I read this story www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22751415 the other day and thought, it would be so wonderful to be able to buy one of these boxes! I'm usually a bit of a google queen but I couldn't find anything out there. Does anyone know if you can buy them and if so, where? So gorgeous!

Ahh, DBro has a friend who's partner is Finnish and they are expecting their first baby this Spring. Their baby will receive this baby box as the baby will be brought up Finnish, not Scottish.

mummop25 · 05/02/2015 23:01

I wonder if its just a novelty thing or mums here would really be comfortable with their baby in a box. Culturally I do wonder if we would accept it here?

Its one thing to jump on the bandwagon when everyone is talking about it, but would we really put our babies in a box if it was available to all?

just a curious mama

Glossyflower · 05/02/2015 23:47

Adding to would parents really be comfortable putting their baby to sleep in a box...When my DD was a week old we had to stay in a hostel room to be near my dad in intensive care. Nowhere to put DD other than to bed her down in a drawer (taken out and laid flat on the floor I might add!). There was a single bed but being a new parent I was concerned about squishing her.

honeysucklejasmine · 05/02/2015 23:53

These are so cute! What a lovely, sensible idea. I'd love one!

Re boxes... My brother and I slept in a large drawer from a chest for a long time. And go be honest, a pretty "storage box" from TKMAXX or the like would work perfectly well. Smile

Alby16 · 06/02/2015 10:31

I think this is a beautiful idea and Finnish mums described the happiest in the world because they are well looked after for bringing babies into the world.

From now on every baby gift I give is going to be a Finland inspired baby box Smile so useful x

Just found this one - is in the US so $30 shipping (approx £20) and start at $70 (£40) for just the box and bedding but the one that looks anywhere near as complete as the Finnish one would be $200! (£130!) and still looks like it falls short:

I just found this: www.finnishbabybox.co/products/finnish-baby-box

It doesn't look like you get as much as they do in the actual maternity boxes the Finnish state give to parents, but bloody close.

I'll have to try and work out if it's cost effective to buy one. I really want it to be, because it's lovely (I have no qualms about putting my baby to bed in a box) and I think the stuff in it is super cute.

Anyway, thought I'd share this. They ship to the UK too.

sarah00001 · 22/05/2015 00:33

What a wonderful thing for a country to do, I wish the UK did thaht. I'd be happy for my baby to sleep in a box during the first few weeks - simple, safe, takes up little space and much cheaper than a cot.

bunny85 · 22/05/2015 04:46

What an amazing thing! How lovely. And what we get is a teabag from bounty Confused

Scandinavia doesn't do blue/pink crap :) it's lovely! There's none of the daft 'all girls must be sparkly and all boys must be blue' rubbish. Kids clothes are just brightly coloured and super cute. And super expensive.... ;)

The baby box is lovely. I'll have a winter baby (I live in sweden) and I'd love a box like this.

queentroutoftrouts · 22/05/2015 08:09

Why all the deleted comments on this thread, what's all that about? Confused

ARV1981 · 22/05/2015 08:10

Yes, one of the things I like about it is no blue/pink. I have chosen not to find out the sex of my baby, and am sick of the lack of choice for those of us that choose not to know (or whose babies refuse to flash their bits on the scan Grin)

Newborns only see greyscale anyway, apparently so its not for them that we do this, it's for us. And I think if they only see in greyscale then brighter, more defined colours must be more stimulating than washed out pastels of the same hue.

I'm working on my DH to buy the Finnish box. I think it's an awesome idea and I hope the three dads that set this co up do really well. I only wish our government could be so generous (but I think I'll see a flock of flying pigs first!)

ARV1981 · 22/05/2015 08:12

Queen - I think it's because of people trying to do market research on it. I imagine these three Finnish dads are not the only people who thought setting up a co like this would be cool! Not really sure though...

HannaElina · 26/05/2015 13:01

Hey :) If someone want to have a finnish babybox, my due date is in november SO I will take a babybox and I am willing to sell it to someone who wants to have it! I still haven't got it and it might take couple months to get it. It would probably be the new baby box from this year. You can also ask me if you can't find the pictures of these boxes :) Price will be 250€ + postages. Send me email --> [email protected]

Letis76 · 30/06/2015 12:45

It is now possible to buy a similar Finnish baby box from all over the World. Here is the link: www.nordicbirthbasket.com

blowinahoolie · 30/06/2015 21:19

Haha, this thread has resurfaced I see...

DB's friend has met a Finnish girl and they've settled in Finland with their new baby and he was telling me all about the box the Government there give each new couple who are expecting their very first child together. Sounds incredible.

Apparently their council houses are special too...they include a steam room and sauna in the apartments!

Cheshirehello79 · 30/06/2015 21:39

Just seen the box - I definetly want one too so if there's a link guys please share it

Cheshirehello79 · 30/06/2015 21:45

I just came across this link ...www.finnishbabybox.co

IReallyAmHephzibah · 30/06/2015 21:45

I have no idea how to do links but I do know that the moomin shop does these boxes. I suppose that you need to like moomins though!!!!!!

Cheshirehello79 · 30/06/2015 21:49

As Arv mentioned you don't get much and at a price of £399 that's a lot . Was quite funny to read what's in the box which includes 6 condoms haha

MrsAnxiety1 · 30/06/2015 22:00

Just think how much money the Finnish government could be making off these baby boxes if they would sell them to other countries... I'm pretty sure it'd keep their economy going for the foreseeable future!Grin

Cheshirehello79 · 30/06/2015 22:05

Good thinking Mrs - hope someone in Finland is reading this :-)

Sagoola · 04/11/2015 08:26

If anyone here is interested, I would be willing to sell and ship 2015 Finnish maternity box. Just received it last week and it's unopened. It looks like this this year www.kela.fi/web/en/maternitypackage
