Has anyone had a scan at 9 weeks?

I just got an appointment card through the door from my local maternity hospital asking me to come in for a scan in two weeks. This will be 10 weeks after my last period but as I have a 35 day cycle I think I'll only be 9 weeks pregnant. What will I be able to see? They also didn't give me any information on what I should do/ bring etc. does any one have any advice?

i had a scan at 8+5 and they could see a bean shaped baby with heartbeat but i very much doubt they would be able to do the 12 week checks on the baby. have you had your booking appointment yet? if you have, call up your midwife to see what she says. sorry not much help

gatsby79 · 11/07/2013 21:24

No booking appointment, no phone call, so far I've only seen my gp to tell him I'm pregnant!

I had one at 9+4, though that was a private scan for peace of mind :)

We could see the head and body, teeny legs sticking out the other end, and one little arm when baby gave us a wave. In terms of what to do, bring etc - just make sure your bladder is full (the clinic I went to said drink 500ml of fluid in the half hour before the scan)

The scan was fab BUT I wouldn't want that to be the only one I had in the first trimester - I mean, I'd want one at 12 weeks as well just because then you're out of the 'danger zone' as it were, plus, yes, it would be hard to do the 12 week checks at 9 weeks.

Perhaps call them and let them know your concerns? Otherwise if they can't do everything they need to at this scan they'll presumably have to give you another.

I have. I had a car accident. DD was the size of my fingernail shaped like a kidney bean.

She is now 12 and taller than me!
I have to sit her down if she needs telling off Grin

gatsby79 · 11/07/2013 21:45

I definitely want to have the scan but I'm concerned it will count as my 12 week scan. If I ask them to do another one in a few weeks is it likely they will? This is my first time pregnant - as if you couldn't tell!

Well, I think they'd be obliged to if they couldn't carry out the 12 week checks, but it's hard to say - medical care is such a postcode lottery in this country.

If they refused, would a private scan at 12 weeks be an option? (c.£100)

Update: www.mumsnet.com/pregnancy/12-week-scan

NICE guidelines say the scan should take place after 10 weeks but may happen sooner. It's possible then that you wouldn't get another one on the NHS.

gatsby79 · 11/07/2013 21:55

In terms of cost, yes. I live in a fairly rural area however and the nearest private clinic is around 70 miles away so it's not terribly convenient. I could definitely look into it though. Thanks.

I had my first scan at 7 weeks because my gp was just lovely and thy were lucky enough to have an ultrasound machine.

Ds was just a tiny wee almost caterpillar like shape. Glad i saw it though Smile

gatsby79 · 11/07/2013 21:59

Will I hear a heartbeat?

I had one at 9 weeks (as was unsure of dates) and had to go back a few weeks later for an official dating scan. I think dating can be inaccurate that early (although it actually wasn't), and it's also too early for the nuchal test if you want to have it.

At 9 weeks you could just see a little kidney bean shape with a little flicker which was the heartbeat.

katrinaxx · 11/07/2013 22:05

I had seven week, nine week and 12 week scan they probly just want to date the pregnany properly they have to give you a twelve week scan because thats when they do the downs testing xx

JanieLovesLuckySocks · 11/07/2013 22:07

hey gatsby,
congrats on your pregnancy :) i too had long cycles and had my first scan at 8 weeks. they could see the mini bean and a flicker of a heartbeat and asked me to come back at 14 weeks for my next scan (12 week scan is performed between 10-14wks). i was a bit of a panicker and couldn't wait that long so we paid for a private scan at 12 weeks (about £100 but the best money i've ever spent). be sure to have a full bladder, you probably won't hear a heartbeat but should see the little flickering heartbeat :) they don't normally use the doppler to hear the heartbeat until after 16 weeks.
best of luck xxx

littleblackno · 11/07/2013 22:08

I had a scan at 9 weeks as i had some bleeding. It was an internal scan which they hadn't warned me about before so i was a bit Shock It did count as my 12 week scan because they were able to date it then- i can't remember exactly. I think it may depend on your authority as they all seem to be different.

Anothermrssmith · 11/07/2013 23:06

I had a scan at 9 weeks, can see its a baby but a bit of an odd shapped baby (the heads bigger than the rest of the body at that stage), saw the heart beat but too early to hear it. Wether or not they'll count that as your 12 week scan I have no idea, I have another one next week, when I'll be 13 weeks, they'll do the downs screening then but because I'm diabetic I need to get scanned every month anyway to make sure everything's going ok

Sparkeleigh · 12/07/2013 00:16

I had a scan at 9 weeks 4 days, we could see the baby's head and body and the cord. I had thought I was 10 weeks, but they moved my due date back after measuring. We heard the heartbeat too, it was amazing. I didn't get another scan until 21 weeks but they don't do downs testing in my hospital until the 20 wk scan.

Sparkeleigh · 12/07/2013 00:17

Oh, we saw the heart beating too...

x0gawjus0x · 12/07/2013 07:16

For some reason I am also booked in for a scan at 8+5? First pregnancy, not sure why really although I am glad so I can see a heartbeat however its still not out of the "danger zone" so I actually would rather not see it before that time is up lol but ohwell. The midwife is actually at my GP surgery not the hospital.. whether ill get a 12 week scan or not idk I would of thought so but if I don't then I will have to buy one im not waiting!! :D x

Kitkatinatin · 12/07/2013 07:24

I had one at 9 weeks too because of v. Long cycles. Saw a wriggling bean with stubby limbs and heartbeat and was told to come back at 12 weeks for all the checks tests and measurements. 33 weeks now and still very attached to that first scan pic - very special!
Congrats!

Branleuse · 12/07/2013 07:26

it looked a bit like a broad bean iirc

ShadowStorm · 12/07/2013 07:34

I had a scan at 9 weeks with DS after a bit of bleeding.

They could see a heartbeat, and could date the pregnancy then, so they said that unless we wanted to do the Down's testing, the early scan would count as the dating scan, and in that case, no more scan till 20 weeks (9 weeks was too early for them to do the Downs testing).

Also, you should turn up with a full bladder. If your bladder isn't full enough for them to do the ultrasound externally with the probe on your tummy, they'll probably want to do an internal ultrasound.

RobotBananas · 12/07/2013 07:47

Did you get a letter with the appointment? Just call the hospital, explain that you'll only be 9-10 weeks, and should it be moved forwards a couple of weeks. If you leave it until your scan to ask them about it you might not be able to get an additional appointment.

HystericalParoxysm · 12/07/2013 07:54

If it will be 10 weeks after your last period you are likely to be 8 weeks pregnant or less, surely? In which case they would probably invite you back at 12-ish weeks especially if you request the nuchal test.

RobotBananas · 12/07/2013 08:03

Pg is dated from LMP Hysterical.

chilipeppers · 12/07/2013 08:04

I had 2 early scans with my dd following my 3rd mc. One at 7 weeks, she was just a little dot with a heart beat! Then another at 9 weeks, she looked like a little hamster!
