I'm 6+4 and plan to tell people I'm on antibiotics over Christmas to explain why I'm not drinking but a friend is now bringing her friend who's a nurse, which antibiotics for cystitis would I take for 7 days to cover xmas and new year which you can't drink with?. If they ask me what I'm taking I'll be stuffed and my secret will be out!! Thank you.

I got through a very boozy Christmas at 8 weeks pg by swapping my drinks back and forth with dp so the level kept going down but no-one noticed I wasn't drinking it. He got very, very drunk though ...

PinsAndNoodles · 23/12/2013 11:08

Ooh, was about to start a topic with almost this exact topic but my problem is that it's just me and my ma (plus DS (6) Grin ) for five days of Christmas and there's no way that she's going to believe a lush like me is off the booze for any other reason.

I would just 'fess up but I'm only just 4 weeks but had a MC at 6 weeks a few years ago and she asked me not to tell her so early again Sad

PenguinsDontEatStollen · 23/12/2013 11:58

Hard one Pins. I mean, if you are in such close quarters she'll probably notice you not taking antibiotics wont' she.

You could do the tooth infection one, perhaps laying the foundations with a trip to the dentist today or tomorrow? If she doesn't want to know, hopefully even if she suspects she won't dig?

hubbahubster · 23/12/2013 14:29

It's amazing how unobservant drunk people are. I did a night in, just me and my BFF, with a couple of bottles of wine. She didn't notice a thing. I just nursed the one glass all night while she got sozzled! And I am usually a big drinker. I did the office free-for-all Christmas party too.

Antibiotics is a huge flashing sign that says 'I'm pregnant' IMO. OP I totally sympathise as I told no one this time or last time until 12 weeks due to prev MMC. It is totally do-able, just don't bother with lame excuses and quietly don't drink.

PinsAndNoodles · 23/12/2013 14:31

I'm just crap at out and out lying y'know? I was stressed about having to fake it at lunch with friends yesterday but actually two other people were cold-y, one was driving and DP started wittering on about how we'd had too much Wine the day before so a group decision was made not to bother opening a bottle - easy. But we're going out for birthday drinks in town next Sunday evening, way harder!

I think I'm just going to have to tell her, seriously, in my family, having NO Wine at Christmas... you'd have to be dying.

DontmindifIdo · 23/12/2013 14:40

Congratulations!

So instead of 'antibiotics' you need to be ill. Text today, "god, I'm really ill, coming out both ends, not sure if I'll be able to join you all for Christmas" Then this evening "beginning to feel a bit better, hopefully I'll be on the mend in time." then go, don't wear any foundation (for me, this makes me look ill!), and say you're not 100% so will stick to soft drinks, or accept one glass of wine, take 2 sips and say loudly "oh god, I think I'm going to be sick." rush to the loo, come back saying, "ok, so I think I'll move on to water!" and then stick at water or fruit juice saying "god, just the idea of it is making me feel peeky." This also allows you to say you feel a bit ill at the idea of pate or prawns or anything else you shouldn't eat.

If anyone directly asks "you're not pregnant are you?" you go with "God, I thought the only upside to feeling this rough is I'd lose a bit of weight, but now you're saying I look pregnant! I'm vomitty and fat, great." They will then say no, of course they didn't mean you looked pregnant. If you can then loudly say "XXX is saying I look pregnant, I've not gained much weight have I?" and get other people saying no of course not.

All that not-drinking was for nothing for me Sad. Started M/C on Sunday.

Hope not the same outcome for you Name.

LittleMissRedSparklyBaubles · 31/12/2013 12:55

Was reading through thread and couldn't not post - so sorry Pins to hear your sad news.

Alanna1 · 31/12/2013 12:57

I used to get sparkling grape juice, and liberally top up other people with prosecco. A few times my glass got topped up too (& then had to be replenished afresh) but it worked brilliantly.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 31/12/2013 13:38

So sorry to hear that PinsAndNoodles
