So i'm 18 weeks with dc4. I already have 3 boys and I'm getting impatient waiting for my anomaly scan which is in 3 weeks.
Don't get me wrong a boy or girl would be lovely but i just want to know. Dh "usnt bothered" and can wait for 3weeks.

I can have a scan for 39 pounds on saturday morning 5 mins drive away. We wont starve if i buy it but we are not rolling in it by any stretch.

I cant decide!!!! Argggh
Can mumsnet decide please?

Have the scan!! If u are going to find out at the 20 week scan you may as well find out earlier if u can!

Summersun1983 · 08/08/2013 20:00

I am about the same gestation as you and desperate to find out sex of our baby, we already have a lovely little girl. We do have one place near by that do the scans but its £100 so can't justify the cost, if however it was only £40 then I probably would :-)

Saying that if they can't tell me at 20 weeks then I will have to go private lol
Good luck whatever you decide xx

BrianTheMole · 08/08/2013 20:02

Yeah, if you can afford it then why not.

littlestgirlguide · 08/08/2013 20:14

Why not, I would at that price!

EmB1715 · 08/08/2013 20:22

We did it for £80! Go for it!

Lovemyprincess4eva · 08/08/2013 20:32

I had mine for £50 at 17 weeks cos I couldn't wait any longer! So yes go for it x

SaucyJack · 08/08/2013 20:36

No, don't as you're not rolling in it.

You'll find out soon enough and £40 could be much better spent on baby stuff.

TarkaTheOtter · 08/08/2013 20:43

I'd wait. It's only 3 weeks. Spend the money on the baby after the anomaly scan.

stickortwist · 08/08/2013 20:52

Ooo bit divided. I canvassed opinions feom the boys at bedtime. Ds1 says i should wait 3 weeks. Ds2 wants me to book it (and says just me and him should go:)) ds3 not bothered but wants to go to the cinema and see planes!!?!.

I know summer its frustrating isnt it!.

Anyway i looked at the website and says i can only take 3 ppl in with me which wouldnt work for us. Ive emailed them to see if we can all go!

I did ti with my first 3 and ithink it cost 90 pound,i didnt with number 4 as my first scan wasnt until about 16 weeks so they told us there, this time i wanted to wait to 21 weeks as i felt i found out a bit early last time and even though i wanted to know i ddi want to stretch it out as much as i can,i dont think i could of waited any longer though!

stickortwist · 08/08/2013 20:55

Oops pressed too soon.

So if we can all go i'll book it. If not I'll need to somehow distract myself

I had a gender scan at 16 weeks with dd3, it was lovely and we got some nice pictures Smile
I would do it.

worley · 08/08/2013 21:15

I would wait.will be more accurate at anomaly scan as baby bigger and easier to see. Very very easy to sex it wrong at that stage. If they can't see them at 20 weeks go after..

Madratlady · 08/08/2013 21:21

I'd wait and save the money. Then pay privately if they can't tell you at the 20 weeks scan for any reason.

Madratlady · 08/08/2013 21:22

In fact, that's pretty much what I'm planning on doing anyway

BunInMyOven93 · 08/08/2013 22:15

I had one at 16 weeks! :) 23 now and stil a girl lol. Was lovely. So personal and nice x

Shellywelly1973 · 08/08/2013 22:21

Im 15&2 wks. Im very tempted to book one for next week. I would if i were you especially at that price!

charlottesweb87 · 09/08/2013 13:09

I am 17 weeks and 2 days and desperate to find out so I can see why you might be feeling impatient. My scan is in 3 weeks but I like having something to look forward to. It's really up to you but it's not that far away and if for whatever reason they can't see what the gender is at your 20 week scan you could have one after and pay for it. Enjoy finding out when you do! I am so looking forward to it, also looking forward to not being asked "do you know what you are having?"

UniqueAndAmazing · 09/08/2013 13:14

just wait.

it's only 2 weeks.

and don't forget that they're not guaranteed to be accurate anyway, so why spend money you don't have to spend?

oh, and private scans are taking resources away from theNHS.

MrsApplepants · 09/08/2013 13:27

Go for it!

Out of interest, unique, how do private scans take resources away from the nhs?

stickortwist · 09/08/2013 13:32

IVe had an email back today and i'm not allowed more than 2 accompanying people (and ive got 3 boys under 9 in the school holidays). So we wont be going after all.
Bit disappointed but we're all going to the cinema for a treat instead

OP posts:
stickortwist · 09/08/2013 14:01

Oh and dont agree it takes resources away from nhs.

Its not outsourcing a clinically indicated scan so not undermining nhs in any way

OP posts:
UniqueAndAmazing · 09/08/2013 15:32

MrsApplepnts - any medical procedures that are done privately take resources away from the NHS - the sonographer, the nurses, the doctors, everybody involved could have been working for the NHS.

it's undermining the NHS by doing an unnecessary scan and making someone who needs a scan wait.

stickortwist · 09/08/2013 17:47

Disagree strongly unique. The sonographer will be doing it "in their own time" to earn an extra income. If they werent doing it they would be at home not working for the nhs. The facilities are not on nhs premises.

I do think certain aspects of private medicine are bad for the nhs- for example creaming off straightforward ops lkke hips and undermining acute hospitals. Extra scans that are not provided on nhs in separate facilities are very different.

OP posts:
worley · 09/08/2013 18:10

I'm a sonographer.. Working full time for the nhs and at weekends for a private company which is in no way affiliated with the nhs. My private work does not take me away from any nhs scan or work
