Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Joking aside, they are pointless, and I find the idea that you should have more respect for the life of a baby or child than an oap or anyone else quite repugnant.

Issymum · 28/06/2006 12:06

Just a small philosophical question? Why is the life of a baby more important and therefore deserving of more considerate road-use than that of, say, a 35 year old father of three who happens to be driving the car? Can't see it myself.

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 12:07

I agree Booge I don't understand the rationale either..I think they are an american introduction

bubblez · 28/06/2006 12:17

LOL - Booge the way some OAP's drive they should have signs on the back of their car, to warn other drivers.

It's funny but I just don't see what is soooo offensive about someone being concerned enough to want to make it clear to other road users that they have children in their car.

I think that 'repugnant' 'shuddering' and 'puking' are pretty strong emotions about something that is just a form of being cautious.

Tortington · 28/06/2006 12:18

people bragging about having sex.

i want one that says "watch out fertile person on board

misdee · 28/06/2006 12:24

every living being is precious cargo surely?

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 12:30

of course insurance companies value human beings very differently when it comes to paying out

Tortington · 28/06/2006 12:30

"i am on board"

or
"driver on board "
(thank fuck)

shhhh · 28/06/2006 12:32

I agree with iPodthereforiPoor , the XXXX on board signs are for the emergency services. I have also read recently about a baby that was discovered by the es only due to this sign.

Yes I do have a "baby on board" sign, not to brag or to annoy others or to get others to slow down but to make people aware if I am involved in an accident.Sensible imo.

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 12:33

but they don't work re emergency services

bubblez · 28/06/2006 12:35

That is true missdee... But dispite how politicaly inncorect it might sound or be some cargo is considered more precious to others e.g a little baby who can't drag themselves out of a car reck is a little more precious, to some people, than a 35yr old grown man who can fend for himself.

Baby-on-board/child-on-board and mother-to-be signs exsist so why not make the most of them?!?!?

shhhh · 28/06/2006 12:37

like I said I read (last year I think it was) about a case where it did work. I'm also sure if the es came across a car that had a sign or other identifying things they wouldn't ignore the fact that a baby wasn't in it..iykwim.

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 12:37

no one seriously injured can fend for themselves..and some people are incapacitated who may appear able to look after themselves..all equal I think

bubblez · 28/06/2006 12:38

zippi do you work in the emergency services then??? seriously am interested so please do not read with any sarcasm...

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 12:39

how long should they spend looking for non existent child passengers? No longer than they normally look for possible victims thrown clear surely

bubblez · 28/06/2006 12:40

and I personally would rather have it on just in case it does make a difference, then not have it on.

misdee · 28/06/2006 12:40

'heart patient on board'

'LVAD ticking on board'

'beware the middle one bites'

Patttsy · 28/06/2006 12:43

Maybe if Princess Diana wore a seatbeat things might have been different...

Bozza · 28/06/2006 12:43

Well you can usually tell that I have children in my car due to the pushchair, sun blinds, mobile, squashed raisins, car seats, changing bag, random matchbox cars, doll's bottles, etc Although half the time I don't have them with me.

misdee · 28/06/2006 12:45

i have a bumper sticker that says 'I have good brakes, do you have good insurence?' i must put it on my car at some point,.

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 12:48

I'm not in the emergency services but i do drive and see only the driver in cars which have baby on board signs and no one else in them and i think why? plonkers..

I would much rather the es looked for evidence of a passenger having left the car no matter what their age

booge · 28/06/2006 12:48

bubblez I don't think being cautious is repugnant but valuing babies lives over other lives. Perhaps we should have "Nurse on Board" or "Beloved Wife and Mother on Board" etc, etc.

As far as the emergency services go I'm with zippitippitoes, the sign is no indication that the child is actually on board any more than a child seat or blinds or any of the other paraphernalia that goes with carting your little ones around.

Kathy1972 · 28/06/2006 12:48

So those of you that have baby on board signs, do you take them off when you haven't got a baby on board?

shhhh · 28/06/2006 12:52

zippi of course the es would look for anyone who may have been flung from a car but i'm sure you'll agree, it's easier to find a 5ft 10 stone woman than a 6 month (etc) 16lb baby... Like others have said, I wil contiue making others aware with the car sign than wishing I hadn't..

shhhh · 28/06/2006 12:54

just to back up what others are saying about "other baby" stuff in the car. I don't have car blinds (yuk) and other than dd's toys (which could also be flung out of a car in a crash)my car doesn't look like a typical "babya" car. BTW I never use my car without dd and if I do go out alone I always take dh's car as mine is for use with dd.
