Ok so just got back from my 12 weeks scan. It's TWINS!!!! Wow. Shocked much. But how exciting Crazy times ahead.

My mum has 5 year old twins. Non identical boy and girl!! She didn't find out until 20 weeks, she cried and laughed, there the best thing that happened to the family. She carried them until 38weeks, had C-section because one was breech. Big-time Alex weighed 8+pounds (he was greedy) Girl- Alyssa weighed 6pound. Best of luck, so many adventures ahead for you :-D. It's amazing how simular and different they are. Alyssa is very behind and going through testing. Alex is ahead of everyone in his year, very clever! I really want twins! Congratulations x

They are by far my easiest babies there soso happy :)

People used to say how lucky I was, at the time I was scared and now there here I know im lucky

How do you know they are non identical??

I can't wait. The sonographer said they are non identical as they have their own placentas and are in their own sacks.

Sonographer needs to learn some facts then :-)

Each in their own sacs and placentas means they could be identical or non identical :-) only way to determine will obviously be if its a girl and boy or by zygosity testing.

Dh is part of a non identical set of twins.... I think it is wonderful!

Thank you everyone. I spent a lot of the night thinking 'oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck' (sorry for the language but that's what I was thinking) this morning I had to ask DP if it was really Thursday and I hadn't dreamt yesterday. He just laughed and said you didn't dream it we're having twins dear. How crazy! I am so full of excitement today, still shock, but hey all will be ok How amazing!

harrygracejessica Oh really, I did a fair bit of reading last night and from what I read two placentas means no identical. I am now confused haha.

Like harry has said, you cannot tell until you have had zygosity testing once they are born. If the fertilised egg split very early on then they would have separate sacs and placentas but still be identical. It astounds me how many medical professional get this wrong and tell patients the wrong info. 25% of DCDA twins are identical. I had to wait until my DCDA girls were born to find out if they were identical or not (both had their own sacs and placentas), it is obvious they are not identical, they look very different.

I know of 2 sets parents with twins who were told they were non identical and after 3 years found out they had identical twins.

I remember the shock at my 12 week scan well. I still look at my twins nearly a year later and think, wow, I have two babies!

That is bad they give out wrong info, not that it matters one hoot if they are or not She also said that as they have their own placentas they are the safest type of twins to have (i'm assuming she means not twin to twin transfusion that I have heard and read about) is this also incorrect?

Having their own placentas (DCDA) twins are supossed to be the safest type of twin pregnancy, she did get that bit right!

Can I ask if people co slept their twins or put them in their own cots? We are tight on space (didn't expect to fall pg so quickly after coming off the pill and were hoping to move) so was wondering if we need two cots or two cotbeds or what. Am I over thinking this at 12 + 4 weeks? Or am I just trying to be prepared.

My twins shared a cot initially. I had one cot upstairs in our bedroom for night time sleep and one cot downstairs for day time sleep. I soon found they were disturbing each other so separated them at 7 weeks. I never bothered with moses baskets or cribs.

They were separated as soon as they were born into separate incubators then separate cots in the SCBU.
