I'm 6+4 and plan to tell people I'm on antibiotics over Christmas to explain why I'm not drinking but a friend is now bringing her friend who's a nurse, which antibiotics for cystitis would I take for 7 days to cover xmas and new year which you can't drink with?. If they ask me what I'm taking I'll be stuffed and my secret will be out!! Thank you.

I think the general consensus is that the antibiotics line is a bit of a give-away anyway Smile. People seem to have more success nursing one glass all night (if it's a boozy situation no one really notices), or getting your own drinks and opting for something like G&T without the G. Good luck Smile

Shaky · 22/12/2013 22:18

Metronidazole is the one you can't drink with.

Congratulations!

PenguinsDontEatStollen · 22/12/2013 22:19

Hate to break it to you, but your secret is almost certainly out anyway.

Very few people actually believe the antibiotics line, especially if they have kids themselves. They just pretend they do to be polite and avoid putting you on the spot when it is obviously too early to announce.

I have smiled and sympathised soooo many times, whilst waiting for the big annoucnement and secretly eyeing up what people avoid eating.

But if you just don't want the awkwardness, it Metronidazole, I was reliably informed recently. No idea if they prescribe it for cystitis though.

zinher · 22/12/2013 22:19

Metronidazole is the one you can't drink with.

Writerwannabe83 · 22/12/2013 22:20

The only antibiotic you definitely can't drink on is called Metronidazole and is typically used for toothache Grin

Can you change your diagnosis?? Xmas Grin

sleepdodger · 22/12/2013 22:21

What sleep thief said
I managed 2 weddings inc best friends at 6 weeks with the holding and swapping drinks noone suspected except mob who thought dh was being super aattentive Blush

batteryhen · 22/12/2013 22:22

It is metronidazole but they don't prescribe that for a UTI. I used to tell people I had been out the night before and had a skin full so that's why I am not drinking tonight :)

NameToBeDecided · 22/12/2013 22:25

Oh dear! We're with family for a lot of it too and my bil insists on being bar man every time. I might just drive or nurse a drink when we're out but don't know what to do about the family. My sil for one will notice straight away if I refuse a drink (very unlike me normally Blush)
I've had 2mc this year and we'd told people we were going to wait till at least the new year before trying again but got s bit lazy if you know what I mean. It's stupid but I really don't want anyone else to know until 12 weeks.

PenguinsDontEatStollen · 22/12/2013 22:27

If close family know you've been trying, can you not just say that, after everything that has happened this year you're trying to do every tiny thing to maximise your chances and get super healthy before trying again. Or that you've decided to start trying now? That's quite believable if family know your history. Can also explain funny behaviours around food, early nights, etc.

Sorry for your losses.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 22/12/2013 22:28

I think the antibiotics line is bit of a give away, sorry.

I think nursing one drink or being the designated server is much more convincing.

Congratulations! Thanks

NameToBeDecided · 22/12/2013 22:31

Wow a lot of replies while I typed. Thank you!
I only said UTI cos I'm prone to them but can't remember what they normally give me, although I know I can drink on my normal ones. I guess people are gonna figure it out, I've done it myself but kept quiet and acted surprised.

OP posts:
imme · 22/12/2013 22:32

My excuse was that I still had to drive but not sure if this works when with family? What if you just tell the truth but then say it's still early days?

Tigresswoods · 22/12/2013 22:33

Antibiotics line. You will so be rumbled.

BlindKitty · 22/12/2013 22:34

Top tip..appletiser in a wine glass..fools em every time haha! X

NoArmaniNoPunani · 22/12/2013 22:35

Best idea is for you to get the drinks in. Order yourself a soft drink that looks like it could have a shot of spirit in it.

NameToBeDecided · 22/12/2013 22:37

penguin I quite like that idea thank you. If they think we're trying now or soon certain people are less likely to try and press me to have one.
Thank you all, given me some good ideas. I haven't really laid the seeds for the uti yet so no real back peddling to do either Xmas Grin
off to bed no, too tired! But I'll check back tomorrow, not ignoring you. Thanks again.

nickeldonkeyonadustyroad · 22/12/2013 22:37

i'd go with "I'm not drinking because I read some research that said we might be more successful if we don't drink" get dh to stay sober too to give it credibility and off you go.

FortyMerryFuckers · 22/12/2013 22:38

When I was preg I took my own vodka which was actually only water in a vodka bottle so every drink I had was only watered down juice only works if you are the only person that drinks a certain drink though.

NameToBeDecided · 22/12/2013 22:39

Imme after the mcs I just don't want anyone to know yet. I can't even explain to myself exactly why so please forgive me if I don't try to here.

OP posts:
Butterytoast · 22/12/2013 22:44

Just stay the uti is making you feel sick/ temperature and you can't stomach the thought of alcohol. You could also say the dr advised not drinking alcohol for a while to see if it stopped your recurrent uti's as he thought it was a contributing factor due to dehydration ;)

AnUnearthlyChild · 22/12/2013 22:56

I am really prone to UTIs and I find as soon as it am getting one I really cannot stand alcohol. The thought turns my stomach, and if i dohave a drink, it irritates my bladder beyond belief.

The antibiotics they give me are fine to drink with, but there is no way I'd drink until about 2 weeks after I'd finished the course. Just too painful a nod likely to trigger cystitis and start the whole thing rolling again.

So that might be believable.

Tomkat79 · 23/12/2013 00:15

Say you're taking metronidazole for a severe case of bacterial vaginosis...that should do it. Totally legit too :-)

DirtyDancing · 23/12/2013 00:47

Drink tonic water all night and pretend it is a VnT or GnT. Worked for me, that and virgin mojitos ;)

brettgirl2 · 23/12/2013 06:10

grape juice looks exactly like white wine.

Just be grateful you don't feel too sick to go on Christmas day is my advice.

brettgirl2 · 23/12/2013 06:13

Yes or as someone else said if you actually had cystitis you couldn't really drink could you? The abs excuse is pathetic, I remember we went out with some friends of dh and his wife pulled that one. The strange thing was that I didn't know her that well and up to. That point had just assumed she didn't drink, when the abs were mentioned I knew she was pregnant Grin
