I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Wow those a scary stats, makes me realise how lucky I am to have a good surgery of doctors that are very willing to help.
It doesn't take a lot for me to get tired these days, really wanted to watch the brit awards last night but I was asleep before it even started! Missing swimming and my aquajog sessions too. I get tired and have to sit down even after hoovering 1 room. I gave up trying to keep my house up together Blush
Does anyone else really struggle with smells? I have 3 dogs who I love to bits, but I cannot deal with the smell of them atm. They don't smell to anyone else and neither does my house but I'm currently hiding in my bedroom because the smell downstairs is awful to me. Wish I could afford a cleaner!

PunkStar · 20/02/2014 10:38

Thanks all!
Don't feel so failure like re exercise now. Have a preg Pilates DVD, will try and motivate self to attempt.
Swimming sounds a good idea, it's more the thought of getting there and the whole getting ready that puts me off.

MrsB
I think the smell thing has subsided to a more functional level for me now. To start with just walking back into my own bedroom would make me vomit. I could smell breath! It was quite intolerable, walked around with lemon rind under my nose and chucked lemon essential oil everywhere.

Will still vom if someone has bad breath or I just pick up on an odd smell but is infinitely better.

Those horrible stats....reminds me of HG preg número 1. Third tri still puking 5-6 times a day, no one really knew what to do with me, I just gave up in the end.
Remember lying in recovery after CS repeating 'I don't feel sick, I don't feel sick!!' Was happy happy joy joy. Oh yes and there was a baby :-)

Meerka · 20/02/2014 10:51

laughing Oh that reminds me of last time punk .... " YES I don't feel sick any more! yes! oh YESSSSS! ... Oh. Nice baby too" 3 months later I was still on a total high :)

still surprising any of us go on to have a second, isn't it?

mrsb the smells were awful in the first and second trimester. Absolutely awful (along with the taste in my mouth and the excess saliva). I think it's another common trait of our enemy, HG.

kalidasa · 20/02/2014 11:44

Hi all, a few of you may remember me, I had a pretty shocking time in 2012 (first admitted at five weeks and still throwing up in the delivery room . . . ). We are gearing up now to ttc §2 in the late spring/summer. We are treating this as a MILITARY operation and trying to be as prepared as possible. I started a thread on whether there's anything we've missed/not thought of but no one has replied yet (sniff!). If any of you feel like having a look I'd be grateful!

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/2002310-preparing-for-severe-HG-followed-by-severe-SPD-anything-weve-not-thought-of?

Otherwise I guess I should say that I'll be back . . .

LucindaE · 20/02/2014 12:55

MrsbMy OH frankly stank to me. I used to be over at the other side of the bed with a lavender sachet held to my nose...

Hello ladies,

Hope HG is being kind to you all today. Finally after several medication trials I've found one (domperidone) that seems to work sort of. I'm still nauseous, and smells can set off a vomit sesh, but am generally down to one or two times a day, which is excellent. Finally maintaining weight which is brill, had lots of scans to check baby, a couple of days behind, but no major concerns, and it's a girl! So excited!

kalidasa · 20/02/2014 13:53

Lauranne that's interesting, domperidone is the one drug I didn't try (had cyclizine, thiamine, stemetil, metoclopramide, ranitidine, ondansetron). I won't take the metoclopramide again as I was on it for ages and by the end I was twitching constantly from the neurological side-effects. I want to avoid ondansetron as much as possible because although it did help it wasn't a massive help for me and I found the side effects nearly intolerable. I had a friend though who had domperidone during chemo a few years ago (sadly she died last year) and she mentioned that it was excellent. Have you tried ondansetron too? How does it compare?

Lauranne · 20/02/2014 13:59

Sorry about your friend x Yes have tried ondansteron (apols for spelling my phone doesn't like it) and metoclopramide and they were ok but I was still losing quite a lot of weight from being sick. So far (touch wood) I'm maintaining, the ideal is to gain but maintain is better than losing. Feels weird to say that after dieting for the last year! Really hope you find something that works well soon x it really is miserable x

kalidasa · 20/02/2014 14:48

Thanks Lauranne. I'm not pregnant now, am planning the next one but it is interesting to hear about anything else I could try. How far along are you? I lost weight until about 10 weeks I think, and didn't get back to my pre-pregnancy weight until I was about five months. I did gain a normal amount in the end though, even though I never completely stopped being sick. They scanned me a lot but DS was fine and was a normal weight at birth.

PunkStar · 20/02/2014 16:15

ChafofDoom
Sorry forgot to mention re your comments...
That is amazing that you feel normal!!! I hope I get me some of that too!

SPD sounds awful...I had a mild version towards end of last preg. Tried to do too many lunges at 36 weeks (with a kettlebell!!!) to make up for six months of zilch. Pelvis did not like this behaviour and punished me for attempting to gain a less wobbly thigh. Oooo I remember not being able to turn in bed and having to crawl backwards to the bottom to go for one of many night urinations. Lesson to all; no lunges from 36 weeks.

mrsb87 · 20/02/2014 16:35

Oh no punkstar! Sounds awkward. Luckiky for me I dont do a lot of exercise apart from swimming and dog walking, never really put myself under a lot of pressure tobbe less wobbley! Until this hg eases up or buggers off completely I won't be doing any of the sort.
Mil and fil came and saved me from my cave and they cleaned down stairs for me. They have been very good about all this. My mum is coming up next week and haspromised to spring clean the place for me. I'm so used to keeping my house at a certain standard (with 3 dogs I have to!) And not being able to has been hard. Dh runs his own landscape gardening company so by the evenings he's pooped!

Lauranne · 20/02/2014 16:40

Kalidasa I'm 20 weeks on Monday :)

starrynight123 · 20/02/2014 17:00

Thanks everyone for your lovely messages! I’m sorry I’m so hopeless at proper replies - I find it a bit overwhelming because there are so many messages but I read all of them.

Slice of Lime oh, hey, great to hear you had a good experience at UCLH! Yes, that’s the one I’m at. So far, everyone has been fantastic. Results come through the post very quickly; I got a phonecall from the midwife I saw at my first appointment when she got the results of my blood/urine tests and found that I had a slight urine infection (erm, sorry if tmi!!) and passed this on to my GP asap. I’ve got liver issues, so I have an appointment with a Dr at UCLH next week. Not sure what will happen then.

mrsb87 I’m taking metaclop. too and finding it very helpful. I tried Avomine before that and it didn’t do anything for me except put me to sleep shortly after taking it - found that really off-putting and anxiety provoking. But, I used to take domperidone before getting pregnant for my emetaphobia and found it helped me a great deal.

Exercise: so glad I’m not the only one not able to do any. A friend recently suggested pregnancy yoga. It sounds great but the thought of going to a class... shudders. At the moment, the occasional walk (2 times a week) and getting in and out of bed is all I can manage.

living sorry to hear about your migraine... really hope it eases up asap. Not sure it is fair that we have to deal with the joys of being sick/nauseous as well as things like headaches, nevermind migraines!!

Out of curiosity, does anyone else sleep sitting pretty much upright? I have a duvet rolled up behind my back with a pillow on top to help prop me up. I find lying flat makes me feel awful.

mrsb87 · 20/02/2014 17:35

Starrynight wierdly enough I fine at certain times of day makes me nausea worse with added heart burn. ...but only in the evening and late morning.
Mirroring what starry said to living about the migraines, really isn't fair you have to deal with that on top of the hg.
I think trie avomine too, it bearly touched the vomiting. Iccouldn't even give it a full 24hr trial it was so bad!

LucindaE · 20/02/2014 17:53

Sorry, Kalidasa and SliceofLime I somehow missed your posts - lovely to hear from both of you again. SliceofLime I hope not to bad now?
Kalidasa I certainly could never forget you. I used to think as you are admitted once again, 'What can I possibly say to make her feel a bit better, in spirits though not physically? Shock. I'm sure I may have tentatively recommended Acupuncture during your last, and Osteopathy might be worthy a try for SPD and that's all I can think of. Did they try steroids on you?
Re sleeping position - I remember sleeping on many pillows was the only way to make the heartburn bearable.

Hey ladies, just checking in. Has been a busy week - Matthew is 8 days old now. Hope you are all as ok as you can be - but fwiw - the sickness is gone, as is the SPD, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Meerka · 20/02/2014 20:01

oh lovely to hear jen. Is he letting you get any sleep? if you didnt mind, another pic would be lovely. I keep looking at the one you posted before and feeling encouraged. He does look so adorable.

PunkStar · 20/02/2014 20:22

Jen
Love hearing how all your symptoms have come to an end :-)
It is such great encouragement....we will feel well again!

ChaffinchOfDoom · 20/02/2014 20:34

I think there is something particularly evil and exhausting about hovering, it must use mega core muscles or something, it kills me to do a tiny bit of carpet.

saw dentist today. pregnancy super-smell-sense could identify he'd been eating jammy dodgers. what kind of a hypocrite?
he encouraged me to give up my coca cola habit. hot water and lemon is better......... Sad

ChaffinchOfDoom · 20/02/2014 20:34

godammit HOOVERING

ChaffinchOfDoom · 20/02/2014 20:38

Hi Jenn Smile Thanks lovely to hear all is going swimmingly

Hi kalidasa Lucinda has referred to you on older threads as one of the worst cases - you are very brave to go through it again.. hopefull it won't be quite so horrific for you
this is my 2nd HG pg and I have found it easier for a few reasons
a) mentally knew what to expect
b) wasn't scared of being admitted as knew the procedures
c) had this thread Grin
d) knew the disease is self limiting
e) could demand ondansatron as I knew it had helped the 1st time
f) expect far far less of myself - am enjoying lots of naps & minimal housework and saying no to visiting family

mrsb87 · 20/02/2014 21:30

Ah jen its nice to know there is a glimmer of hope at the end of this long dark tunnel!

Chaffinch I managed a whole room the other day. Go me! The family visits are all thats keeping me going atm. I'm getting super lonely while dh is at work, I moved away from my home town when we got married and so haven't got many friends around to just drop in. Uber excited for my mum's visit next week!

LucindaE · 20/02/2014 21:57

Jen Lovely to hear from you with such an encouraging message - He does look an angel - he came out looking like that to charm you after giving you such a hard tme for nine months(grin).
Chaffinch Oh dear, I had to laugh at the thought of a Hyperemesis sufferer in advanced pregnancy actually hovering - Wink. Some may like exercise, but this is ridiculous. But SPD is of course, no joke, it sounds agonising, worse than sciatica.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 20/02/2014 22:32

Grin I hover. In a zen position, floating gently down to partake of more cocacola.

LucindaE · 21/02/2014 08:36

Grin Chaffinch. Glide down to a gentle landing, not on the stomach. Are you one of the diet coke fanciers, or the full sugar ones?
