Does anybody else find that they get dead legs whilst walking?

Today was awful, it was hot and when I was walking home from work this afternoon I was in so much pain. I don't drive so I walk everywhere it's a 15 minute walk to work/home but at the moment as I'm a bit slower it's taking me nearer to 25 minutes.
Anyway, I'm walking along not rushing or anything and I get these horrendous pains at the top of my legs like shooting pains and then my legs seem to start going numb while I'm walking. It's the most horrible feeling especially when I'm on my own.

I got home had a rest then had to go get dd from school another 15 minute walk. Was ok on the way there but walking home it was happening again. Also bump seemed to be really hard and very uncomfortable. I'm hoping it's just the baby moving position and pressing on nerves or something but boy is it sore.

Anybody else get this?

Bozza · 26/04/2004 21:53

Well Georgina your last post is spot on. Because the consultant today measured me at 39cm but the midwife on Friday at 41 cm! This is partly because the baby is now 4/5 engaged. Thought that was positive because DS didn't engage until labour.

Consultant says baby bigger than average but nothing out of the ordinary. So home birth back on. Thanks for all your support everyone. Now just need to regain some of my confidence (half the battle I think) and tell my Mum!

Good luck Prufrock!

GeorginaA · 26/04/2004 21:54

FANTASTIC news Bozza! I'm so glad you posted - was thinking about you today, especially when I had my scan! So pleased the home birth is back on the menu

GeorginaA · 26/04/2004 21:57

Linnet: I don't have exactly what you describe, but I do get pain when I walk (no numbness though) - but I ascribe that to the SPD. When's your next midwife appt? Might be worth mentioning to her.

I hope someone else can be a bit more helpful

Linnet · 26/04/2004 22:08

I don't see the midwife again until I go into hospital to have the baby.

I'm seeing my GP on Wednesday for a check up and then after that I don't think I see anyone until my 41 week overdue appointment with the consultant. I will mention it to GP though.

It has happened before(the dead leg feeling), usually happens when I'm walking up the stairs to the staff room for my tea break. Is probably nothing just thought I'd ask if anyone else had this happen.

I'm just fed up and it was hot and I'm running out of clothes to wear, lol Also just general grumpiness settling in I think. Not helped by dd's little friend saying to me this morning, is your baby coming in 2 weeks time, I told her probably 4 weeks seeing as dd was late. The thought of there being an extra 2 weeks to wait is really beginning to get to me not sure I can handle that, especially if it's going to be warm. Still I shouldn't complain I finish work on Saturday and it will only be a few more weeks at most.

Bozza glad to hear that your home birth is still on the cards.

Georgina be sure to let us know when you get your date organised.

Prufrock, best of luck for tomorrow I'll be thinking of you.

spots · 26/04/2004 22:11

Great Bozza! We need a home birth on this thread I reckon. Hoorah!

Linnet that does sound unpleasant and I can only second G's comments... yes sorenes but haven't had numbness. I could imagine that as you suggest the head could be pressing on a nerve, but reckon Expert Opinion always good idea in these circs.

GeorginaA · 27/04/2004 09:30

Got the date (hurray!)

Big day is Monday 10th May, be in for 8am (although I have to phone half hour before to check they haven't had to delay due to a sudden influx of babies overnight!)

snowbird · 27/04/2004 09:47

Snap, Georgina. I'm booked in to be induced on the 10th. Could be all change though as at my doppler scan yesterday the baby is breech so could end up with a c-section. I'm 35weeks now so I'm hoping the baby moves this week, spent most of yesterday on hands and knees with bum in the air. DS (20mths) thinks its great fun!

Egypt · 27/04/2004 09:47

glad you got your date georgina
linnet - are you teaching? (when you said staffroom) don't know how you keep going! I had a bit of pain and slight numbness in my buttock! for a while and someone told me it was cramp. sounds more like the baby is pressing on a nerve as spots said. check it out. can you ring your m/w?
bozza great news about your home birth.

What time is prufrock going in? early i seem to remember. hope she's ok!!

Egypt · 27/04/2004 09:51

snowbird - hi
blimey, its all going on here.
whats happened to twiglett? she's booked in for 4th may.

Egypt · 27/04/2004 09:54

meant to say snowbird, that my baby was breech until during the 35th week. i too spent my life on hands and knees for 4 days! well, not continuously! had had new tiles laid in bathroom and sealed them and cleaned them time and time again and i think that did the trick. also m/w told me to get one of those gym balls (asda) and think that must have helped too. they are just nice to sit on anyway

good luck.

snowbird · 27/04/2004 10:09

Thanks egypt.
I feel like this pregnancy everything has gone pear shaped so I'm not building my hopes up about the baby turning. That way I can prepare myself in case I need a c-section. It took me a while to get my head round the fact I need to be induced (due to OC).
TBH I just wish the baby was here now, I'm getting totally fed up now of being big, heavy, tired, uncomfortable etc.
Sorry about the doom and gloom this is why I've not posted since I found out I was pregnant.
Repeat after me...Not long now, not long now,

there you are twiglett! pack your bag girl hope you are feeling well....you sound v positive.
not long now, not long now

GeorginaA · 27/04/2004 11:28

My hospital bags are still in disarray too ... I figure I'll pack the night before I have to go in

bounce bounce it's so NICE knowing a date - feels like I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel of a very shitty pregnancy. Although I'm not sure I'll know what to do with myself once the baby's been born and I don't have to turn up at the hospital every other day!!!!

I had glucose in my urine test yesterday - does anyone know what that is supposed to mean? Midwife just asked if I'd been on a chocolate binge, and I said yes but is that bad?

I'm still in the frame of mind that I'd like a c-section rather than an induction, I know it's nuts and I should be grateful I don't have a need to have a c-section... I think this was compounded by the fact that while I was there this morning, a woman came in with contractions! I'm such a wimp... and to think at the start of this pregnancy I was gunning for a homebirth with only gas & air...

Glad everyone else sounds so positive and cheerful! I hope we all keep in "touch" in a May babies thread after this (and I hope prufrock considers hers a May baby even though it's April, lol)... I'm so nosey and I want to find out what everyone's babies are like and how they're getting on

Egypt · 27/04/2004 11:46

i must say, having a definite date would be lovely. dh would know when to start his paternity leave, parents could arrange to come up, instead they will have to drop everything and come at short notice (they live 3 hours away) and of course my mum insists she is coming immediately!
you'll be glad you got through without a cs if you don't have one in the end georgina.
wonder how prufrock is............

GeorginaA · 27/04/2004 12:04

I know I will... I just like the idea of avoiding the whole labour bit

Mothers... don't get me started. Very tempted to lie and tell her the induction's due the week after... she's threatening to turn up at the hospital again - argh!

spots · 27/04/2004 18:52

What do mums DO while their daughters are in labour? I wondered about not telling mine till it was over... worried about the amount of simultaneous twittering and wine drinking she's bound to do... it must be a very weird feeling. This is a first grandchild so she'll be getting the bottles in in advance. Does anyone phone their mum DURING labour just to let her know progress (hidden agenda check she's not hanging from the ceiling by her fingernails)...?

GeorginaA · 27/04/2004 18:58

I made the mistake last time of phoning my mum just before we went into the hospital. She'd said she wasn't going to visit until a week after I'd got home, but she turned up at the hospital while I was still in labour... then expected to be looked after by dh at home until I returned. For the first week of my child's life I think I fed him and that was it... any time he was awake and not feeding he was passed around all the visitors - drove me nuts.

This time I have ordered my mother not to visit until a week after so ds can settle a bit with the new life before hoards of visitors turn up causing more disruption for him. She's already gone into hurt "but I'll be the last to see the new baby" mode. I just know she'll try to come up to the hospital if I tell her when it is, even though I only intend to be in the required 6 hours if I can get away with it...

Judd · 27/04/2004 19:15

Hello,
I am also very envious of people who have a definite date to aim for! My EDD is 12th May, but then I noticed that on the date reckoner thingie in my book, there is no 29th Feb. Does that mean that I've "done" an extra day and can dream of 11th May???
GeorginaA - glucose in your urine is probably down to a chocolate binge, but its much too late for them to do anything. I had gestational diabetes in my 1st pregnancy (which is what too much glucose in urine means) and they hoik you in around 28 weeks to drink a very very very sugary drink and see how your system copes with converting it into glucose over the next couple of hours. I think that your relevant organ (pancreas?) can slow down during pregnancy and so the conversion isn't as rapid, leaving loads of sugar for the baby to absorb....with potential for big biffer baby if left undetected!
Having had gestational diabetes before, I was determined not to get it again if at all possible, and so, with a tremendous amount of willpower, have avoided most sugary items like the plague. Therefore I have the most massive bump being supported by a tottery little 5ft 1in frame which looks absolutely ridiculous!
The thing that drove me MAD after dd was born, was family members saying "you look fantastic! What's your secret?" (because I had lost a scary amount of weight due to lack of sugar). When I said "diabetes" they actually replied "I could do with a good dose of that then".
I know I haven't posted frequently on this thread, but I have been reading it avidly right from the start, and would like to wish everybody the best of luck with their births.

lol twiglett, I know I've said this before but I swear we have the same mother I've already upset her by having ds looked after by dh's sister, but like yours, I know my mum would be climbing the walls after an hour. She gets bored and ignores him then wonder why he misbehaves!

I have to say, though, that whether it's the pregnancy hormones or just me getting older, I'm refusing to feel guilty about putting my foot down this time around. Hopefully, she'll get the hint and tone down the emotional blackmail stuff...
