What clothes/sizes did your newborn fit into?

I mentioned this elsewhere but couldn't see the replies so will ask here. I got advised by my mother not to buy 0-1 months as they can be too tiny for many newborns (mum's were all 8 1/2 lb +). I guess my questions are: What did you have prepared for new baby size wise? Did it fit? And when did you make most of your clothing purchases, near term, or over the pregnancy?

DD was 8lb 7oz and was in newborn which were still a little bit big on her. She went in to 0-3 at around 5/6 weeks.

9lb baby, wore 0-3 months for a week. Thankfully everyone had expected her to be tall and bought everything big so only 5 vests / babygros wasted. Smile

Ds1 was 6 11 and newborns were baggy on him

Oh gosh, it really does vary, doesn't it? I think we are being overly prepared. I was given a tiny baby sleep suit and onesie, but we haven't bought a thing that size, then we have bought a few sleep suits and one outfit in newborn and we have loads of 0-3 stuff, but we have packed up the tiny baby, newborn, and a small selection of 0-3 in labelled ziplock bags for the hospital bag.

I should add, though, that some of our 'newborn' stuff is h&m size 1-2 and polarn o pyret size 0-1. We actually laid out the clothing and compared how big they were to split them into the three groups.

No idea what baby will be like, as my family and H's have a wide variety of newborn weights and lengths!

The thing is you can order different sixsizeses and have them delivered quickly so not the end of the world if don't have everything.

I agree re the baby bundlers/eighties. They are great, so I would take one of those to hospital as it doesn't matter likewise if it's too long. Plus a cardigan, hat and blanket to tuck baby up with for going home. Oh and vest under obviously and little socks if you want, gap socks stay on best ime.

ds1 was 10lb4oz born, and very long, we had to go out and buy 0-3 which while long enough were far too wide.

I only brought 0-3 for ds2 who was 10lb6oz but they were too big, and we brought 2 packs of newborn size. he only wore them for a few weeks but at least he didn't keep getting his arms and legs caught up in them.

dd1 was 10lb2oz and in newborn until about 6 weeks old. she lost a fai bit of weight as I had gestational diabetes which is why she was so big.

dd2 was 6lb7oz and in tiny baby and then newborn, we seemed to skip 0-3 and into 3-6 after that.

Can any of you second time mums answer a question for me?

Vests v babygros- do you need both?

My baby will be born in late june, so i assume that some of the time at least he will be wearing vests ONLY? i got some in Next (newborn) that have short sleeves and no legs- so was wondering if these, with socks, will suffice during the house in the daytime?
My mother reckons the hospital will be cold so he will need vests, babygros hats and socks.. i am so clueless!! i also seem to have way too many vests and not enough babygros.

TheGreatHunt · 18/03/2014 11:26

Unless we have heatwaves you will need both vests and babygros. UK weather is dodgy!

I didn't bother with hats in hospital and you're not in there that long unless something goes wrong.

5madthings · 18/03/2014 11:30

You will need vests and babygrows unless very hot. The hospital will be warm! But baby shouldn't need a hat indoors.

In the summer you can get short sleeved babygrows with little short legs, ds1 and ds2 are July/Aug babies and wore those a bit but with a vest under. Tba a vest helps hold nappy in place etc as well.

My Dc were born at 8lb13, 8lb2, and 8lb10 in birth order! I found they all lost weight in the early days (bigger tend to lose more in those first 3-5 days) and they were all in newborn clothes for a few weeks.

I think 0-1 months is not a common size (IIRC it is only H&M that do this size) - but is a really useful one as it is a little bigger than newborn but a little smaller than 0-3.

My kids were drowned in 0-3 for the first month or so despite all being born over 8lb and IMO it was definitely worth having a couple of packets of newborn size (or 0-1) as they looked more comfortable (and cuter) in properly fitting clothes! The babygros are so cheap it's not worth trying to make a false economy.

stuckindamiddle · 18/03/2014 11:46

I had a summer baby. The postnatal ward at my local hospital was unbearably hot! The midwives still wanted babies to wear hats too...! Bear the temperature in mind for you too. Take a mini
fan and cool nightwear and clothes. You're v sweaty for a few days after giving birth, regardless of temperature too.

PurplePidjin · 18/03/2014 12:21

Socks over babygrow helped when they were a bit long - I preferred that to scrunched toes when he was in between sizes.

Babies need one more layer than you're wearing. So, if you're in pyjamas and dressing gown, they need a vest under a sleep suit/babygrow then a light cardi over the top. Some babies run particularly warm of cold, have a feel down the back of their neck to check :)

My DD was born in March and was put in vest, babygro and hat in hospital, and the MWs swaddled her in a blanket and taught us how to do it. Hospital was roasting, much warmer than our house is normally. Got her home (having sent DM out to buy hats) and the community MW came round and promptly went 'no hats indoors, and no swaddling because it increases SIDS risk, but she should be wearing a cardigan, have a double layer of cellular blanket over her and the house should be warmer.' Confusing much? Hmm

This baby is due in July so I shall definitely be saying no to hats/swaddling in the hospital. Am not looking forward to the heat of the hospital - it was incredibly uncomfortable in March, so I shudder to think what it will be like in July.
