Brie? Bubbly? Sushi? Help

Hi everyone. I have just found out I'm expecting my first baby on 1 December. I'm a total over-planner and read a lot of books & medical studies on everything before we got the BFP, but with food I'm still quite confused ... the advice is all over the show.

I read Expecting Better which I found really helpful, and that, coupled with my own research means I'm comfortable with my usual one coffee a day (under 200mgs of caffeine) and 1- 2 units of alcohol a week in the first trimester (as a limit, not a target). I was a bit of a social smoker but I've knocked that on the head entirely.

The food thing, though, is really confusing me. No unpasturised cheese - well that's fine, all cheese where I am (NZ) is pasteurised. But then official information re soft pasteurised cheese (like brie, blue, camembert) is to only eat piping hot. Why?

I prefer my meat basically mooing in a paddock so well done meat will be a real struggle for me (but one I can live with if it's a real risk). But does the same apply to raw fish? I eat salmon sashimi at least twice a week from a good place, it's made fresh in front of us, been eating there for 4 years and never any problems. It seems like I can probably keep eating it? Some stuff says not to and some says it's fine.

I'm happy to go without various things if there's a good reason and a real risk but it seems like if I followed all the advice to the letter I'd be on dry crackers and not much else...

Are you in the UK on your work trip OP? UK lion stamped eggs come from hens vaccinated for salmonella. Very low risk. Far higher risk is the (not NHS banned) chicken takeaway, buffet or sandwich that has been sitting around in a meeting room.

Sorry to hijack the thread but you ladies seem to know everything about food risks!
I've just had black cod in a restaurant but I'm worried it wasn't cooked very well. I've never had black cod so I don't know if it's a different texture to normal cod but it wasn't opaque like normal cod goes.
Is there much risk if it wasn't coked properly?

hubbahubster · 28/03/2014 19:29

It'll probably have been frozen previously so probably fine ;)

Cupcake11 · 28/03/2014 20:24

I hope it was frozen but it was from an expensive sushi restaurant so I'm not sure it would have been Hmm

Still, it wasn't raw do hopefully it would have killed off any worms or parasites.

Does anyone know what the symptoms would be if there were any? As in, is it one of those things that you don't known you've got or would it make you really ill? Ie - when can I stop worrying? Smile

No I'm in Sydney Penguins but I gather risk of salmonella from eggs here is v v v low.

Cupcake I have been eating bit of raw fish (salmon). I think you'll be fine if its from a reputable source, especially because it was cooked.

DH has joined me and we went out last night for dinner - I eked out a glass of bubbly over 1.5 hours over dinner (world record - non pregnant me could have out away 5 in that time). Meanwhile DH had a few pre dinner looseners and 4 beers at dinner Envy

Standing between me and the glass is a massive kids party im hosting so it's not going to come anywhere near cutting it!

MissHobart · 29/03/2014 09:46

Cupcake - did you tell them you're pregnant? Most fish cooked "properly" in a restaurant will be slightly under done as that's how it tastes best, if they'd known they would have cooked it through. You'll be absolutely fine though, just something to remember in future! Smile

Gennz · 29/03/2014 09:49

God you'd need a bottle under those circs pomme!!

I took us to a non licensed Japanese place tonight so DH had to make do with green tea. Ha!

Misshobart, I didn't tell them I was pregnant although I'm 35 weeks so it's pretty obvious - I doubt the waitress made a note for the chef though.
I know I should have asked for it well done, I would have done had it been salmon, I just didn't think to with cod for some stupid reason!

Hare and Tortoise has a great range of veggie and cooked-fish sushi - went there tonight and had a blow out!!
