Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Thanks Lucinda. I think I am going to ask the doc for Maxalon on Tuesday. Cyclazine seems to be ineffective for me.

I keep repeating the mantra 'things will get better, things will get better'!

ChocChaffinch · 24/08/2013 19:54

Hi All

I tried cyclizine, did nowt for me. Then maxalon, then avomine, slowly and insidiously worsened on avomine, so have switched back to maxalon. Have had a relatively good day on it, able to drink and eat bits here and there.

Loving - pink lucozade - like a pink graprefruit lemonade-y thing
and Fanta icy lemon MMMMMMMM
nibbling choc and orange cookies now, thankyou Maxalon Thankyou

jenpatnim · 24/08/2013 20:05

Totes, the advice from my hospital re tablets 3x per day was to space them every 8 hours, set alarms on phone and wake up in the night to take them if that is how the time works out. They seemed to think it was important to keep them very much on time.

Glad to hear from Tallyra - was thinking about you!

Hope everyone is ok, I am pretty tired today. Managed to eat dinner last night at my mums, but instead of coming up it rather painfully went straight through - I think my stomach was punishing me.

Today I have managed a few bits but been sick as well...... eh.

feekerry · 24/08/2013 20:21

hello all? all doing okay?
sally how are you? you sound in alot of pain. poor you. x
all okay here. feel pretty okay most of the time. went out to lunch today and had a cheese sandwich! so big success there. still on alot of drugs so time to start a bit of experimenting on reducing doses gradually as do feel okay most of the time. last pg i started to reduce the dose about 20 weeks and i am 15 weeks now so about the right time to try.

on another note i have been and still am slightly worried about this pregnancy. with my prev preg i felt her move all the time from 15 weeks and it was non stop. haven't felt anything yet (nearly 16 weeks) which i no is not unusual at all. its just it all feels so dead inside.... just dont feel very pregnant. i don't know.... its hard to describe. just have a feeling all is not well. which is silly as scans all fine to date etc.
who knows... maybe i am going mad but i just can't shift this feeling that something isn't right ....

Tallyra · 24/08/2013 21:01

if you are worried fee, I would call your mw. is there a scan possible that you can ask for?

on my side of things, I am feeling surprisingly good. we went to our local cafe for tea tonight and I had a proper meal, scampi and chips. that is really good right?, not a bad sign? I've never felt this good this soon after coming out of hospital before.

jenpatnim · 24/08/2013 21:26

Fee if you are worried try to get a scan - or even buy a foetal doppler - you can get them on Amazon from £20, then you can check the baby's heartbeat whenever you like

bunnygoesbang · 24/08/2013 21:50

Hello I have been directed here by a member of my antenatal group.

I'm going to have a huge moan.
I am just under 8weeks and since Before my period was due I have been feeling and being sick. Some days I'm not that sick but always feel it. It started with being bad through the night now its all day.
I feel so unwell. In exhausted all I want to do is sleep. Everything smells wrong including water.
I have headaches everyday and my skin has gone so dry that under both eyes has spilt. I'm totally miserable and struggle to leave the house for fear of not being near a loo. I have been taking cylazine for the last two days and haven't been sick as much but I still being sick and the room is still spinning.
What else can I take?
Sorry for the moan it's just all becoming too much

LittleMachine · 24/08/2013 22:27

Hi bunny, sorry you're feeling so awful. There are other options of medication. You might have to argue your case with your doctor a bit. I am on cyclizine, it took about 2 weeks to work properly for me this time, but it is working reasonably well now.

Go back to your doctor if it isn't working and if you work, don't be afraid to get signed off. I hope you feel better soon, there's no feeling like it and it's awful.

LittleMachine · 24/08/2013 22:34

Just catching up with the rest, MurderofGoths, sorry you've been so ill and in hospital. Thanks

Fee, I have a Doppler and I going it a sanity saver in my last pregnancy, as I had an anterior placenta and often wouldn't feel movement for a while. I bought a new one this pregnancy and once again it's constantly putting my mind at rest. However, if you're really worried, I would get a scan or speak to your midwife. I'm sure everything is fine.

As for me, I'm doing reasonably well. I feel like a bit of an HG fraud, as I am nowhere near as bad as last time - no admissions, I have some nausea free moments, I have a safe food. Still struggling massively with fluids though. Overall though I'm coping on the cyclizine now and feeling quite positive...maybe it won't last 42 weeks this time!

Tallyra · 24/08/2013 22:49

bunny I agree. if cyclizine isn't helping, go back and ask for a different drug. most people find ondansetron is brilliant but it's expensive. in on metoclopramide with ondansetron when necessary and avomine at night.

bunnygoesbang · 24/08/2013 23:06

Can it just be that I need to give I remote time?
I am off work due to bleeding and cnf really take more time off plus I have a dd so its not like I get to rest at home

Totesamazeballs · 24/08/2013 23:17

Hi all,
Good to hear some positive stories and people having better days.

welcome bunny - sorry you have to join us! i pretty much feel exactly like you and have a DS. i have been in bed for a week and not stepped outside the house because DH has been around to look after DS.

I was thinking of not taking the cyclazine tomorrow as it hasn't made a jot of difference but then I am wondering if I ought to give it more time?

Thanks for the pill timing advice Jen. I took them six hours apart today...oops!

Been a bad day for me but damnit, I have to go out tomorrow as I have a freelance commitment to keep and I don't want to lose the gig!

LittleMachine · 24/08/2013 23:18

It could be, or it could just be not working. In my last pregnancy, cyclizine kept me alive...and that was it! I could keep a tiny bit of fluids down, when I was taking them, but I was still desperately, desperately ill and should have been on something else. This time I thought it would be the same, but after 2 weeks of taking them, I started to feel a bit better.

In each pregnancy I've also taken ondansatron for a week. Last time they worked brilliantly, this time, they didn't help anymore than the cyclizine did, even though I kicked up a horrendous fuss to get them.

It's a tough one. You might improve on the cyclizine or you might not. Are you keeping anything down? Were you ill in your last pregnancy?

Totesamazeballs · 24/08/2013 23:25

I was sick in my last pregnancy but didn't take anything. My doc was too frightened to prescribe and me to take! i was off work until week 16 vomiting 5+ times a day.

At the moment I can keep something down but was able to before the cyclazine. All food and water is gross so I am just forcing myself.

Fee- I hope you can speak to the MW. They are more tuned into mothers instinct these days. Its probably nothing but you need peace of mind.

bunnygoesbang · 25/08/2013 00:14

I am keeping some food and liquids down but it's a constant fight. Had an ice lolly and some fruity lucozade and that's stayed down. I have a fairly strong stomach so I'm fighting hard.
No ketones on urine when doctor and midwife checked but like I say some stuff is staying down.

It was nothing like this last time I was a little tired and nauseas but I only remember being sick a couple of times.

I have certain things in place such as soon as I wake I have cereal and come and lie back down that tends to stay down but by half ten I'm starving and borking while trying to snack. I eat little and often lots or rice cakes and have the bands but they don't do much.

I will try to have my pills at a regular time and see if that helps.

Thanks for the advice I will give the pills until Tuesday when the docs re back open and if no change I'm going back

feekerry · 25/08/2013 08:26

thank you ladies. just being silly i am sure. think i find it odd as i look so preggers but just don't feel it. then i am sick.... so all is prob fine. and i take it now i am 16 weeks nearly if something was wrong i would discover pretty quick.
i have the midwife appt next week where they listen for hb
think i am too wrapped up in dd1 to notice i am pregnant... apart from the hg of course lol

Totesamazeballs · 25/08/2013 09:25

Hi all,
Bad night for me.

I don't think I am going to bother with the cyclazine today. I know I haven't given it a huge chance but I have felt no difference and I feel like I would have noticed by now. It has also made me feel more tired and down.

Bunny - I am impressed you can manage breakfast etc. I just don't want to eat anything. I think I am hungry and thirsty deep down but it's hard to tell!

I was wondering last night why they don't know more about what causes HG and morning sickness? Have there been trials measuring hormones in ladies with HG v those without?

Might give ice lollies a go!

Moving in with DS to my parents today. I always thought I would like three kids but assuming this pregnancy goes well, I don't think I can ever go through this again.

Fee - sorry to trot out the old mantra but you are right about being sick meaning all is well! Oh the irony!

How is everyone else today?

Misty9 · 25/08/2013 10:05

Morning all.
Eventful time here as spent night before last in hospital after severe abdominal pains woke me up at 1am. Ectopic was queried but then they found my hcg levels are through the roof so molar pregnancy was their worry.

Had scan and pip is in the right place with a hb :) but high levels explain why I'm so sick and things will only get worse as they keep rising :( I think I heard them say something like 130,000?
Feeling awful today and first time I've had to just go back to bed. Feel so bad for dh as he's got brunt of care for ds, who is lively to say the least!

Cyclizine doesn't appear to be working anymore. Really worried about going on holiday on Tuesday as will be hot and I'm good for nothing at the moment :( is it a bad idea to go? All inclusive so won't have to order food or anything - just choose from buffets.

So are you glad you went on holiday champagne ? And did the heat affect you adversely? I'm only 7wks and the thought that this might get worse at 10wks is very depressing and frightening :(

feekerry · 25/08/2013 12:20

oh the evil of garlic champagne.... i love garlic normally but i REALLY can't stand it now. food of the devil...

Sally8655 · 25/08/2013 12:39

Hi all

Thanks for thoughts and suggestions from you all xx

Fee- I second a Doppler for peace of mind. I'm sure all is well though.

Totes- sorry meds didn't do much, defo ask for a change and try something new. I can also recommend I've lollies, twisters are a fave of mine right now, lemon sorbet is also good.

I'm still not too great, pain is still bugging me, especially in my lower back. Don't think it sciatica as the pain is more severe aches rather than sharp pains.
Feeling awfully sick and trying to have a change up with what I've been eating. Grapefruit is good and noodles seem to stay put. I am having odd cravings now but not healthy ones! Ice cream with crushed up maltesers and twirl. Yum!!

AbiBub · 25/08/2013 13:12

Hey all

Am 9+1 today and have been prescribed buccastem 3mg and am hestitant to take them but feel like I may hurl again. Scared to eat much tbh. Im not as bad as some of you, but the nausea and the hurling really stopping me doing anything. Does anyone have any experience of this medication? Fed up of feeling like this :0 ( x

Sally8655 · 25/08/2013 13:17

Alibub- I had them but, unfortunately they didn't do much for me at all. Just had the disgusting taste while they melt. You never know till you try though xx
