Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Huge congratulations to you Reebok, also delighted that your symptoms disappeared immediately, same as mine did - and I think Room popped in a little while ago to say she had her baby, weighing over 9lb if I recall correctly?

There certainly is light at the end of the tunnel, but it is a very long tunnel for some. I am keeping my fingers crossed that things ease earlier for those still suffering. Now it is just the utter exhaustion of no sleep to contend with, but I am sure that as my body returns to normal, and my diet improves, that too will be easier to deal with.

Beccadugs · 05/08/2013 14:32

So nice to hear from people whose it through.

Have been back to hospital, no ketones, so no IV. I do feel a bit like I am being punished for trying my absolute hardest to stay hydrated, every little sip is a battle that requires me to lie very still with a roaring stomach afterwards.
Still at least I got some ondastrone (sp!!) as none of the other seem to have helped.

Thinking about cancelling our holiday next week, as 14 hours in the car doesn't seem like such a good idea anymore.

wavesandsmiles · 05/08/2013 16:12

Oh becca I absolutely feel for you in terms of feeling punished for trying hard. I had the same thing in the latter weeks of my pregnancy when I was desperately trying to keep fluids down via lollies etc , but keep going. High ketones become a vicious cycle, the higher they go, the iller and sicker you feel.

14 hours in a car does sound pretty hideous. I could barely manage 20 mins even on relatively good days....

I'm being a human milk machine today. I think Caspian knows he is being weighed tomorrow and is piling on the ounces Smile

Beccadugs · 05/08/2013 20:09

Glad he's a little trouper waves! And nice to know in not just me having these crazy thoughts!!

wavesandsmiles · 06/08/2013 11:06

How is everyone getting on today?

Hope scan went well Champagne

I hope that the slightly cooler temperatures are making things a bit easier for everyone. (Keep resting, keep going with icecubes or ice lollies and do as little as possible)

Beccadugs · 06/08/2013 11:08

I am feeling normalish today!!! Does ondastrone (sp) really work this well? I haven't been sick and have been able to eat and drink...

wavesandsmiles · 06/08/2013 11:18

It's ondansetron Smile It works amazingly well for some people....It made me better than I had been, although orally didn't work until the very last few weeks, but I was super unlucky. Hooray for a day of eating and drinking - do make the most of it.

jenpatnim · 06/08/2013 11:19

Becca it does! But for me it only worked that well for a while then the symptoms started creeping back in. I got about 2 weeks before I started being sick again.

Champagne, glad the scan went well!

I ate plain pasta for dinner last night. Bad idea, all came back up a few hours later. OH very worried about me, but nothing I can do. Still on the ondansetron and the metaclopramide but wondering what the point is. Also still on antibiotics and trying to remember to take the thiamine as well. I'm used to being medicated (antihistamines, antidepressants) but I have never had so many different things to take that I genuinely lost track before.

Down another 1.5lb... sigh. I do feel skinny though - my legs especially.

LucindaE · 06/08/2013 11:20

Everyone I am off the land of no pc's for a few days, but the wonderful wavesandsmilesand Reebok will be on hand.I hope everyone isn't feeling too terrible today and I hope that RNJ has still got baby inside when I return as he needs to be there (but it's torment for her).Hugs to all. Happy scan news.

Enjoy your break Lucinda Smile

RNJ3007 · 06/08/2013 13:49

Enjoy the break Lucinda. Have a good one.

Had a scan today. He's definitely still a boy. Looking good! He's still smaller than average, but not scarily so! Yay! He's catching up. Rescan in 2 weeks, just to double check. Physio in a couple of hours.

Today has been a less grim day; only a short bout of vomiting this morning, and have since had a banana and some raspberries, as well as some juice and water. Considering trying a sandwich!!!

wavesandsmiles · 06/08/2013 16:35

So pleased you had a good scan RNJ and that your little boy is catching up Smile Good luck for physio. And yay for less vomiting and more eating. How many weeks are you now?

My little out in the big wide world boy had his 10 day weigh in today, and he's gone over his birth weight by an ounce, so now weighs in at 7lb 4. Midwife who discharged us was surprised I'm looking so small already - I had to point out that I ended up putting on under a stone, despite my healthy size baby and oceanic proportions of amniotic fluids (surprised I didn't flood the entire ward when they broke them).

RNJ3007 · 06/08/2013 19:46

waves Just so relieved that if I make term he should be a reasonable size! I'm 36+4 today. Just need to make it to Friday. Cervix was visibly dilated on scan and despite being booked in for a scan on 23rd, the sonographer said she doubted she'd see me! Physio was torture. Am still feeling quite strange! But I managed to eat a couple of mouthful of chilli this evening. The rest of the epic batch is going in the freezer for post-birth ready meals!

Awesome news on your little lad! Well done.

I'd have to put on 18lbs a week to even reach Pre preg weight at term, so I'll definitely have funny looks from the midwife!

Hope everyone is doing ok today.

wavesandsmiles · 06/08/2013 20:02

Keeping my fingers crossed for you holding out til Friday RNJ (and hopefully a little longer so he can do even more growing)

Well done on the chilli - I made a batch whilst pregnant and froze the lot, and funnily enough just have some heating up now Smile

18lb a week Shock! I was little to start with, so am really pleased I didn't lose more (although my weight is dropping off still daily despite being able to eat again Confused)

Jen - hope you have had a slightly better evening? Honestly do perservere with the meds, although if you are being sick the oral ones might not be in your system long enough to be effective? That was the case for me hence the (excuse the TMI) suppositories, and then injections, and then IV doses.

sally and fee how are you doing?

feekerry · 06/08/2013 20:14

have fun lucinda
becca yep ondansatron can be a wonder drug for hg. both times round it has literally saved my life. this time i am taking a large dose. 16mg a day but it does allow me to live a normal ish life.
okay here waves i know how amazing it is to give birth and be hg free. did yours lift as soon as you gave birth? mine did last time. that tea and toast they give you in the ward was amazing!!

wavesandsmiles · 06/08/2013 20:25

Yep fee mine lifted straight away. I had a 5 hour discharge as I was determined to get home after spending SO much time at hospital during the pregnancy. But they brought me tea and toast, and a sandwich to the delivery room (where I was until I went home) and it was pretty amazing Smile

RNJ3007 · 06/08/2013 22:00

fee Mine did too with DD. After she was resussed and I had skin to skin with her, I devoured 4 slices of jammy whole meal toast and two cartons of juice. The crum-filled hair of DD in my arms is one of my fave pics - epic success on every front.

I have primed my parents with a 'when I have delivered, can I get DH to call you with any odd food requests please?' message!

The memory of that feeling is keeping me going. And the knowledge that I only have 9 weeks of clexane jabs left at the most!

Sally8655 · 06/08/2013 23:32

Hi waves and others

I'm doing ok, surviving I suppose. I've managed to eat some today and keep it down. Just seem to be bringing up phlem at the moment so food is staying put long enough to digest.
Feeling nauseous pretty much 24/7 still but clear of infections for now! I've had my fair share for a while. I'm going to keep up with the cranberry juice as that seems to have really helped with the water works.

Getting alot of back pain and stretching pains now, even a few stretch marks starting to appear. And yes bump is already huge at 15 weeks. I swear it looks like im 30 weeks gone.
Had a few headaches too but nothing a couple paracetamol didn't sort out.
My blocked pregnancy nose is easing a little which makes breathing more comfortable.

I do think things are improving a little and hoping i'll magically be normal at the 16 week mark. I know it's quite probable that I'll end up setting a new target when I get there but I can hope for now.

Hugs to everybody feeling poorly and really pleased some are a bit better xxx

Reebok · 07/08/2013 03:44

Hello everyone, as Lucinda said I will be on the check on you all while she was away. Unfortunately I'm not a HG expert like she is but I have survived it.

RNJ congrats on the scan and the slightly better appetite. My HG started to lift around 36 weeks and although the nausea stuck until the end, I was off meds by 37 weeks so there is hope. Just keep doing what you're doing!

Sally I'm so pleased that you're starting to also feel slightly better. Fingers crossed for a 16 week recovery. It has been known to happen!

Fee my HG also lifted literally last Thursday. It was a fantastic feeling to no longer feel sick anymore. I'm hoping lots of you will have that feeling soon enough.

Hope everyone else is feeling slightly better tonight? Right off to sleep before LO wakes up again and I'll be back to check on you tomorrow when I get a chance.

jenpatnim · 07/08/2013 05:14

Hey all. Waves - I am mindful of keeping the meds down and generally speaking I try to hold them in for at least an hour. If I am sick, I re-take them.

It is 5.13 am, I can't sleep, I am hungry and I feel sick all at the same time. Totally fed up. And I'm only 12 weeks.

Reebok · 07/08/2013 08:41

Jen what meds are you on? I found that when I took my meds, I would have to lay down for a while (at least a good half hour) to get them to settle before attempting even an ice lolly. Are you managing to keep down anything? Coke always helped for some reason but it had to be really cold.

jenpatnim · 07/08/2013 10:57

I'm on Ondansetron and Metaclopramide. I didn't eat much yesterday but I kept down what I had. Just eaten a toasted pancake and a biscuit so that will keep me going for a while.

I did eventually get some sleep so I am feeling a bit better that way.

Reebok · 07/08/2013 16:05

That's great that you are managing to keep something down no matter how small it is. Fingers crossed you will start to see an improvement soon.
