scan at 7 weeks?

geordiemacminx · 31/08/2006 11:05

Hey all...

I'm currently 5 weeks pregnant after a m/c at 8 weeks. I am planning on having a private scan at 7 weeks, more for reassurance than anything else.. the problem is I dont know whether the 7 weeks is counted from first day of last A/F or from conception. The last thing I want is to go for scan and be told that its too early to detect a heartbeat cos then I will worry...IYKWIM? Many thanks

The 7 weeks is counted from first day of last period.

Blandmum · 31/08/2006 11:07

They can detect a hreat beat at 8 weeks using a vaginal probe. They could do this 10 years ago when I was pg with dd. I was sent for an early scan because I had a m/c at 8 weeks....the doc handled it v badly and was, I think, feeling rather guilty and sent me for one on the NHS

Pinkchampagne · 31/08/2006 11:08

I saw DS2's heartbeat on a 6 week scan.

geordiemacminx · 31/08/2006 11:15

They sent me for a scan at 8 weeks after pain and bleeding, and I was told that either I had got my dates wrong or the baby had stopped growing at 5 weeks...the sonographer wasnt at all sympathetic and was quite rude, hence I didnt really ask many questions, just went home and cried. I wish I had discovered MN then, certainly would have been better informed!!!

Its a bit hit and miss early on.

I saw a heartbeat at 7 weeks with DS. Nothing at all with DD at 6 weeks.

eidsvold · 31/08/2006 11:21

I had a scan at 7 weeks due to a worrying bleed with dd1 - they could detect a heart beat then... I was even unsure of my dates but they worked it out and no vaginal probe needed.

jabberwocky · 31/08/2006 11:30

Had one at 8 weeks with vaginal probe and they found heartbeat with no problems.

Good luck!

Piffle · 31/08/2006 11:31

From day of last period
I had my internal at 6wk 4days and sw the heartbeat and the yolk sac which teh baby was feeding off..

geordiemacminx · 31/08/2006 11:36

Thanks everyone.... guess I just needed a little reasssurance!!! I know things can still go wrong after 8 weeks but I will feel a whole lot happier once I hear the heart beating.

Good luck with your scan. I know how you feel. For me, there was no heart beat at 6 weeks but there was at 8 weeks.

Maybe you should leave the scan till 8 weeks - remember, it's calculated from the first day of the last period but it's assumed that ovulation took place at day 14 so if your cycle is longer and you ovulated later than day 14, you may actually be less than 7 weeks at the '7 week' mark, iyswim.

Hope it all goes well.

foundintranslation · 31/08/2006 12:50

I saw a heartbeat at 6+3 with ds, but, as others say, it can take until 8 weeks (with vaginal u/s).

Remember that heartbeat being visible causes your chances of miscarriage to plummet - so it is worth getting the reassurance.

Good luck! (I'm in a very similar boat btw - about 5/6 weeks pg now, straight after a mc at 6 weeks. Am having my next scan on 19th Sept).

Jasnem · 31/08/2006 12:54

Sorry to crash, but congratulations FIT. I will be thinking of you, and hoping it all goes well this time .

Good luck to you all having early scans. (I had an external scan at 7 weeks and saw a heartbeat for ds, but I know that this early not seeing a heatbreat means nothing more than it can't be found yet)

shhhh · 31/08/2006 16:29

gmm, I remember you from another thread about scans etc. Glad you are off for a scan and I hope it gives you the reasurrance you need. Like others have said the weeks are from the 1st day of your last period. DD was seen on an internal scan at around 5 weeks. Heartbeat as well.

Good luck , let us know how you get on. xx

madeindevon · 03/10/2006 14:56

if you have history of MC ask your doc to refer you to the early preg assessment unit at local hospital (i did)
last time had about 4 vag ultrasound......
no need to pay.
go see them and they will make sure you are ok. my local one were truely fantastic..

Elibean · 03/10/2006 15:04

7 weeks is counted from first day last AF, BUT unless you have a very regular 28 day cycle that can be misleading.
I had assisted conception, so knew dates exactly...in which case, you usually get a hb by 7 weeks. My clinic didnt' like to do scans earlier, in case it was too soon - but having said that, I had a bleed early on in both pgs so got scanned anyway - and have seen a hb at 5wks 6days this time, and 6wks 3days last time.
Twins can take a little longer to show up
Congratulations, hope you get lots of reassurance from your scan!

shhhh · 03/10/2006 15:09

geordiemacminx, notice this thread has been opened again...how are you now..? I hope all is going well..if so you must be around 11 weeks..?
Hope things are well.xx

Great news, the first few weeks can be awfully anxious if you've had a previous loss.
I'm 15 weeks this week and also had an early scan, which reassured me no end!

Jakesmum2 · 05/10/2006 17:13

Am new to mumsnet. First message. Very upset and looking for help? I have had a 7 week vaginal scan yesterday (could be only 6.5 weeks by ovulation test)and no heartbeat was detected. Strongly implied by ultrasound staff that this means that it's all over for us. Opted to go back next week for another scan then booked in for the 'tablets' to bring on the miscarriage if still no heartbeat then.

Really need to understand if I should have hope or not. Should I take their reaction as fact or is it possible that it was too early.

Can see sac and an outline of something but not very clear. Not bleeding at all.

Help please. I don't want false hope but can't cope with the prospect of giving up. This is baby number 2 but it took us a long time to get here and this pregnancy is much wanted.

shhhh · 05/10/2006 21:40

Jakes mum...I would post our question on another thread under a title of "no heartbeat at 6 weeks scan.." that way more people will possible read it...

I had a missed mc at 12 weeks and I bled with my 2nd pregnancy at around 7/8 weeks. At a scan the heartbeat was there but mirrored mine and apparently should be double mine. They weren't sure if it was the start of the hb or if it was slowing down..sadly my worst fears came true and I mc.

I have though heard some mner's who have not seen a hb but baby has been fine..not sure about the sac bit..I hope things work out for you as I know how worrying it can be..Sorry I can't help but post this under a new title and hopefully someone will be alone. xx

geordiemacminx , glad all is going well..!! You are nearly at 12 weeks so can relax a little.. I know how you feel though. I was the same with dd and now at 23 weeks I am the same with ds2b. I don't think the worry ever goes. BUT just happy things are positive for you. xx

kelly24 · 17/09/2007 23:47

orangehead · 17/09/2007 23:59

FrannyB · 22/10/2007 21:09

I've just found out i'm pregnant for the 2nd time this year after miscarrying at 8 weeks back in March. On one hand i want to get an early 8 week scan to put my mind at rest but on the other hand i'm terrified of finding out bad news and having to face up to it sooner rather than later. Is anyone else going through the same thing?

bloodsuckingLOONEY · 22/10/2007 21:48

I had MC at 8 weeks before ds and then ds was fine (but worried through most of pregnancy). Went to the Dr's today and was told I'd have to wait for usual 12 week scan. Got home and burst into tears. I know ds was fine but I just can't take my mind off it - every time I go to the toilet I'm checking, I can't bear it. I had discoloured discharge on my knickers earlier, hardly noticeable and nothing when I wiped but I can't help but think something is wrong. I know I'm hormonal and probably being paranoid but I can't stand the wait. Should I see my normal Dr and push for an early scan? If they refuse, how much does this sort of thing normally cost private? I feel silly be being so worried but I can't help it, I've got a bad feeling.

FrannyB · 23/10/2007 19:41

my hospital wont taking bookings for scans before 12 weeks but said if i'm prepared to go to the early pregnancy unit first thing in the morning and wait for an appointment they'll give me one. I'm going next tuesday - so scared. I had a private scan in my last pregnancy and i think it cost about £75. But the place was full of other very pregnant women who were all there for 3D scans so when I was told I'd miscarried it made the whole thing worse walking back into the waiting room. i'd recommend going to a hospital
