Hi all,

Has anyone out here experienced or going through pregnancy with a double uterus?

I found out about mine when i was 18 and am now 30 at week 12 with first pregnancy :) i know all the risks etc and so far so good but i want to know if anyone had unusual discomfort or sensation during pregnancy? I've come up with a few symptoms that have baffled the docs, they are not life threatening but feel unusual so im suspecting its to do with the unusual uteri?

The first is i can already feel the baby in the left uterus(conf thats where it is), it sits on my left hip and its uncomfy to bend left leg at the hip for a long time. thats not so unusual its more the following.

The second is last few days i have a really heavy sensation down below, and the feeling like i was 'loosing a tampon', docs have ruled out prolapse and bladder infection, i get heavy sensation during period which the doc thought was odd and this is just a stronger version of that.

I have 2 cervix's and find them really sensitive, i sometimes get shooting pains in them(this was b4 i was preggers) does anyone else get this?

think am looking for some comfort, have gone through the rigmarol for years of it being an unusual thing anyway so tying to find this kind of advice of what its actually like during pregnancy is really difficult :confused: also am wondering how much is normal, just not normal as experienced by most women with normal anatomy who Ive spoken to :(

Hey everybody!

I've just found out I'm pregnant eeeeep! Very early still (not even 4 weeks) but we are super excited. I found out when I was 21 that I have 2 wombs, 2 cervices and a vaginal septum which was later removed.

So glad I've come across this forum- I have read through every comment on this post and I'm feeling cautiously optimistic. Would love to hear any updates from anyone! :)

Esmeralda1988 · 24/06/2020 19:35

Hi @erinhannah congratulations and welcome to the extra womb club! As you'll see experiences with antenatal care for ladies like us seem to vary from place to place. I'm still cooking at 26 weeks tomorrow. Had steroid injections the other day as a precaution in case I go into labour in the next couple of weeks, they help mature the babies lungs. Best wishes for a successful pregnancy!

erinhannah · 24/06/2020 20:59

@Esmerelda1988 thanks for the message :) It's honestly so good to know there are plenty of us out there. For the longest time I felt like an actual mutant!!

How often are you having scans atm?

Esmeralda1988 · 24/06/2020 21:16

Ha yep I can relate to that. I don't even bother trying to explain to most people, just say I'm having a difficult pregnancy and leave it at that. Although to be fair, it hasn't been as bad as it could have been. Lots of women don't even find out until they get pregnant and my consultant said some women with it go undetected until they're in having a c section so successful pregnancy is definitely possible.
Scans wise, I had a scan at 5,7 and 9 weeks and met the consultant. Then I had my normal 12 week scan then cervical length scans I had about 3 between 16 and 20 weeks maybe. I was told at 24 weeks they'd stop the cervical monitoring because the baby would be viable if born early. Then I have growth scans at 32 and 36 weeks but these might get brought forward a bit. Have you seen anyone yet or contacted maternity services?

RNeeds9 · 25/06/2020 11:19

Welcome to the club @erinhannah !! Glad you found this page. It’s helped me so much reading about others’ experiences and speaking to @londonliv2019 and @Esmerelda1988 ! I’m currently 27 weeks pregnant.

I’m not sure where you’re based, but as Es said our prenatal care seems to be a little different based on our areas.

My hospital didn’t scan me until 12 weeks, as my midwife base didn’t seem too fussed? They did refer me to my OB consultant at my 8 week appointment. I also never had cervical length scans which I was a bit put off by. I was seen by the Gynae assessment unit at one point for cervical pains and pressure, but my exam looked ok. Thankfully no issues since then.

My next scan was at 20 weeks, which again looked healthy so no further action needed. I’ve got my first growth scan next week at 28 weeks. The plan was to have them every two weeks from there on out.

Don’t know if any of that helps. Congratulations, btw! Smile XX

londonliv2019 · 25/06/2020 12:22

Glad to hear your both still doing well @Rneeds9 and @Esmerelda1988 (Hope the progesterone shots are just a precaution and you are OK?)

Hello @erinhannah and congratulations! My care/scans have been like a mix of what the other two have had. Nothing extra early on but I did make sure I got my referral to the consultant sorted. The standard 12 and 20 week scans and I also had consultant appointments at 13 and 21 weeks. I've had two cervical scans/measurements at the preterm clinic at 18 and 23 weeks. They've discharged me from this clinic now as all was ok. I'm not on progesterone like @Esmeralda1988 but my cervix (well both of them!) has been measuring long.

Everything has been going well and seems pretty normal with baby/pregnancy so far. At my last consultant appointment they didn't want to book me in for any extra growth scans unless they had reason too. However at my 25 week midwife appointment my bump was measuring small so the consultant did then refer me straight away for a growth scan - baby was all good and normal size so I must just have a small bump. Maybe I will end up having more growth scans; who knows! I'm nearly 26 weeks and currently not seeing the consultant until 32 weeks now...

My consultancy team have been great and I've felt really reassured. I hope you get the same experience. At my last appointment at the pre-term clinic the top consultant confirmed that there is no reason due to UD I should need to have a c-section which was a surprise. It seems like this opinion varies though; I guess depending on the individual.

Hope that helps! I found it really helpful knowing what kind of care the other ladies were getting- whilst still keeping an open mind that it will be a bit different for us all x

Esmeralda1988 · 25/06/2020 13:21

This was steroid injections (very painful!), just a precaution in case I go into early labour. My consultant is quite keen on precautions!

I was also told the same re natural birth although after hearing my sister in law's horrific first birth story at the weekend I'm thinking again about opting for a section..

I think the key thing is to make them aware that the condition may make you a higher risk for pre-term labour although as you can see from others it hasn't been an issue for them. For me my cervix has stayed consistently short so it may be that that's just an individual issue for me and not related to the UD, but if it was going to be an problem then it really needs picking up ASAP so I would make sure you get some monitoring from 16 weeks or so- I think the official guidance for healthcare professionals backs this up.

Glad to see everyone is doing well anyway!

erinhannah · 25/06/2020 21:00

@Esmerelda1988 wow super early scans! I've kind of decided to leave it a few weeks til the miscarriage rate is a bit lower before I get booked in. So I imagine I'll just have my first scan at the normal time and get referee to consultant then. Yeah I mean in my head I keep comparing it to twins, if two of them can fit in a single uterus and often get to 36 weeks, hopefully so can we!

Hey @londonliv2019 and @RNeeds9 - so nice to meet you :) sounds like you're all getting good albeit slightly differing care.

I had already prepared myself to likely have a section which I'm at peace with, so will just see what they say I suppose.

Keep us updated with any developments!

Hi all- apologies I haven't been receiving any notifications for posts on here which is why I never replied! I have just come back on here to let you all know that I joined a Facebook group called Uterine Didelphys and other mullerian anomalies.

Its a private group so you have to request to join but once I got approved to join I found 1000s of other women all around the world who were just like us and all of us looking for answers or even just other women who understand ! I hope this helps xxxx

erinhannah · 16/08/2020 07:40

Hey ladies!

@Esmerelda1988
@londonliv2019
@RNeeds9

Would love to hear how you are all getting on :)

I'm coming up to my 12 week scan and first consultant appointment next week. Everything has been fine so far but lots of twinges on the left side so I'm pretty sure that's where the baby is!

RNeeds9 · 16/08/2020 11:06

@erinhannah

Hi!! Sorry, I haven’t been on here as much lately. I followed @Prinprin17 tips on the Facebook groups which have been so great!

I’m doing alright. About three weeks ago I was feeling quite rough and they found that my liver function labs had gone high? (Don’t think it’s related to the UD.). So I’ve been in at least twice a week for monitoring and lots of blood tests. I’ve slowed right down now with activity which has helped.

In terms of my UD, I’m 35 weeks this week and baby is still growing nicely. He’s hanging on right at the 50th percentile. He is, however, still breech and my amniotic fluid is going low, so I’ve been consented for my planned c section. They’re going to try and make it to 38-39 weeks, but it depends how my next growth scan is.

Hope you’re doing ok! When do you have your first ultrasound? Exciting times!

How’s @Esmerelda1988 and @londonliv2019 getting on. Hope you’re all alright. Smile xx

londonliv2019 · 16/08/2020 15:43

Hello @RNeeds9 @erinhannah

Glad to hear your both doing ok!

Hope your scan and appointment goes ok @erinhannah and your consultant can answer any questions you have!

Glad to hear your liver function getting better @rneeds9. I’m 33 weeks now and also been in for much more monitoring than expected recently. Blood pressure been borderline high so being monitored and also have low amniotic fluid now too so having scans for that. That’s interesting yours is too-was wondering if it was linked to UD....But baby doing fine and growing well, still head down and will make final call at 36 weeks if I can go ahead with vaginal birth. Had a fairly uneventful pregnancy up until last couple of weeks but all still seems fine and glad I’m getting extra checks etc!

Hope you’re all ok! X

erinhannah · 16/08/2020 17:20

Great news your babies are still doing great on the inside despite a few complications! Fingers crossed for a few more weeks at least :)

My dating scan is in a week, followed by my first consultant appt. we caved and got a private scan at 8 weeks so my hubby could be involved a bit.

Esmeralda1988 · 21/08/2020 04:14

Sorry I missed this but have been checking for updates now and again.
So-my waters went yesterday at 6pm, bang on 34 weeks. No signs of labour yet, in hospital for 48 hours for monitoring. Not entirely sure what this means for delivery if she doesn't come of her own accord, but have been reassured she will very likely be fine if born now. Had steroids, antibiotics all that jazz to protect her.

@erinhannah have you had your private scan yet? Any idea which womb baby is in? Glad you're approaching a milestone and seem chilled about it all Smile

@londonliv2019
@RNeeds9
Glad you're both hanging in there! Looks like I might win the most prem UD baby prize..not sure what that is!
Strange about the low fluid, would be interesting to know if it's UD related, maybe a lack of room? My bump has weirdly deflated and gone very wonky since waters went. Much more comfortable at least! Absolutely bloody tons came out Confused
Glad you're both still cooking. I think I got a bit blasé about the whole thing when my consultant told me she thought I would go to term. I haven't even finished at work yet! Have you two?

Take care all x

londonliv2019 · 21/08/2020 06:15

@Esmerelda1988 oh my goodness that must’ve been such a shock! Glad you are being looked after at the hospital and I’m sure whatever happens you and baby will fine. The prize is a lovely baby!!
I might get the silver medal though...writing this after a rubbish nights sleep in my hospital bed! Was admitted so they could monitor me for pre-eclampsia (so nothing to do with UD!) and said I’ll most probably be here till I deliver-probably early. I’m 34 weeks this weekend so hoping can keep it cooking a little longer. Feeling very well despite it all just glad to be in the right place being looked after. I think I had the same blasé feeling as you...our babies obviously might have different ideas!
Hope everyone is looking after themselves! Xx

Esmeralda1988 · 21/08/2020 07:01

Umm it was and it wasn't, I have to say I haven't been resting as instructed really, and I'd just spent 2 hours painting in the garden, came in for a lie down as back was killing, got up from the sofa and whoosh! Hopefully I haven't actually brought it on myself..
Poor you! Did they confirm pre eclampsia? How long could you be in for? I utterly fucking hate being an inpatient, it is the worst thing. No sleep, boredom, people talking on speaker phone at 5am..
On the plus side, we're both at better gestations than we could be. Have they spoken to you about how to deliver?

RNeeds9 · 21/08/2020 10:07

@erinhannah that’s amazing! So excited for you that you’ve been able to have an early scan. You’ll have to keep us updated how you get on. It’s exciting times! Glad your partner got to go with you, too. Smile

@londonliv2019 oh, wow! Yeah, that’s so interesting that both our fluids are low? I wonder if you’re right and it’s due to lack of space? It’s such a relief that both our babies have grown well despite this! I’m sorry to hear about the pre-ecclampsia. I’m glad you’re getting looked after so well, though.

I’ll admit I’ve been quite anxious for my next growth scan on the 4th of Sept. I can’t help but feeL a bit worried about him in there. I’ve been trying to closely watch my pads for any signs of a slow leak as instructed and his movements, too but the anticipation is killing me haha.

@Esmerelda1988 oh my!! That must have been a shock! I’m glad you’re getting looked after well, too. Have they decided on a delivery plan for you yet?

I feel for both of you ladies in hospital. Hope you both are able to get some rest. I’ll be thinking of you and sending lots of positive vibes Smile Keep is updated if you can/feel up to it xx

Esmeralda1988 · 21/08/2020 11:13

The Dr has been and says if no labour signs I can go home tomorrow and watch and wait, they'd prefer to keep this up til 37 weeks if no spontaneous labour then they would induce me, but my usual consultant who is head of the department had told me she preferred a planned section with a senior Dr for me over an induction that ends in an emergency section, given I have odd anatomy. Basically I don't think she wants just anyone carving me up in the middle of the night without time to prep! Really hoping baby stays in long enough for me to go home and sort some things out, it's all happened so fast and unexpected!

RNeeds9 · 21/08/2020 14:03

Aww @Esmerelda1988 glad that you may get to go home and get some stuff sorted. We’ve opted for the same (planned c section) for that reason too, along with being breech...with aims to make it to 39 weeks. It also depends on my scan next Friday, tho!

Hope you’re feeling ok and all goes smoothly for you and your little one. You’ve got this girl!! Xx

Esmeralda1988 · 22/08/2020 06:06

Thanks @RNeeds9! How're you feeling about the section? Do they think there's any chance baby will turn?
@londonliv2019 how're you getting on? Any better sleeping?

DJBebe · 22/08/2020 06:50

Hi all. Hope all goes well for all of you. One of my best friends has the same shape uterus and 2 cervixes , she is 22 weeks and all is well. 🥰🤞

Esmeralda1988 · 22/08/2020 07:19

Thanks @DJBebe, there's always more of us than I think. She's welcome to join us, hope all continues to go well for her.

RNeeds9 · 22/08/2020 10:17

@Esmerelda1988 I feel ok about it, tbh. My doctor seems pretty certain he won’t flip, but I‘m sure it’s possible? Even if he did, though, I’d still go for a section. I know lots of women with our condition have done it vaginally, which is amazing, but the thought of complications or being rushed into an emergency section (maybe without my Doctor like you previously mentioned) just sends my anxiety through the roof. I know it’s going to be tough, but I feel good about having a plan and hopefully a more gentle, controlled experience for my boy and I. Hopefully I don’t regret it! What about you? How are you feeling about it all? Xx

Esmeralda1988 · 22/08/2020 10:44

Just been discharged! Anxious wait at home then for labour! If nothing happens by 37 weeks I've asked for a section and not to be induced but if labour starts naturally then I'll do that. I'm just not sure about an induction, it seems a lot of them end in sections anyway plus there's the hours in hospital waiting for it to start and so on. I think a natural labour would be quick for me too given my cervix is short and I've lost my waters already! It's quite hard to prepare mentally for either tbh, not knowing which it will be. Glad you've got some control over it, I was erring on a planned section regardless until this happened for similar reasons.

Esmeralda1988 · 22/08/2020 10:47

Re breech I was told very unlikely to turn due to lack of space but I don't know if you might have more room for maneuver with less amniotic fluid? Also been told with our condition they wouldn't attempt to turn the baby.
