after that. I had a lot more relapses first time but i think that is because i didn't take enough time off tbh.

elizabethsmum · 09/09/2014 21:44

ps- have seen that there are two of you having twins on here! Congrats and if you have any twin specific ques please feel free to PM me - ( I have an 8 yr old DD and nearly 4 year old B/G twins and had HG both pregnancies) x

ToAvoidConversation · 10/09/2014 07:10

As far as going back to work. My work are very supportive and although occ health suggested 50% I'm actually doing much less than that. I have one responsibility at the moment and the person covering me is continuing to cover all my other duties.

Stemitel took some sickness away (for a little while) but the nausea was always just as bad.
