Decaf tea just doesn't cut it does it

You know how you get that ahhhhhhh feeling with your first sip of a much needed brew? Since getting my BFP I've switched to decaf (typhoo) and it doesn't quite feel the same.
Can anyone share any decaf brands which have the caffeinated effect?

Caffine gives me headaches so have been on the decaff for a while.

Tetley and pg tips is gross, the best ime has been shops own brands, morrisons own is very nice as is sainsburys.

I had Decaff tea with my first child (not sure how I did it. It's vile)

I'm pregnant with the 2nd now and drink two mugs of PG Tips extra strong!!

I love my tea too much and couldn't face going back to that dish water!

ItsAlwaysBetterOnHoliday · 26/11/2013 08:14

I've decided to cut down on tea rather than cut it out altogether - love tea too much to bear the thought of going without for nine months!

I have a proper one in the morning and occasionally another one at work, or I go for green tea instead (less caffeine than black). Think that means i'm basically around the NHS guidelines... ish.

Am telling myself that not drinking any coffee and missing out on booze and proper cheese at Christmas means I deserve at least one vice!

I heard Clipper do good decaf, but I'm afraid to spend the money only to find out it tastes like soap...

I think the Twinings decaf Earl Grey and English Breakfast are both good.

EmB1715 · 26/11/2013 21:24

Bear in mind that most decaf is made by using chemicals to strip the caffeine out of the tea!

PedantMarina · 26/11/2013 21:29

Twinings English Breakfast do a nice decaf. I honestly couldn't tell the difference.

TBC, I never drank tea for the caffeine, just the lovely "tea-y" smell and flavour, and the decaf is fine for that.

Congratulations, by the way!

Eminybob · 27/11/2013 04:22

Thanks marina Smile

I didn't realise I drank tea for the caffeine either until I tried decaf!

I'm surprised Clipper brand not mentioned?

Lovely decaf tea, expensive, but amazing. Sainsburys sell it.

kiwiscantfly · 27/11/2013 09:30

For those who said they thought the UK had lots of food guidelines, try living in NZ! I had my DD 3 years ago in the UK and now we're home and the list is three or four times as long!

Re tea I drank tetley and pg decaf but as decaf tea is twice as expensive as normal tea in NZ I googled how to make my own. I make the tea and then after ten seconds pour out the tea holding onto the bag. I then make another cup with that bag and apparently it's now decaf, huzzah!

Xenadog · 27/11/2013 16:01

I have switched to whatever decaff was cheapest but I make sure that I leave the tea bag in for AAAGGGEEESS! Then I get something which resembles tea! I also have a couple of real cups of tea or coffee a day as some caffeine is not a problem.

Don't forget cola and chocolate also contain caffeine so if you are being strict with yourself take that into consideration as well.

quackojuliet · 27/11/2013 17:23

I drink the clipper decaf! Its lovely but still not quite...there for me. I have a normal pg in the morning then a decaf or two during the day.
A tip I heard was you can basically decaffeinate normal tea yourself - most of the caffeine is released when you first pour the water on. So pour 2 cups (one for dh perhaps) and dunk his first for a minute then do your one. Apparently that reduces the caffeine content significantly while still tasting like proper tea.
But personally if I want proper tea I just drink it...

appletree100 · 27/11/2013 17:39

What about CocaCola?... Damn this craving... all I want to do is drink Coke! But I feel like I cant because of the Caffeine, Sugar and general badness xxx

ilovepowerhoop · 27/11/2013 20:17

you get caffeine free diet coke, dont think I've ever seen caffeine free full sugar coke though

Mim78 · 27/11/2013 21:42

I am happy do drink decaf tea especially in the afternoon, but I need my proper caffeinated tea in the mornings. The taste of decaf tea always seems fine to me. I can drink rooibos too if I get fed up of decaf!

Am trying to limit my ordinary tea to 2 cups a day but sadly it keeps creeping up to 3 or even 4. This is often because I am out and about without decaf tea on offer though!

Mim78 · 27/11/2013 21:43

Ps I don't drink coffee or coca cola so am comforting myself with that!

Bunbaker · 27/11/2013 22:28

Yes to PG Tips decaff.I think it has more taste than other decaff teas.

jammiedonut · 27/11/2013 22:33

I couldn't do decaf so had one proper brew a day and used roibus for the others, either plain, vanilla or earl grey. Was a looooong nine months as I normally drink around 10 cups of tea a day

Bunbaker · 28/11/2013 07:09

"I couldn't do decaf"

Why?

I am very sensitive to caffeine and can't drink anything with caffeine in it after about 5pm because I can't sleep. I find decaff PG Tips hits the spot nicely. I think decaff drinks have come a long way since they were first developed and suspect it is in the mind of those who "can't do" them, not the taste.

I get disappointed when visiting friends because they give me tea that has no taste because PG Tips has more taste than most teas.

TobyLerone · 28/11/2013 08:39

I've never found a decaf tea which is as nice as normal tea. I can't see why my dislike of decaf tea possibly being 'all in my mind' is any less of a valid reason than any other.

jammiedonut · 28/11/2013 08:51

I just couldn't find a decaf tea that tasted the same as my normal cuppa, and I'm very very picky! I tried, very hard (and have four boxes of the damned things still), but had to settle for one cup of my usual loose leaf tea and fruity/mint/roobious instead for the others. It is definitely not in the mind for me, but I am very particular about my tea.
