...how soon after did you go into labour and give birth?

Have a sweep booked for tomorrow morning and just wondering what other people's experiences have been. Will be 40+2 if that helps.

Thanks in advance....:)

I had a sweep with dd1 on the day I was due. I went another 11 bloody days!!

ilooklikegrotbagstoday · 20/05/2013 11:35

I had sweep a week after due date and went into labour the next night. Thank goodness because i was huge and really had had enough. Good luck and hope it's not much longer for you.

xmarksaspot · 20/05/2013 11:36

I had one at lunchtime when i was having the odd contraction (every 1/2 hour) and gave birth at 8pm

JaquelineHyde · 20/05/2013 11:41

I had a sweep at +7 and then again at +11 and neither of them did anything.

I was induced at +12 which also failed but they were able to break my waters at 12pm at +13 and DS2 was born 10hrs later.

God know how long he would have stayed in if it was left to him...He's now 19 days old and driving me mad Grin

littlemissnormal · 20/05/2013 11:46

IMO sweeps only work if you're about to go into labour anyway so a bit of a waste of time.
I had sweeps on my due date with all 3 DCs and 2 still had to be induced at 40+14 but didn't come for another 4 days and DC 3 didn't come until 40+10.

tazmo · 20/05/2013 14:50

Hi echo above. I was contracting non specifically and ended up having the sweep to move things along. Was q painful as I don't think my body was ready and I was in a lot of pain (hadn't slept for a week - made my non specific contractions worse and went to hospital only to be told the sweep had made my hormones go AWOL but the contractions were not doing anything to move baby down and I was in a lot of pain!). Ended up electing to have a c section because I'd had enough which I might not have done if left well alone (was able to have elective c section due to first bring emergency c).

seekingpeaceandquiet · 20/05/2013 15:53

I had a sweep 40+2 at 6 pm, went into labour at 8ish had baby ds at 10.19pm. It wasn't painful at all, just a bit uncomfortable. I was really scared to have one but needed to try as baby wasn't growing so it was a sweep or induction the next day.

Good Luck!

cupcake78 · 20/05/2013 15:55

Latent labour started 12 hours afterwards. Baby came 5 days after that.

nohalfmeasures · 20/05/2013 15:58

sweep at +7, born 12hrs later. Very, very quick once it got going, stage 2 labour 1 min!

rootypig · 20/05/2013 16:01

Hi Mildred Smile

Sweep on due date, mild contractions that night. Got v excited - stopped. Sweep a week later, spent the day trogging the shops, much to the alarm of the lovely sales assistants. Went into labour that evening.

Get your MW to tell you if your cervix has softened / effaced at all.

And brace yourself, I found it v uncomfortable!

MaggieMaggieMaggieMcGill · 20/05/2013 16:10

Go and grab some Evening Primrose oil capsules, from the chemist if you have to and get three this evening and three tomorrow morning, using a sterile needle, poke a hole in them and then shove them up your chuff.
EPO contains prosta-glandins which ripen your cervix.
In order for a sweep to have any effect, your cervix needs to be ripening, so doing the epo capsules alongside the sweep is going to up your chances of it being effective.

Khaleese · 20/05/2013 16:11

Yes do brace yourself. I left crying, it's really horrid.

Stretch and sweep are not appropriate words imho.

Also never went into labour.

Sorry realise that i'm not helpful.

< need to leave thread not helping >

Splatt34 · 20/05/2013 16:20

i am having one tomorrow too at 40+3.
Last time at 40+6 went into labour the following evening. fingers crossed!!

Nervousfirsttimer · 20/05/2013 16:22

Sweep Friday afternoon, contractions started Friday night, gave birth........ Monday morning at 330 by c section! Bit of a nightmare, apparently I don't dilate very well!

LifeOfPee · 20/05/2013 16:23

40+1 had a sweep. Although I was already 1-2cm it didn't really do anything except dislodge some plug. Had another at 40+6 when I was still 1-2 but could stretch to 3-4 and went into labour the next morning and my beautiful, perfect DS was born that afternoon. Smile He's almost 6 weeks old now and is awesome.

I didn't find it painful at all or even that uncomfortable. I was having a giggle with the MW about the modesty towel. What's the point when she's got her whole hand up your chuff? She had to tell me not to laugh because I was pushing her hand out! Grin

eltsihT · 20/05/2013 16:32

I had a sweep with ds1 at 41wks was already 2cm dilated, son born 42wks after being induced.

I also have a sweep tomorrow again at 41wks

Fingers crossed!

mildred37 · 20/05/2013 16:42

Wow quite a mixed bag of responses! Thanks fr taking the time to reply. I think I'll cry if she says I'm not dilated.

Not so sure about the EP capsule advice....

rootypig · 20/05/2013 17:08

Yeah I wondered - Maggie, is it safe to put the capsules into your vagina?

OP if you're serious about getting this baby out, grit your teeth and ask your MW to be thorough. All sweeps are not created equal.

MaggieMaggieMaggieMcGill · 21/05/2013 00:30

Yes it's safe. Just wash your hands before and after and use a sterilised needle to poke a hole in them.
I did it with both of my pregnancies.

Livingwithmymother · 21/05/2013 00:34

I had a sweep today I'm 40+2... Didn't find it painful as I closed my eyes and breathed in deep. But that was at 1pm... It's now 12:34am and nothing!

mildred37 · 21/05/2013 14:40

Well had my sweep at 10.30am, after a night of period-type pain. Wasn't painful, most just a bit uncomfortable. Was 1cm dilated but cervix was soft so managed to stretch to 2cm. All looking positive for an imminent arrival, so fingers crossed :)

eltsihT · 21/05/2013 16:49

Good luck, Mildred. I went for my sweep today, and the wouldn't do one as my DC head was no longer engaged. Feeling really down and quite pissed off. At least I am booked in for an induction on Friday.

Legs uncrossed! Hope it goes well
