Gender at 20 week scan - did they get yours right?

Hello, we've just had our 20-week scan and were told by a "senior sonographer" that "it's a girl". I'd quite like one of them as have a ds already (but obviously would be happy for either, tbh even expressing a vague preference makes me feel uncomfortable, all babies being a blessing and all that). I, of course, couldn't content myself with that so pressed her and asked how sure she was and if she got a really good view. She said, well not particularly as it/she was lying down and the umbilical cord was partly blocking the view, but "I'm 90% certain. I'd be surprised if it wasn't a girl". Now I'm kind of wishing I'd never asked as don't want to think pink (not literally, what is it with girls these days and that yukky colour?) in case I'm wrong, but then on the other hand am not exactly in the 50-50 not knowing boat.
I know boys are easier to spot than girls, so have any of you experienced them getting it wrong?
thanks, PP

Correctly told I was having Dd's with the Dd's, had loads of scans though so i'd have been surprised if they were wrong.

With Ds a friend insisted she could see a willy on my 12 week scan pic and she was right.

They told me and got it right both times.
My friend was told she was having a girl and she would be small. Well she had an 8lb 6oz boy, so that got it completly wrong!

i was told with no shadow of a doubt i was having a girl, the sonographer lady had been doing it for 22 years and bet her life on it!!
She was right....

hello i went for a scan at 18 weeks and was told he thinks it was a little boy but was not 100% when me and my husband looked back at the dvd we saw what looked like a boy but saw what looked like a girl under the little willy has this happened before and should i take it as a boy?

pulapula · 14/03/2007 20:17

I am a bit worried by some of these stories!. At my 21 week scan last month, the sonographer zoomed in on what defo looked like a willy. She asked if we could see and said "yes, definitely a boy".

So we have named him Ben and our 2 year old DD says 'baby Ben' when we ask who is in mummy's tummy. I have bought a few blue clothes but think I should leave things there, just in case!

pulapula, did you see the testicles? from what i've been reading online the testicles are a more precise sign. we would think is the actual penis... but i guess because its still so small, the penis shape might be confused with something else. i also read that the famous 3 lines for girls sometimes is mistaken if one of the lines was the umbilical chord.

i hope i havent messed up even more this conversation

pulapula · 15/03/2007 07:30

Jabuti,

No, we didn't see the testicles. The penis shape did look exactly like a penis, but it was the only part we could see on screen- everything else was in shade, so we couldn't contextualise it.

The sonographer sounded 100% sure though...

Hi PollyParanio

We didn't ask the sex of our DS as my mate runs the local antenatal clinic and they had got hers wrong. I figured that that if they couldn't do a decent job on one of their own staff then there wasn't much point in us even asking!

Since then I've heard of loads of people locally for whom they got it wrong so won't be asking when we go for our 20 week scan this afternoon either.

Sorry if they doesn't help with the paranoia.

i just had my 16 weeks sono , and the lady said its 99% a girl . i am so disappointed , not because of her gender , but coz i have already two daughters. me nad hubby were hoping for a boy since we are not having any child after this one. iam very down today, i will defentely love her , but again i really would have been more happy if it was a boy. i really hope they are wrong , but 99% prediction its really scary.
