Open to all elderberry grads and anyone who fits the berry criteria: over 30, pregnant with #1 after trying for a loooong time, and nervous as hell. Come on in for handholding and nub theory!

Haha, 'the front burger', nice image.

Not much of a bump (17 wks) here but you lot must be massive by now. Can't wait to start feeling some movement. There's definitely a strange new feeling in that area but it's not distinct kicking yet.

PoppySeedBun · 13/01/2014 12:51

Hello all
I should point out that my Braxton Hicksare entirely self-diagnosed, and could well be just wind (and wishful thinking!) Smile

Chortling at the graphic scans Shock
I found out the sex through the Harmony test results, so I feel that we haven't been paying the same amount of attention to her 'bits' during scans - one to look out for this week!

Big hugs to those who have moved/are moving. I'm finding it hard enough to contemplate clearing out the spare room wardrobes! Wink

brod know what you mean about dads-to-be and girls - my DH has become a bit of a strident feminist in the last few weeks.... (About time too Wink)

CatsCantFlyFast · 13/01/2014 14:00

Is anybody doing kegels? Does anybody know how to do them properly?

Brodicea · 13/01/2014 16:00

I'm trying to remember to do them, but I keep forgetting. A top tip for remembering apparently is to leave stickers in specific places as a reminder (but only you know what they mean).

I'm not sure I'm doing it right, but apparently you should imagine that you are stopping your wee mid-flow. I always feel a bit like I'm squeezing my bum rather than my 'front burger' though. One of my pregnancy books says to squeeze ten times quickly and then hold for ten seconds a further ten times.

Thunderpantsarego · 13/01/2014 16:27

We've been talking about how to do them in yoga. You can isolate different parts of the burger too, altho takes a bit of practice. I remember to do them a few times a week at the moment- not enough I fear!

BlindKitty · 13/01/2014 18:46

Pmsl @ the front burger!!! I so wish our sonographer had said that!!!

merk kinda starting my kegals. Do prob need to research them properly as think I'm already having issues given i think a little bit of wee comes out after I've finished Blush. Maybe we need a daily reminder in here???

BlearyeyedLol · 13/01/2014 20:25

Loving the front burger description!!!! I'm crap at remembering kegels too but ten fast and ten slow ones is also what I've been told!

kat thanks for the tip. Will try and find it now

Thunderpantsarego · 14/01/2014 08:15

Oo kitty did you find it? Does anyone fancy posting a link?

Brodicea · 14/01/2014 10:06

I had a look and it might be this thread - an expert wades in part way through with a load of advice on doing the exercises: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1945070-Running-with-poor-pelvic-floor-what-is-your-solution

Brodicea · 14/01/2014 10:06

The expert is 'gussiegrips'

CatsCantFlyFast · 14/01/2014 10:24

Well done Brod. Weirdy I realised I have read this woman's twitter feed before but its not really something I'm going to publicly follow! I like this quote... " I tweet, you twitch your twinkle"... Shame she can't make it alliterate with the front burger Grin
Anyway I am assuming/hoping she won't mind me quoting to remind us all..

  1. Hold for a count of 10 seconds. Imagine you are bursting for the loo and trying to "hold on". That feeling is you working your pf. Clench for 10 secs, when you let go you should feel a "drop". No "drop" into your gusset and you've lost the contraction, so work on it! 10 seconds is a magic number as there's a reflex inhibition of your urge to pee, basically, it'll buy you more time before you HAVE to go.
  1. 10 quick flicks. Same contraction as #1, only "on, off, on, off, on, off etc". This is for the fast twitch fibres, the ones that should work when you do something foolish like jump on a trampoline.
  1. 3 floors - imagine you've got a lift in your vagina (I know, it's a weird thing, but, it works) Take the lift from the first, to 2nd, to 3rd floor and back down again. It's a mula bhanda from yoga - works a treat.

Do those 3 exs, x3 day for 3 months. Keep breathing when you do them, holding your breath is cheating. If you get pain, stop. If you're not sure what you're doing, either have a look with a handmirror (you'll see your fanjo sort of lift as you do the contraction) or bung something willing into your vagina and give it a squeeze. NHS recommends a finger, but, there's no research that says it absolutely HAS to be a finger - just something to squeeze. Whatever motivates you's good.

Thunderpantsarego · 14/01/2014 12:05

Cool, thanks ladies.

3 sets of exercises 3x a day is so much to remember and actually do!

I'm still a bit worried about sleeping position too. My mw said that it's fine to sleep on your left or right side but I know there are reports that say otherwise. But if I try and stay on one side all might I end up mega uncomfortable and then awake. What's everyone else doing?

BlindKitty · 14/01/2014 12:27

Thanks guys. I think one of us should remind each other every day (I'm bound to forget so I vote brod Wink

thunder my mw said not to worry about sleep position. She even said I could sleep on my back for now and that it should only be a problem once it's uncomfortable for me to sleep like that anyway.

CatsCantFlyFast · 14/01/2014 12:28

Thunder I went looking for the research on which side to sleep on and basically there was no difference (left side to right side) and a negligible difference from side to back. But the study does explain its not really reliable as its based on what people said (Ie I slept on my back etc) and obviously nobody knows which position they are in when they are actually asleep! Therefore I am not worrying and sleeping in any position I can

Thunderpantsarego · 14/01/2014 12:40

That's reassuring, thank you ladies Smile. The main thing that concerned me was from the Expecting Better bible book, but even that says how limited the findings were.

I will sleep easier!

Thunderpantsarego · 14/01/2014 13:02

NB: am more reassured by berries than my
Midwife.

Kat those exercises give me a super bad back so suspect I'm doing them wrong too!

BlindKitty · 14/01/2014 19:35

I have been duly doing my pf exercises at every chance today although I will forget all about them tomorrow

Speaking of dreams I had a lovely breast feeding dream last night. Felt this lovely bonding on my dream but then the dream changed and I remembered I had another baby who I forgot to feed (prob something to do with the fb thing I sent to boom). Thank goodness I'm only having one baby haha!!!

Boomgoestheweasel · 14/01/2014 20:03

kitty all my baby dreams are ones where I have one baby but am vaguely aware there should be another one but I can't remember where I put it Hmm

thunder I sleep on my back. I've tried both sides but it hurts my hips and I always wake up on my back anyway. So much for it getting uncomfortable at some point...

Thanks for the reminders to do pf exercises...never remember!

Had a lovely if brief trip to London, kept getting those ??braxtons while we were walking round though and they were actually quite sore, so it was slow going and didn't do as much wandering round as I'd have liked. First time I've actually felt affected in some way by pregnancy. Felt slightly worried that the babies didn't seem to be moving as much as usual but they've been booting me the whole trip home so probably just me being paranoid!

How're the new pads merk and brod?

OP posts:
Foodylicious · 14/01/2014 20:51

boom I had to read that twice then re pads, you had all been talking about pelvic floor so much I got confused!
How you guys settling in to new homes??
(quietly admits to having to wear pads despite doing pelvic floors am having issues Blush, recent cough did not help matters!)
I can't seem to get this sleeping on your back is bad thing out of my head! I know now from what I have read over the last month that it really isn't that much of a big issue but find myself waking up constantly therough the night thinking "oh I am on my side, good" or oh I am on my back, not so good" either way I keep waking up and its the first thing that pops into my head, some nights might only wake up half a dozen times, but others it really seems like every 20 mins or so.
Might treat myself to a mattress topper as the beds not exactly uncomfy, but I might be better with one.
Back on the promethazine and still feeling queezy, bleugh...and bloody headaches.
Also brief TMI alert, but tried to DTD for first time since conception the other day (have been super nervous and paranoid) and it did not go well, was just really uncomfy. Stupidly got upset afterwards, OH was great, said it was fine etc but mentally I really wanted it to be ok/good and just have the first time out if the way. Think its was most likely uncomfy because it has been so long Hmm !!! poor OH he is very patient. Once it was a bit uncomfy I just could not relax and was worried it would somehow irritate my cervix etc etc, ridiculous I know, but once its in your head...
Anyway, has been good reading your updates, feel more reassured about relaxing and sleeping on my back (lets just see if my half asleep self remembers this later??)
And will continue to do Pf exercises
And boom (never thought I would say this) glad you got a good kicking on the way home!
can't wait to start feeling some movement Smile
