Help! I need a maternity dress for a wedding, any suggestions?

Hello!

I'm having a struggle trying to find a decent maternity dress suitable for a June wedding.

I just looked at Isabella Oliver, but most of the dresses seem quite plain for a wedding and the more jazzy ones are REALLY expensive. As I'll only be wearing it the once I can't justify spending hundreds when I have baby stuff that needs buying too.

Can anyone help with my shopping mission and suggest a few online retailers that sell fashionable dresses for under £100ish?

I'm 32, not 52 and most maternity stuff seems to be so boring.

Have a look on asos, they do a good maternity range.

How far gone will you be at the wedding?

I have a wedding next week and will be 18 weeks by then and I searched everywhere for a dress (I have quite a noticeable bump already!) and in the end found a lovely non-maternity dress in monsoon in a larger size than I normally wear.

If you're only likely to be going to one wedding this year it might be worth hiring one instead. One site that does this is Hire Expectations, I got a lovely designer maternity dress from there last year for under £50 and felt fabulous. They post it out to you and you just send it back after.

I'll be 5 months by the wedding. I've just recieved loads of dresses from asos in a size bigger than normal, but they were all huge. I'll check out the maternity section though.

I think I've found one, bit boring, but pretty nonetheless

try debenhams. i bought a lovely pink and black maternity dress by red herring for a wedding last week. was only £38!! the online store might not have any in stock so try the actual store. when i tried to order online there were none left in any size but plenty instore.
i wore it with a little cropped black cardigan and black cut out pumps. plus it will work as a maternity dress for other occasions/nights out as doesnt look too wedding -y. really comfy and felt really pretty in it. :)

wispa31 · 16/05/2013 15:52

im shite with techie stuff or i would post a link. it was pink with black lace design, nice bright pink (though not cerise!)

BraveLilBear · 16/05/2013 15:57

Smitten a word about ASOS stuff - the maternity wear seems to be bigger than normal sizes on me (and most other people I've heard from agree), I got a size 8 dress for when I was about 5 months and it was very big and frumpy - partly because it's modelled on a 5ft 8 model and I'm only 5ft 4.

Impressed that you found maternity wear on the HIgh Street Wispa! Will try my local Debenhams and see if they have anything - personally I've been apalled by the lack of high street maternity wear available full stop, let alone for posh stuff!

I am in the same boat - I have a wedding at 32 weeks and an evening do the week after (thank god they're totally different sets of friends)... So I'll be watching this thread for some tips!

Seraphine do some nice stuff.

Tiffany rose has gorgeous dresses although a bit over £100....
Try Seraphine too and also mamas and papas, they often have 30 percent off their maternity wear. Their dresses a bit more jersey style / printed although can be dressed up or down whereas tiff rose more dressy evening wear style.
Good luck!

wispa31 · 16/05/2013 16:12

brave - i didnt like any of the serephine or similar brands, far too expensive and wouldnt get much wear out of them. there was another site i saw a few nice dresses on, cant remember the name though. werent expensive either and would also work for other occasions.

wispa31 · 16/05/2013 16:16

google yummy mummy maternity. thats where i saw nice dresses that didnt break the bank. there was a floral print jersey style dress in 2 diff colour options. would be nice teamed with a light blazer/jacket and pumps. or heels if you can stand them now you,re prego. i cant.

lollypopsicle · 16/05/2013 16:17

Tiffany Rose dresses are lovely and although expensive, sell well on eBay after. Or try eBay yourself for one. Most have only been worn once or twice and are of styles still sold on the website.

Heathbaby · 16/05/2013 16:23

I got a great, simple (black and cream), stretchy but smart dress by Seraphine from M&S for £55 which I will also be able to wear post-pregnancy. I got lots of great compliments on it at a recent wedding and was glad I hadn't forked out a fortune. Smile

Littlemissexpecting · 16/05/2013 17:08

Have you looked on eBay?
Or I was in mammas and pappas yesterday and they had a couple of nice dresses, one was pink lace if I remember.

sparkle101 · 16/05/2013 17:14

I got a really nice pink and black maxi maternity dress off e bay for 35 which I wore to my friends wedding. It was really nice!

elsabel · 16/05/2013 19:26

I bought one off asos for a wedding i went to just a couple of weeks ago. They have a large selection and reasonable priced, mine was only £25

ArtemisTheHunter · 16/05/2013 19:50

I've got the same dilemma OP. Wedding at the end of june when I'll be 32 weeks and really don't want to spend a lot of money. Am starting at the cheaper end and if I can't find anything suitable at Asos or New Look i'll work my way up... If you feel like spending a bit more (or get desperate enough to!) there are some occasion dresses online at Crave Maternity or Babes with Babies but they are quite pricey (and as usual not wildly exciting). I'm looking for one that I can wear afterwards, some are also BFing dresses which would justify the expense a bit if you think ahead to the Christmas party season. Good luck!

LittleMilla · 16/05/2013 20:01

I am 30 weeks and plan to wear this in a few weeks' time: www.mothercare.com/Blooming-Marvellous-Floral-Print-Woven-Tea-Dress/LY5524,default,pd.html

Got a cool headpiece and plan to buy some nude heels/wedges. Looks WAY more expensive and IM(humble)O quite trendy for maternity. I too hated everything else I'd seen and drew a blank with ASOS having ordered a few things.

moonmrs · 16/05/2013 20:07

I've been disgusted too at the lack of maternity wear on the high street, really struggling to find anything at all - most shops have a tiny tiny section with about 5 items in.

Anyway, I'm going to a wedding on Saturday, am 22 weeks, and I ended up getting a non maternity dress from Debenhams (in the Wallis section) Its a pink and black floral maxi dress in floaty fabric, and is beautiful. I'd recommend looking in the non maternity sections for more choice and perhaps going up a size if needed? Good luck.

moonmrs · 16/05/2013 20:09

If you're interested, this is the one I got here Its very flattering on.

AnythingNotEverything · 16/05/2013 20:18

eBay is great for maternity wear- i've bought loads and not spent more than a tenner on anything

I was at a wedding a couple of weeks ago, at 16 weeks (2nd baby plus lots of hot cross buns = definite bump) and wore a navy, jersey, Boden wrap dress (via ebay) with a bright orange clutch and a very sparkly necklace. Definitely felt dressed up enough.

moonmrs · 16/05/2013 20:19

Yes I'd second eBay, you can get some right bargains on there, I have more stuff from eBay than anywhere else.

Beatrixpotty · 16/05/2013 21:03

At 5 months you don't necessarily need a maternity dress.I would look for a normal dress in a stretchy fabric.I don't know what your style is but I had a couple of Vivienne Westwood anglomania dresses bought pre-pregnany that I wore up to about 36 weeks.Out of budget brand new but look on ebay.I also found All Saints quite good for non-maternity maternity wear and Zara & H&M.

BentleyBelly · 17/05/2013 07:45

I had exactly the same dilemma and my mum took me to Debenhams. I was really surprised at the amount of non maternity dresses that looked good. Try empire line with floaty fronts, i got a gorgeous silver dress from Phase Eight, i think it was called aria or something similar. Debenhams has a big sale on at the mo too.

BentleyBelly · 17/05/2013 13:14

Its this one www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/phase-eight/Black-Tie-Events/Aria-Dress/202026827 I am 25 weeks with a huge bump measuring 27 weeks and it is really flattering, I don't feel like the lump I am in it!
