I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

petit oh no please take care. You may be even more dehydrated than you realise and your dh will want to take care of you. I hope you feel better soon.

petitlapin1 · 17/03/2014 18:43

Just sipping my 4th glass of water and a frube yoghurt brought time by lovely husband a few minutes ago. He greeted me with "hello, how much have you eaten today?" Apparently the kitchen being untouched today was a bad sign.

It's strange, I don't feel as bad as last admissions, i'm not vomiting but just don't feel hungry or thirsty. I think it's starvation ketones more than dehydration.

They say doctors make the worst patients...

Tallyra · 17/03/2014 18:53

happy birthday mrsb!

I definitely feel the correlation between tiredness and sickness. even now I have negotiated an extra hour in bed at work for my last week because I've been feeling so sick with getting up at my usual time. It's helped amazingly and my last week, looking like it'll be really busy, might actually be managable!

Meerka · 17/03/2014 19:39

You're a doctor petit?

tallyra you have your last week soon? :)

Tallyra · 17/03/2014 21:41

yep, this week!!!Grin

petitlapin1 · 17/03/2014 22:35

Yeah meerka, only a very junior one though.
Fish and chips for dinner, a yoghurt and an ice cream later and my ketones are down to 3. :)

Booboostoo · 18/03/2014 05:42

Belated happy birthday Mrs B!

Glad you're feeling a bit better petit

Meerka · 18/03/2014 07:45

Oh neat tallyra, only 4 more days then :)

Hehe grats petit ... at least if anyone comes to you with HG they won't be talking to someone who isn't sympthetic! glad your ketones are improving

mrsb87 · 18/03/2014 08:35

Thanks everyone for the happy birthdays Smile

Im home again which is making me a little bit sad. I'm hoping if I carry on improving this week I will be able to go back to work! Yay! I'm waiting on a phone call from my manager to talk about how to go about it as there will be aspects I won't be able to cope too well with eg.new clothes smells fresh out of the plastic yuck!

Ah I'm glad you're starting to feel a little better petitlapin.

Hello everyone!

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 10:08

and of meerka you three ladies are all due so soon!

June feels like a marathon away.

LucindaE · 18/03/2014 10:18

Petitelapin If you're a doctor you'll understand the biochemistry regarding ketones and that whole business about sometimes it's dangerous dehydration, sometimes it's starvation. Congratulations on struggling back from that level. Hope you're feeling a bit better. How were the GP's about meds, as your a medic yourself? Interesting, do you think your experience tempts you to specialise in Hyperemesis?
Tallyra I didn't realise you are still working, my goodness, I knew the sickness was back, but not that you were still battling into work.
I hope Everybodyis coping not getting to the 4+ level?
xx

It's ok Lucinda, I haven't been nearly as bad as the HG at the beginning, it's more like tiredness sickness and if I get enough sleep I seem ok. I even managed not to take any more meds once I got the extra hour arranged.
So happy I'm nearly done though!!GrinGrin

Nayz · 18/03/2014 12:33

Hello all,
This is my first pregnancy and I had Hyperemesis up until week 20. I'm now 32 weeks and SO happy its passed.
I know its a premature, but I always wanted 2 or 3 children and am already worried I will get it again next time.
Is there anyone out there who had HG with their first, but not their second pregnancy?
I have heard of many people who didnt have it with the first but did with the second.

Many thanks in advance!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 18/03/2014 12:38

I didn't have it with my 1st, a dd, just bad MS
I did have it with my 2nd, a ds, terribly
I had it again this time, a ds, not as bad as 2nd time, or maybe I just know better how to fight it/ what to expect/ am mentally prepared

ChaffinchOfDoom · 18/03/2014 12:41

2 ham salad baguettes 2 packs French fries crisps and handful green olives for lunch Grin with ice cold can coke and a caramel bar

won't be eating like this next week haha.

just been shopping for more hosp bag bits, got some nice juice cartons, some s & v snackajacks, choc chip cereal bars and posh biscuits. No way I'm going to be feeling hungry awaiting crap meals in hospital Smile
also got the kids' a little pres from their new baby brother - lego kits.

Tallyra · 18/03/2014 12:48

Aww finch, sounds like you are doing brilliantly today! I keep trying to start the hospital bag thing and I've got as far as pads for me and clothes for bub. I'm at a stage here where I want to get things done but all I want to do is sit on the sofa or in the sun. I'm hoping that next week when the time off starts I can really get stuck into things.

PunkStar · 18/03/2014 13:03

Nayz
On second HG preg, this one physically worse but dealing with it psychologically a lot better.
Started pre-emptive treatment the minute I found out I was pregnant. Had it until the end in first pregnancy and looks like it's running a similar course this time.

The odds are you are more likely to get HG if you've had it before however not 100%......so someone has got to be one of the lucky ones :-)

petitlapin1 · 18/03/2014 14:45

GP was very understanding when I went for meds. One of them made me almost daily appointments when my ketones were 2+ as apparently drs make the worst patients and are less likely to seek help early... hums innocently

Having said that... (Rant alert) ketones are back to 4+ today even after that massive tea yesterday! Still not vomiting excessively, just think it's accumulation from the last week which is difficult to come back from. Promises to listen more to lovely mother hen and everyone on here.

Called hospital, who very helpfully commented "who told you it was hyperemesis?" and have told me to see GP. No GP appointments for a week, except book on the day ones. Dont have the energy for 2 bus journeys to the walk in centre, and would rather avoid a&e as not technically an emergency as not vomiting much.

If I could specialise in HG straight away I would Lucinda, but the training pathway to get to that specialisation point is immense!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 18/03/2014 15:05

petit

when I had it in my 2nd pg, I used ketostix, and rang maternity ward direct, who told me to come in as I sounded like I knew what I was talking about.

did you ring your maternity ward? or gyne depending what week you're in
you may also be offered a bonus scan

ChaffinchOfDoom · 18/03/2014 15:07

if you get no joy, petit, I must insist you go to a&e!

if you're back up to 4 ketones, it's time to quit this fight and get some help!! or buy some rehydrating stuff off amazon and set up your own drip Grin

ChaffinchOfDoom · 18/03/2014 15:08

that reminds me how my old doctor in Manchester asked me to talk to 3 medical students about HG, and my appalling birth story with dd; I remember their faces...so young and so horrified Grin Grin t'was much fun

PunkStar · 18/03/2014 15:12

Petite
What do you want to specialise in? OH will be a consultant next year, has been a long slog as he changed from acute medicine to dermatology (got caught up in the whole change to MMC thing and can't for the life of me see what benefits it's brought, except made it harder to change specialty) I personally think medics with an interest in HG are more on the ball than obstetricians...they are not frightened to prescribe!

Booboostoo · 18/03/2014 16:30

Nayz I've had mild versions with both pregnancies. No vomitting but constant nausea and aversion to a lot of foods and drinks. It was miserable with the first pregnancy and it's worse with the second one.
