Gender at 20 week scan - did they get yours right?

Hello, we've just had our 20-week scan and were told by a "senior sonographer" that "it's a girl". I'd quite like one of them as have a ds already (but obviously would be happy for either, tbh even expressing a vague preference makes me feel uncomfortable, all babies being a blessing and all that). I, of course, couldn't content myself with that so pressed her and asked how sure she was and if she got a really good view. She said, well not particularly as it/she was lying down and the umbilical cord was partly blocking the view, but "I'm 90% certain. I'd be surprised if it wasn't a girl". Now I'm kind of wishing I'd never asked as don't want to think pink (not literally, what is it with girls these days and that yukky colour?) in case I'm wrong, but then on the other hand am not exactly in the 50-50 not knowing boat.
I know boys are easier to spot than girls, so have any of you experienced them getting it wrong?
thanks, PP

bubblez I'm having my scan at a 4D Baby i think its called - they were advertised in all my pregnancy magazines, plus they're pretty local to me. (Martlesham, near Ipswich in Suffolk)

When I rang them up - the lady on the phone was really lovely, we had a long chat in the end, she's 72 I think and is the mother of the lady who set up the clinic. I have heard nothing but fab stories from people I know that have gone there... It's costing me £150 odd pounds, but I think it will be worth it.

They have a web site looks www.a4dbaby.com/

dd1 - spot on - said she was a girl.

dd2 - wasn't showing anything no matter how many scans I had.

was told at twenty weeks its defo a girl. Then due to some minor complications needed a more indepth scan at 8 months to rule out heart wall problems (thank god all ok) but baby was lying there with legs wide open for all the world to see the SHE was a HE. Not too bothered but Grandpa had recently finished painting the nursery a lovely shade of pale rose and Grandma had finished knitting whole pram set in pink.

Got told I was having a boy at my 20 week scan, the scanning person kinds went "Oh, do you want to know?" Said yes and was told.

Due to 'stuff' I ended up having another 3 scans before giving birth. Each time they asked if I knew what I was having, I said "yes a boy" and they always said "we think so too" or something along those lines.

I did have a boy, he's 10 1/2 now and there are no two ways about it he is dennis the menace personified. Maybe they could smell the testosterone.............or maybe it's because he still sits with his legs open!!!

Vornsta · 06/07/2006 18:48

told it was definitely a girl at 20 weeks - radiogapher even pointed out "labia". 32 week scan for low lying placenta and I thought I would check if it was a girl. The radiographer laughed as she pointed out the enormous testicles ( hydrocoeles - water on testes , goes away naturally)
I indeed did have a boy!

pucca · 06/07/2006 20:24

Bubblez...I had my 3D scan done at inner vision in warrington, was really reasonable too! cost 115 pound all in all and i got 20 min dvd, 58 pics on a CD rom, 4 pics printed off, and 3 keyrings with pics in.

nicnack2 · 06/07/2006 20:30

our maty umit has now stopped tell mums to be incase they are sued. which i think is

nicnack2 · 06/07/2006 20:30

that they could be sued that is

MumtoBen · 06/07/2006 20:57

I was told at my 20 week scan I was having a boy and the sonographer was correct. She was very certain.

dawnibumps · 07/07/2006 09:32

i had my scan at 17 weeks, not 20, and i am not having anther one till 36 weeks. therefore they wouldnt tell me the gender, but i personally think its a boy. not that im worried either way. everything is neutral colours, and im just worried about health and correct number of appendages.

i just dont understand why i am not getting any scans for so long!

EmMUK74 · 07/07/2006 11:53

we were told 80% sure a girl and we have a beautiful girl

DollyP · 07/07/2006 18:18

Told definitely having a girl, shown the "m" which are girl bits apparently and was asked if I was pleased. I replied by asking if sonographer was certain, to which she replied "absolutely". I was delighted and she was right.

Would have been delighted either way really - just wanted to open the Christmas present early IYSWIM.

bonkerz · 07/07/2006 18:35

YES and NO. With DS at 20 week scan was told it was a girl but 3 weeks later it was a boy!
They told me i was having a girl with DD and they were right!!
My sister was told at 20, 25, 32 and 36 weeks that she was having a girl BUT gave birth to a boy at easter time this year!!! Shocked is not the word and everyone made a mad dash to buy boys clothes. Poor boy spent his first few hours of life in a pink vest!!!

ScoobyDooooo · 07/07/2006 18:37

Yes was right both times, first with ds, was told 90% sure & then was told DD was 80% sure either way i would not have minded & if i have anymore children i will not be finding out!

glassofwine · 07/07/2006 19:36

I have two girls and a boy and they got it right everytime and with DS I was told at only 13weeks! With girls they look for the shape that their 'folds' create - you don't get that with boys now.

motherbeing · 07/07/2006 20:34

The girl we were calling 'Hannah' after being told it was a girl turned out to be a boy named Joel!

burstingbug · 07/07/2006 20:51

With my ds they got it the gender right, but with this pregnancy I was told it "may be a boy, but its 50/50"! only 4 and a half weeks left before I find out what gender 'lumpy' is

jabberwocky · 08/07/2006 20:12

1st time - told it was a girl, then amnio showed boy

2nd time - told couldn't really tell for sure but no boy bits seen - amnio showed...another boy!

bubblepop · 08/07/2006 21:34

found out the sex of 3 of my 4 children, they were right every time.

emmawill · 08/07/2006 22:08

Found out about sex of both my children and they right both times with dd they said they were 99% positive she was going to be a girl but their not so positive with girls and it could be hiding its willy. DS was clear to see he was a boy.

flibertygibbet · 08/07/2006 22:14

Hi, I decided not to find out last time but think I want to know this time around (20 week scan due in Aug). Were any of you who were told the sex scanned at Wansbeck Hospital in Ashington? (Northumberland). It's just occured to me that this might be one of the hospitals that won't tell you anyway.
(Sorry for hijack)

Miaou · 08/07/2006 22:20

it "may be a boy, but its 50/50"

pmsl

I could have told you that burstingbug !!

burstingbug · 08/07/2006 22:45

Miaou,
I know, they were not helpful! At least I still have ds1's clothes and my sil has kept my niece's.
I have started to pack my bag for the hospital, most things are netural colours, but I have packed a few blue things and will ask sil for a few pink things.

aprilmeadow · 09/07/2006 15:58

Yes - DS was lying facing the screen with legs wide open. I couldnt tell what i was looking at but DH said 'so its a boy then'!

Frizbe · 09/07/2006 16:05

Yep twas girls correctly both times!
