Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

MOG As others say, it can only be your decision. Only you know what you can take; don't think I'm a freak, but if you don't disapprove of such things I am a Tarot reader and I will do one for you, obviously free, if it helps. Often do them for myself when faced with a moral quandry. Just pm me if you want one. If you don't and decide to go for it, nobody will sit in moral judgement on here.
Jen I am so glad at unexpected good day - I expected you to spend it in the loo - that is really good! What did OH mean by going to bed like that, he's not allowed to be ill! Those 'You're just lucky you haven't put on weight' remarks are so infuriating, though not quite as bad as 'Have you thought of trying...'
Sally Congratulations on belly. I have heard that BIOOIL is very good for stretch marks.
Totes Countless women have used it without damage sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/research/medications and they wouldn't prescribe it at all if it was hazardous.
Don't be worried about taking it. It's awkward about parents. Even if you have to make use of a nursery or something, from everything I have picked up from these threads, he won't be traumatised and will gain a sibling, which is more than worth it.
Feekerry Excellent advice! I hope things aren't too bad for you.
Slinky I am so glad you are so much better and thanks for your lovely encouragement as always.
Abibub Sorry, I didn't answer your query! Most women find it peaks sometime between say seven and eleven weeks, but there are the unhappy few who find it is worst in the last tri, I think RNJ was one such, and it must be awful, and some, again an unlucky minority, like wavesandsmiles who seem to suffer equally horribly and violently throughout.
Apologies to Anyone rudely ignored.

Hi lucindaE thanks for reply! Don't apologise I think these threads get busy anyhow! I'm 9+4 and mainly on dry bland stuff which I think is helping?! Cant have milk at all, even struggled with a plain homemade white sauce the other day. Ive come off the buccastem they were horrid and not really making much of a difference I think. They tasted foul! ! So kinda counterproductive I guess?!

AbiBub · 28/08/2013 14:52

Ooooh meant to say that olive oil is amazing for stretch marks if you rub on belly at least one a week its supposed to be quite good!! My mum did that when she was pg with my brother and I and has no stretch marks! ! Hope that helps :0)

MurderOfGoths · 28/08/2013 17:18

I love my doctor, so damn much! Went in to her today in floods of tears, told her I couldn't go on, but she was prepared and told me that essentially I was having an allergic reaction to the pregnancy and so the thing most likely to help me was steroids. I had to take 6 pills at once, but I don't feel nauseous anymore. It's gone completely. I feel human again. I can actually carry on with the pregnancy. I am so damn happy.

Tallyra · 28/08/2013 17:37

oh mog that is brilliant! I took steroids before, and it's amazing how many you need to take. I'm so glad you have finally got some proper help. xxx

jenpatnim · 28/08/2013 17:45

Yay for good doctors, MOG!

I am so so so tired - 2 days in work and I am exhausted. The nausea is still there but no vomiting today (yet) so long as I take it easy this evening.

Tallyra · 28/08/2013 18:09

I've already told work I won't be in for a while. they saw me go through this last time and are very understanding thank goodness. I've been spending my days on the sofa. the dog has mostly been snuggling but just now he panted in my face and brought on my only bout of fetching so far today. I feel terrible whenever I try and do things so I end up just sitting here watching tv.

AbiBub · 28/08/2013 18:32

MOG thats the most wonderful news I've heard all day!! Biggest grin here from me, really happy for you! !

ChocChaffinch · 28/08/2013 18:38

yay MOG superb news. Thanks Brew get eating some nommy food

Totesamazeballs · 28/08/2013 18:57

Fantastic MOG! Thank God for a good doctor. There must be something in this allergic reaction business.

Tally - I seem to spend the entire day sleeping. I sleep from 10 until 10 ( i get up briefly at six with DS) and then from 2 until 5. I think DS won't remember who I am before long.

Jen - I am in awe of you managing to work!

feekerry · 28/08/2013 19:00

MOG I am so happy for you. I should have thought of asking if they had mentioned steroids at the hospital, as it has helped one or two on here.
Jen and Champagne Sorry you are struggling at work - I didn't realise teachers went back a week before kids - it's very brave of you to struggle in, and Tallyra I am glad work are nice (for once, so many people have no understanding there) and sorry you are suffering and having to be a tv addict. As I deteriorated I read 'War and Peace' (often breaking off to doze) and even thinking of the plot makes me feel sick even now!

Hope Everyrone is coping today.

Fee- wish I booked the gender scan as I'm sick of waiting. Mine is not for 2 weeks yet as the hospital booked my scans before we got the dating scan so it's a week late :-( I'm still taking my concoction of pills too as I'm still quite sick and frightened to stop them. Every day I try, then get to mid day and pop them as I feel it getting worse.
I can eat some pasta and noodles now. Just managed to eat a jacket potatoe but don't know if that'll stay put yet. I havnt eaten any meat either, especially chicken! The smell alone makes me puke. I can even smell it from upstairs if somebody is eating it cold in the kitchen. Super senses or what! Unfortunately chicken is my husbands main source of protein as hes a complete health freak. Wish he would eat canned tuna or something non meaty. Even eggs would be better. Today I was told off for eating a bubble gum flavoured lolly pop. He reckons our kid will grow up to be sickly as I'm eating crap. If only he understood I was lucky to eat at all.
When I first started feeling the movement it was just after I coughed or sneezed. It was like baby was startled. I think Im only feeling it now my stomach is so huge though and I'm 18+ weeks. Today I had my arm resting across my belly and I felt my belly just pop out to the left. This is the first I've felt it from outside. Think it was a one off for a while though as its not happened again since. I'm sure you'll feel it any day now. It was about 16+ weeks I could start making it out from just twinges and gas.

Gona try using the bio oil. I actually already have some but just didn't think of using it, so thanks ladies xxx

AbiBub · 28/08/2013 20:52

Tallyra thats fabby that work are so understanding so at least the pressure is taken off you for that. :0) I really hope you're feeling better soon. Its horrid when it prevents you from doing things isnt it so you have my sympathy.

LittleMachine · 28/08/2013 21:41

Oh forgot to say, got a call from Pregnancy Sickness Support, they've found me a local supporter. They seem like a wonderful charity. If you are really struggling do get in touch with them.

Meerka · 29/08/2013 14:21

Hiya

I've posted a few times on mumsnet on the thread on being preg when you're older and the 5:2 diet thread and ... now it's time to face my second greatest fear, that I'll have HG again.

I'm a whisker off 44 and so I'm aware that the chance of miscarriage / other problems is very high indeed, but as my husband says, well the chances of having a healthy baby have gone up a lot from 6 weeks ago ( we think I'm 5 weeks along).

But I have had mixed feelings all along, even though we wanted another baby badly, because of the HG last time. it's what, a 50/50 chance that it will recur? I'm kind of ... terrified ... to tell the truth. And with a 5 1/2 year old in the house I can't be bedbound for 5 months again, but last time I simply couldn't get up either. Couldn't move, couldn't get to the loo, couldn't even talk some days. It's taken me all five years since my son was born to recover to the way I was. Five whole years.

Has anyone any tips on preparing for HG, if it shoudl hit? I have abandoned the diet ofc and am madly trying to swim as much as I can and go to the gym for gentle exercise to get as fit as I can, plus eating as much as I can (double-goodbye diet!) of veggies, fruit and some meat to store up reserves against possible starvation later.

Any ideas gratefully received!!!!

jenpatnim · 29/08/2013 16:32

Meerka, welcome, and hope you don't have to stay with us!

I have had a bad day, all I have managed to eat is 4 cream crackers and about 500ml of water, with several incidents of retching and vomiting. At work, on the way to work, on the way home....

I am seriously considering seeing if the dr will sign me off sick but I feel so guilty about it - the tablets are keeping it under some control and I feel bad missing the start of the year with the kids - I want to set my routines in place, you know?

I just don't know what to do. I have ordered more ketostix from the chemist which I should get over the weekend, and that will help me keep track. It is stupid, I feel like I am a failure or giving in by taking time off and what if it continues the whole way through? I can't just stay off until the baby's born and then roll on maternity leave!

Help...... advise me

MurderOfGoths · 29/08/2013 17:43

Meerka In my experience this time the trick seems to be getting on the anti emetics sooner rather than later. Advantage to having it a second time is that it seems to be treated as hyperemesis sooner, rather than all the waiting to see if it is just morning sickness. And do push for the stronger stuff. I know I found cyclizine, stemetil, buccastem and metacloperamide to be next to useless whereas now I'm on a mix od Ondansetron and steroids.

I'd also go to your doctor about getting counselling, going through it a second time brings back a lot of the fear.

Really hope it's easier for you this time.

MurderOfGoths · 29/08/2013 17:46

What tablets are you taking jen? Have you tried any different combinations?

Tallyra · 29/08/2013 18:42

oh today has been a horrible day. I'm still able to drink, but I'm having a hard time with retching. I've spent a lot of time in bed sleeping after retching and dh has taken our goddaughter to the woods to teach her to light fires so I'm on my own trying to keep hydrated.

jenpatnim · 29/08/2013 19:02

MOG I am on metaclopramide and ondansetron, cyclizine is a no for me. Have not tried stemetil as it doesn't go well with metaclopramide, apparently.

I do think the tablets are helping a lot - I would be 100x worse without them.
