Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Oh Bozza You must be gutted. Can you ask for a scan to check the size? They're not always accurate with their size estimates. (Mind you, I'm not sure if the scans are any more accurate). Mind you, if your ds was 9lb10 then I suppose it's fairly likely you're going to get another biggun

Still no spots here, 4 days to go until all clear. (And my son's birthday party is next Sunday so I'm going to be gutted if I get it now and miss it ). Saying that, I'm assuming I'm counting right - 21 days from the first sign of ds spots? Or should I be counting the all clear from the last day ds would have been contagious (day 5?).

Bozza · 24/04/2004 13:00

I think I will feel better on Monday when things are a bit more definite. The midwife says that it feels big and although it is not as big as DS now she expects it will be bigger if I go to term. So then there is the possibility of them suggesting an early induction. She has told me to make sure I see the consultant or registrar because a junior doctor will have no more idea than she has.

The baby has been head down since very early on so I didn't have to do your contortions Egypt. And although it is not engaged I don't see how it could turn with the lack of space. Although maybe its not that tight because the midwife also says I am carrying a lot of water. Basically I'm just huge. She actually said she could feel its facial features on Sunday and asked DH if he wanted to. He declined!

Meant to post last night on the issue of what to wear. DH insists I was wearing nothing when I gave birth although I know I started off in a hospital gown. Could well have taken it off though because one memory is of being VERY hot and shouting at the midwife when she wanted to turn the fan off.

DH is coming with me to the hospital on Monday and I have arranged a play date for DS so pleased about that.

Bozza · 24/04/2004 13:02

Georgina - sounds promising about the pox. Really hope you can make DS's party. I suppose you're a bit scared to be too optimistic. Thats how I'd be anyway. But good luck!

spots · 24/04/2004 16:41

What a bummer Bozza. Do you have strong feelings against your hospital or just a pref. for home birth? how was your experience with your ds?

Mine is opposite, measuring surprisingly small. I am tall (just off 6ft) but the baby's growth seems to be tailing off a bit... midwife didn't seem too worried, but I am surprised to be 36.5cms at 38 wks.

Just went to nearly new sale and bought staggeringly cute drawstring-bottomed nighties for easy midnight bottom access. AND stuff for hospital bag (not nearly new) after the stream of top tips.

Dad is helping us put up a pulley. Rephrase: dad is putting up pulley for us.

All good.

ps the easy access nighties are for baby not me!!

prufrock · 24/04/2004 22:18

I did wonder for a sec spots

Bozza - did you see the other thread on indusction that Georgina started - it needn't be an horrific medicalised experience, especially for a second baby.
I'm also big - measured 40cm on Wed at 36+5, but my midwife said it is quite common to be bigger on subsequent pregnancies because of the way the baby lies. If they do a growth scan they can tell a little better - ds2b was estimated to be 7lb at 35+5.

I have now packed my bag. Just got to put in clean knickers once they are dry, toothbrush, and the lovely brie I am going to buy on Monday to gorge on post birth.

Linnet · 24/04/2004 22:34

With my first baby I always measured 1-2cms behind what I was in weeks. With this one when I was measured at 35 weeks I was measuring 33cms. Exactly the same measurment at the same time as the last pregnancy.

Also although baby was head down at that time it wasn't engaged. I see the gp again this Wednesday so I'll see if it's engaged then.
But second babies sometimes don't engage until you go into labour.

Was chatting to one of the mums at school yesterday and she was saying how neat I was with only having 3 weeks until due date. I certainly don't feel neat, I feel huge, I can't bend down to pick anything up and seem to have developed a habit of dropping everything which means of course I then have to get someone else to pick up for me. Oh please let this baby come early, please pretty please.

GeorginaA · 24/04/2004 22:37

I am so excited for you prufrock... I feel more excited about your impending arrival than my own, I swear, with you being the "first" of the May thread peeps

I'm actually quite looking forward to the induction now, I have to say, which is odd because I never thought I would feel like that. Mainly because this pregnancy has been so stupendously sucky I'll be glad to have it all over and a new set of things to worry about!!!!

Still no sign of chickenpox spots, but have got a lovely case of athletes foot... I blame the fact I haven't been able to SEE my feet for about the last month to dry them properly after baths... sigh.

Can I come in with you on Monday, prufrock? Think they'll do a 2 for 1 deal on caesarians?

spots · 24/04/2004 23:06

I have been anti-nested! We removed all plates from plate cupboard in order to wall-mount it (Dad to wall mount it I mean). Dad, bless 'im, with terrible hangover did not badly on the pulley front but a real Some Mothers Do 'Ave Em on the cupboard. Cupboard toppled forward from its anchor points on wall smashing door and bruising poor dad. Plates everywhere. Messy, dammit. Yes I do feel sorry for dad but cannot help but disapprove of DIY with hangovers....(esp. in current teetotal ish state).

Prufrock and brie lol! Don't get it all over their lovely carpets will you?

Bozza · 25/04/2004 16:33

LOL at "anti-nesting" Spots - my house seems like that most of the time. Last pg at this point it was permanently immaculate.

My reasons for a home birth were partly because I thought I would prefer to have no journey to or home from hospital (its about 40 minutes).
And also did not like being in hospital post-natally (although stayed 48 hours). Also would like more relaxed atmosphere at home.

But OTOH 40 minute journey wouldn't be great if I had to transfer. Another thing is that our hospital doesn't have a m/w led unit or anything so its either home or full-on delivery suite.

Been rather silly and firstly charted my bump size in my maternity notes (and 41 cm at 36+4 weeks is off the scale) and then googled on "large for dates" and other things.

GeorginaA · 25/04/2004 17:06

Bozza, it's the after birth stay in the hospital that is a big percentage of my worry too. I've been told that if the birth is uncomplicated, even with my various conditions I can be allowed out as early as 6 hours after the birth and in general second babies you don't stay in as long anyway. I found that quite reassuring.

Even if that doesn't pan out (hell, what HAS panned out for me in this pregnancy?!!!) then I think I'm at least more mentally prepared this time - I know what to expect and I think it'll be less stressful as a result.

GeorginaA · 25/04/2004 17:12

What I also meant to say though in all that, was that even so, I very much hope you still get to have your home birth. Will be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you I've found a page on the HomeBirth.org.uk site which may be relevant for you during discussions with your midwife:

homebirth.org.uk

for some reason it won't let me give a direct link to the right page, so you need to click on the following links:

"'You can't have a home birth, because...'"

scroll down to the heading "You may be expecting a big baby" and click on the "'Big Babies and Home Birth'" link.

Hope it helps.

GeorginaA · 25/04/2004 17:17

Ah ... managed to find the direct link url:

Large Babies and Home Birth

GeorginaA · 25/04/2004 18:41

Um... I just stood up and the baby feels so low that it's about to fall out! Does that mean it's engaged?! I didn't think it engaged until the last minute in a second pregnancy? (I'm 36 weeks)

Daren't walk around now, as I have a subconscious desire to cup my hand around my pelvis to hold the baby in

Egypt · 25/04/2004 18:49

i felt just like that last night georgina. went for a meal with dh and parents and standing at bar,had to have hands cupped around bottom of bump! hope it means engagement. getting a bit fed up of not being able to move! having strong braxton hicks often and mild cramps now and again, including last night in the pub when felt like the little blighter was headbutting and fisting my pelvic bones, but other than that, nothing is happening. 3 weeks to go yet anyway. is your induction still booked for 10th?

GeorginaA · 25/04/2004 19:03

I'll be booked in officially for the induction tomorrow I think (after my 36 week ultrasound scan). I've had some strong Braxton Hicks too, and getting a bit concerned that the baby might want to make an appearance before the induction date! Know what you mean about the headbutting... ugh!

GeorginaA · 25/04/2004 19:04

Um, I mean that the appointment should be made tomorrow, not that the induction will be tomorrow!!

spots · 25/04/2004 19:51

We've been up in Linnet country today visiting dh's mum in Carnoustie. What a beautiful day. Had an ice lolly in garden - that good!

If this is the same headbutting that I'm getting then yes, eurgh. Let's tell these damn' babies that it's just Not On.

Egypt · 25/04/2004 20:14

ooo glad i'm not the only one, it really feels like bones bashing against bones doesnt it?! having lots and lots of bhs whilst watching corrie just a mo ago. then poor srah platt started bleeding - oh dear. i bet this baby makes an early appearance, can't handle this for another 3 weeks.
had a lovely day in sun too spots. read and pottered about......niiiiiice

Linnet · 25/04/2004 21:43

Did everyone have a lovely warm sunny day today?
My uncle got sunburnt apparently, although he's in the south of England not sure if it was hot enough where I am to get sunburnt but it was really nice just the same.

We had a lovely warm day and dd played out the front of the house with her bubbles while I tidied, cleaned, mopped, Ironed, hung out all the washing...wonder if this could be classed as Nesting? I don't remember doing nesting last time. Was wishing the whole time that I could still fit into my shorts though so I could sunbathe. Oh well, only a few more weeks hopefully until back in normal clothes(she says very hopefully)
Sadly we didn't have any ice lollys to eat in the garden, but bought some when we went shopping tonight so next time it's nice we can eat them outside

Are you all set Prufrock? It's all getting exciting now a matter of weeks to go or days in Prufrocks case.
Hope all goes well for you tomorrow Georgina and you get your date arranged.

I also get the feeling that the baby is trying to engage, seems really low down then seems to move back up again. When it's really low down though it feels as if it could just pop out any minute, lol

Egypt · 26/04/2004 11:51

ahhh, another lovely day.

just wanted to see how you are feeling prufrock and to say GOOD LUCK, i am thinking of you and cannot wait to hear your news. Lots of love

GeorginaA · 26/04/2004 16:47

I have another day to wait until I get the date arranged harrumph! I tried to bribe the midwife to get it all done and over today, but she wasn't having any of it (can you tell I'm fed up of being pregnant yet?!)

On the plus side, the scan all went well, definitely still a little boy in there, dopplers good, growth is showing a week ahead of dates (I'm 36 weeks, baby's size is supposedly 37 weeks - 6lb something she said, but I've forgotten what the something was!).

Feeling like the baby's about to fall out doesn't mean engaged though, at least not for me, still only 4/5 engaged.

Egypt · 26/04/2004 16:54

i'm still confused on this engaged thing then georgina, though 4/5 meant just one more fifth to go?

or 4/5 to go?

sorry to hear about the induction diasppointment but another day is not long to wait. You'll get there in the end. i know what you mean about getting fed up. me too

redfiasco · 26/04/2004 17:00

Hello All,
My scan on Friday showed that I am not going to give birth to a giant, as midwife thought!! But an "average" sized 7lb baby. Also were able to tell me that its a boy!! Couldnt tell on earlier scan. Have 2 dds, so will be a nice change!
Sounds awful, but thought I might be disappointed if I had a boy, but seeing him on the scan, so clearly, was beautiful, and just felt a warm glow.

spots · 26/04/2004 19:17

All these babies are seeming so real! Mine helped me dig up dandelions today. The garden looks a bit less cheery without them and I am knackered.

Bozza any news from your consultant??

GeorginaA · 26/04/2004 19:36

It's noticeable actually how much variation there is between midwives taking the fundal height measurements and those taken by the ultrasound scans (at least on my chart). Would lay money on most people being scared to death that they are big/small for dates are actually fine.

I asked my midwife about this, Egypt! 4/5 engaged means that they can feel 4/5 of the head remaining outside that pelvic area, so it means 4/5 still to go.
