What clothes/sizes did your newborn fit into?

I mentioned this elsewhere but couldn't see the replies so will ask here. I got advised by my mother not to buy 0-1 months as they can be too tiny for many newborns (mum's were all 8 1/2 lb +). I guess my questions are: What did you have prepared for new baby size wise? Did it fit? And when did you make most of your clothing purchases, near term, or over the pregnancy?

DS was 6lb 3oz and tiny baby was a bit big for him and lasted until around 6 weeks when i put him in 0-3m stuff.

I didn't buy any newborn/tiny baby and he originally went into 0-3 when he was born and it was ridiculous. I was adamant that all sizes before 0-3m were just a ploy to make more money but we needed them in the end. Only bought a few bits though and got good use out of them as he was in them much longer than expected.

Shroomboom · 16/03/2014 20:16

DS was 6lb13 and was in newborn for a couple if weeks iirc, and dd was 8lb4 and went straight into 0-1 month stuff.

chattychattyboomba · 16/03/2014 20:16

DD was 10.5lbs and fit 0-3 months for about 2 weeks. Then 3-6 months until about 4 months, then went to 6-9months (by 9 months she was in 12-18 month sizes) she's now almost 3 and I'm buying her size 4-5 so a little bit if an exception to the rule maybe.
I would suggest though bigger is better. Rather too big and grow into them than too small and never wear.
I gave all the 0-1 month clothing I bought to the hospital to all the other babies who were 5lbs.

Lozcat86 · 16/03/2014 20:21

DD was 4lb 6oz and the prem clothes were too big, she was in prem/tiny baby/newborn clothes for first 2 months then 0-3 months. She's now 5 months, and 12lb 13oz and I have just started putting her in 3-6 month clothes and they are too big lol

penniespigsandpewter · 16/03/2014 20:25

Both mine were straight into 0-3 - 8lb4 & 9lb13. Dc2 was in 3-6 at 6 weeks

Boris13 · 16/03/2014 20:26

I would buy alot of 0-3 months, just basic babygrows, so can be ok in all weather temperatures.
Also a couple of newborn babygrows and vests, as well as some in 0-1 month....

PurplePidjin · 16/03/2014 20:32

DS spent the first few hours of his life snuggled up to me and wrapped in a blanket because all the Up To 1 month stuff I'd so carefully washed and packed was enormous! (6lb3)

Unless you or your OH are larger than average I would get the 1m stuff and have someone on standby to pop to the nearest supermarket. It stupidly didn't occur to me that 5'4" dp and me would produce a small baby Hmm or that unlike apparently most first babies he'd arrive at 38 weeks

Quodlibet · 16/03/2014 20:32

Mine was 6.2lb and we had to do a Tiny Baby dash. She is 13 weeks and still too slightly small for a lot of her 0-3 sizes.

theborrower · 16/03/2014 20:43

DD was 5lb 4oz and the sizes we'd taken to hospital (newborn I think) swamped her so my mum went to mothercare and got early baby stuff - still massive :-)

I definitely wouldn't get too many clothes to start with, chances are they'll be wrong! :-)

PurplePidjin · 16/03/2014 20:55

I've just leant my Tiny stuff to a friend, we had 5 vests and 3 baby grows. IIRC that was plenty, although he wasn't a sicky baby and we were in cloth from day 5 so no leaky nappies :)

Sirzy · 16/03/2014 20:56

DS was 6lb 15, he was in tiny baby/early baby until he was 3 months old.

ScooseIsLoose · 16/03/2014 20:58

I had a variety of new born and 0-3 sized things but ended up having to send dh out to buy tiny baby as dd was 6.12 and newborn was too big

5OBalesofHay · 16/03/2014 21:02

Tiniest sizes as 3.7 lb when born 6 weeks early.

RiverTam · 16/03/2014 21:02

tiny baby. She was 6 lbs and even newborn stuff swamped her, and 0-3 months was ludicrous. I didn't believe the midwife when she said I was having a small baby, so didn't get anything in and had to do a mad zoom to Mothercare!

PurplePidjin · 16/03/2014 21:02

Oh yeah, make sure you've got something warm that fits to come home in - DS was a November baby, put him in the beautiful 0-3 padded snow suit I'd got him and the arms, hood and legs were completely redundant! The whole of him fitted in the body of it Grin It was Easter and warm before he was big enough for it, complete waste of a fiver Wink

hubbahubster · 16/03/2014 21:03

DS was 6lb 13 and was in tiny baby, then newborn until he was a couple of months old at least. We were told he would be 8lb plus so took 0-3 and it swamped him! This time I have a pack of plain white sleepsuits in newborn for DC2 since this covers up to about 11lb, I think it's pretty unlikely she'll be that big!

misshoohaa · 16/03/2014 21:10

Mothercare newborn are about the right for a 7lb - 8lb newborn.

The sizes really vary, John Lewis sizes are massive, DS didn't fit in the newborn sizes till he was about 8 weeks old!

I think Next and H&M were pretty well
sized but you can certainly get a range of 'newborn' sizes!

cafecito · 16/03/2014 21:11

Like others have said - depends on size of baby

DD at >6lb was too tiny for newborn clothes except the very smallest varieties and some tiny baby versions

DS was about 9lb, he fitted newborn/ 0-1 butnot for long at all, like.. days..

mrsbug · 16/03/2014 21:31

Dd, 5lb 5, was in tiny baby. She didn't go into 0-3 months till she was about 4 months old.

Artandco · 16/03/2014 21:37

I just brought one pack of babygrows in newborn (5 in pack from John Lewis), and x2 packs in 0-3.

Worked well as wasn't too expensive etc. and just added nice cardigan/ hat/ booties to change the look

Abzs · 16/03/2014 22:18

DS was 8lb4 and in newborn until he put his weight back on, then 0-1. He went into 0-3 bodysuits at one month for body length, but they were rather wide on him. We only had 0-3 sleep suits, and he kept getting his feet up into the body for the first few weeks.

Abzs · 16/03/2014 22:23

As others have said, all the different brands fit differently. Should have said we started with Tesco stuff, which I've found over the months to be smaller sized, and Boots stuff, which fit rather bigger.

Skiingmaniac · 16/03/2014 22:29

Ds was 7lbs 3oz and wore NB - he's now a 7 yr old in 9-10 clothes!
Dd was 6lbs 2oz and wore tiny baby

stuckindamiddle · 16/03/2014 22:44

Had to buy tiny baby from Mothercare when we got home as newborn was too big despite him being 7lbs born. He lost 10% of his birth weight in first five days though.

5madthings · 16/03/2014 22:49

First three went straight into 0-3 mths, ds4 was 10lb 13oz and long and went straight into 3-6mths.

None of my boys were scrunched up, they all stretched out straight away!

Then I had dew, 8lb exactly and she was all scrunched up, such a shock aafter my first four. All my stpuff drowned her so my mum nipped out and bought some newborn stuff, she wore it for a few weeks.
