Ok so just got back from my 12 weeks scan. It's TWINS!!!! Wow. Shocked much. But how exciting Crazy times ahead.

Our house is a weird layout, due to integral garage we only have kitchen downstairs, then the lounge, 2 bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. Babies will be in with us (of course) but DP has two boys from previous relationship who we have week on week off so the second bedroom is of course theirs. Hence why we were planning to move before falling pg. We must just be super fertile or very lucky as we only dtd twice the month I fell!

I was planning on having the crib from my mum that she used for my sister and I, then my cousins were put in it, then my niece and nephew (of course new mattresses) so I wanted to carry on the tradition. It is bigger than a moses basket but I don't' think two babies will fit in lol. As with the layout of our house I don't think we will need moses baskets as they can just go in the bedroom in the cot/s for daytime sleeps too so I don't think we will bother getting them.

Thank you that is very kind of you and as I'm sure I will have many questions I'm sure will be in touch I think if I hadn't found mumsnet I'd be freaking out right about now! DP is being very laid back which is helpful to me and he has a very level head and can see the practical side of things so I know we will all be ok I on the other hand just washed my apple with washing up liquid!

Hi, I am 19 weeks pregnant with (DCDA) twins! I didn't know about the non-ID bit! Learn something new every day!

I read on the TAMBA website that they can share a cot until x months, but at one point they get too big and start kicking eachother and waking eachother up.

I am incredibly excited by the prospect of having twins! I was just thinking today I am quite enjoying the company every day! I can feel them move around now as well, so I really feel all three of us go to work in the morning etc. :-)

My sis has twins (non-id). They shared a cot to start with, until about 7 months old (first a double carry cot then a proper cot).
They are fab. The first 3 months or so were tough for her, but I think becuase they got used to the noise of the other one they are great sleepers - can sleep through anything. Once the sleeping was sorted it was easier and once they got older it became positively easy because they entertain each other. She would say it is easier than having a baby and toddler because at least they generally want to the same things at the same time and have similar interests. I am not sure all twin mothers would agree with that!

As a sonographer myself, I'm very disappointed to hear how misinformed your sonographer was although to be fair there is huge inconsistency with how sonographers get trained in the UK which really needs addressing! My training is through a post graduate degree and I'm trained in all aspects of ultrasound, but very often dating scans are done by nurses/midwifes/HCAs who have just been taught how to get the measurement needed for dating and little else. Not necessarily a huge problem but it often leads to a lot of confusion caused by the things they say to patients. Anyway I digress...

Been manic with mine today haha.

Both of my sets were 2 placentas and 2 sacs yet one set are identical and one set aren't :-)

Zygosity testing is £80 - we had the girls tested at a year but the boys at a couple of months due to health problems in one twin.

Mine shared a cot - the girls until 8 months and the boys until 6 months.

Sorry Quilty I missed your post and have only just seen it. That's interesting to know. Admittedly twin one was hiding so I had to be scanned 4 times (my BMI of 31 didn't help either ) but that shouldn't have changed what she knows about twins. She told me on the first scan they were non id. Oh well either way I'm getting very very excited now just have to wait till Nov to hold them.

Oh that's not too much. We've said that unless it is totally obvious they are id or non id we will have them tested, but of course the main concern is that they are both ok as with every pregnancy, multiple or not.

This is defo the way forward I think, if they don't like it then we can separate them.

Re getting them tested, I kow quite a few twins and in every case where they are physically alike enough to justify a DNA test, it has come back id. My sister's twins are non-id, and there is no doubt about it (one blond hair blue eyes and one dark hair green eyes) so not worth the cost of a test. I do though know one couple who have twins who look id but they were told they were non-id at your stage and have just accepted that. They tell people they are non-id and have never had them tested.

That's what I'm thinking Littleolivetree Although maybe going to look at buggy's last night was a bit soon haha. I was annoyed though as the mothercare near us only had the double bugaboo (I seem to be in the minority that doesn't like bugaboos haha) that was crazy money, or just the double forward facing strollers. I wanted to look at the Obaby Zezu twin pramette, I want to be able to see my babies and felt the same when we thought it was a single pg. However the Obaby is online only. Very annoying. So we popped to babies are us and they didn't have single double buggy at all!!!! We only went to look so early on cos I want to be able to have a 'play' and see how easy it will be to manouver and fold down.

My sis has said if she wants me to she will provisionally book November off so that when DP has to return to work she can come and help which I thought was lovely and my mum is now retired so she has said she will help too Feeling very blessed with babies and family.

franykins if you want to try out buggies then find a twin group near you and head over there if you can. There's one near me and I am planning to have a go at all their buggies :-). I quite like the look of the Out and About, but that is because I want a three-wheeler.

That's what I was thinking neversleepagain but hoping for at least late October. EDD is 30th Nov. Mum is gutted as she has booked and paid for a holiday at beginning of Nov (even though I said is that a good idea even when we thought it was one as you just never know) But maybe I should say to my sis to just warn work it could be any time from Mid sept onwards? What would you suggest?

Aah you're post really made me smile. I rememeber having that same 'shit there's two of them' moment in the scan. Actually the Sonographer went out to get a colleague before telling me. I had a horrible 5 minutes thinking something awful had happened (like I'd got the test wrong and I wasn't really pg). Then said it was two. One of the best days of my life. . Congratulations.

RedPencils that would have scared anyone (I had the same thing with thinking I was going to be told I wasn't really pg) As it happened the sonographer didn't say anything for a while and just went "hmm" so I said is everything ok and she said well there's more than one, like it happens everyday. Which of course it must do but not to me haha.

Ah congratulations. My grandad's brother and sister are twins but there are no twins in my dad's generation or my generation. I am the first in my generation to be pregant and I would love twins, got my first scan in just over a week so I'm trying not to think about it after all one healthy baby is just as amazing as two!

I've just got the results from my blood test part of the combined test. been assessed as low risk which is great but can someone help explain. The background risk was 1:803 and the adjusted risk for twin 1 is 1:9536 & twin 2 is 1:9764. What is the background risk?

We told DP's two boys last night and they seem excited. the youngest was worried he would miss out on cuddles bless him so i told him he won't and then we spent an hour in bed watching tv and having cuddles this morning whilst waiting for DP to bring us breakfast in bed. perfect start to the weekend

With regards to due dates etc, the majority of twins are born between 34-36 weeks. They wont let you carry past 37 weeks, some consultants push it to 38 weeks but NICE guidelines for DCDA twins is 37 weeks so that already puts you at around beginning of November (if they don't surprise you early!) My waters went at 34+5, it was very unexpected. I think if you aim for end of October/beginning of September that will be about right. My EDD was 5 November and they were born 29 September.

I think momo twins they like to deliver between 32 and 34 weeks, non ids at our hospital they like to keep in until 38 weeks. Mine arrived at 33 weeks and the 2nd set at 36 weeks - ask for a tour of neonatal nearer the time so it's not quite as daunting first time as there are a lot of machines, noises and wires x

congratulations. I've got DCDA twins due end November. we've known for a while (early scan) but it still hasn't sunk in. your background risk must be age alone (mine was 1:150 old), adjusted is once they've factored in nuchal translucency and bloods.

I was planning to work until the end of September - 32 weeks. is that pushing it? my job isn't physically demanding but it's an hour's commute away. question for experienced posters - can they tell, once you get further along, how early you're likely to deliver?
