DIY and stitch I hope you feel better soon!

I had my 16-week midwife appointment this morning and it was OK but not as reassuring as I would have hoped! The midwife was lovely and offered to listen to the heartbeat without me asking because she could see I was very anxious (she even wrote it in my notes!) even though she said "we don't normally listen at this stage as it's too early and it might take a while to find it". So she put a funnel-type of thing on my bump and seems to have heard the baby straight away because she put the doppler on the same spot immediately but then we couldn't hear anything bar the placenta and the blood flowing :-( The stupid thing made lots of cracking noises too, she said she had to get a new one and was really sweet, bless her, she said "come on baby I know you're there, stop hiding so that mummy can stop worrying". After a couple of minutes of probing around she said that the doppler picked it up (as it displayed 160-170) but it was too faint and the baby must have been hiding at the back... She then gave up; I asked her a couple of times if she had heard it and she reassured me that she had. Still I'm panicking a little and am really disappointed - with DD, we heard the heartbeart at 16 weeks very clearly. I am at work now and can't really concentrate (and I have a million things to do - arrghhhhhh!!!) I know my placenta is anterior which complicates things and her doppler was quite old....I would like to think that she wouldn't have lied and told me that she heard it if she hadn't and that if there were any reason for concern she would have sent me to the EPU for a scan (I even think I asked her half-jokingly "you've heard it right, I don't have to go to EPU?) I don't know what to do now, I just hope I start feeling the baby soon (I think I have already but it's very faint and I'm not sure if it's the baby or my insides!)

andadietcoke · 17/05/2013 15:37

pentagon try not to worry. She wouldn't lie to you. My mw couldn't find the heartbeat of the baby with the anterior placenta at my 16w checkup either. Even at 20w at maternity triage they really struggled. Big hugs xx

Pentagon · 17/05/2013 15:47

thanks for the reassurance anda :-) I was just so sure I would hear it at this appointment and calm down as a result because that's what happened with DD but no...! Did you panic when this happened or is it just me?

shellsocks · 17/05/2013 15:48

Oh try not to worry pentagon you're suppose to be on the upswing now! It sounds fine, 160-170 can't be anything else so focus on that Smile

Yes, Skeeter Shock I'm really struggling for any boys names I like as much as DS's name this time it's going to be hard if its a boy....and I get middle name pick this time (DHs family have a tradition for first sons so he got to pick for DS) so double trouble! Got a girls name all sorted from my very first PG, but pretty sure it will be a boy Confused help!

GardenWorm · 17/05/2013 16:04

Pentagon try and see it logically (hard I know) it's really not in your midwife's best interests to lie to you and she has no reason to do so. She heard a heartbeat and the Doppler detected one. There IS therefore a baby with a beating heart currently lounging around, probably sucking their thumb, inside your tum. X

Shell I must confess I am a wierd name liker! DH just picked some and then himself thought wtf? a few weeks later at his own choices Grin. He has a bad surname which doesn't help - got to think of the rhyming connotations and the playground banter! I occasionally feel guilty that I have allowed my daughter to take it whilst (as we live in sin) I blissfully carry on with a normal one. It's a valid reason for a long engagement don't you agree?!!!

shellsocks · 17/05/2013 16:17

Are you comfortable sharing garden I'm constantly looking for inspiration and am not totally averse to unusual names....my criteria is they have to be a name tho, most of DHs don't even qualify Wink At the mo all I have are Elliot, Aaron, Jake and Max....none of which I love like DS (Harrison) .... am aware am only 14w tho so it's a bit early to be thinking like this Blush

andadietcoke · 17/05/2013 16:29

pentagon yep. Even though I'd seen them the day before on a scan!! It worried me all the way to the 20w trip to maternity triage.

Pentagon · 17/05/2013 16:40

thanks shell, garden and anda! Feeling a bit calmer now...if only I weren't so paranoid! I think I've felt a few fluttering movements in my tummy this afternoon, I just hope it's the baby and they get stronger soon!

BumpKitty · 17/05/2013 17:07

pentagon I had anterior placenta with DD and every bloody appt they freaked me out trying to find the heartbeat and it does mean you feel the movements later too. I deffo don't think she'd lie to you and it's the pesky placenta blocking everything. 4 weeks till scan time though, the little beggar can't hide from that :)

Sorry for all the sickness, hope you and DD feel better soon stitch and diy

As for names, DD has a very popular name , I found this out at my first baby group were 4 out of 11 babies were called it, it upset me for a while so I want something less common this time. Saying that though my fave boy name is one that's usually top 10 Confused

And....... I got my letter! 1 in 30,000! Very pleased

DIYandEatCake · 17/05/2013 17:26

pentagon the midwife struggled to find dd's heartbeat at 16w too, I had an anterior placenta too. It stressed me out then and I wasn't half so paranoid last pregnancy! Sounds like she found something, just that baby wasn't in the most helpful position. You know when you can feel them move, there's a whole new thing to stress about ('eek they haven't moved yet today what's gone wrong?!')

Dp came home and has taken dd with him to the (family-type) pub to meet up with his work friends so that's a massive relief, I get a rest and she gets some more entertaining company! I hate hate hate these migraines, had them til 17w with dd, am hoping they stop like that this time too. I didn't have a single one then til a few months after I had her, that thought is keeping me going! I am actually skinnier now than pre pg thanks to all the chucking up - midwife is going to lecture me about weight again. got referred to consultant for low bmi last time, who practically laughed me out of the room - I'm perfectly healthy, just one of those annoying people with a fast metabolism (and no boobs to speak of).

Got my booking and scan appointments in the post today but had to change them as I'll be on holiday - scan is now 5 June (nearly 13w).

We really struggled to find any names we agreed on last time, took ages. We both love dd's name now though, it really suits her. Dp and I just have completely different ideas, there was no crossover last time until we came to dd's name on a long car journey one day.

shell hope you feel better soon.

ChocolateCremeEggBag · 17/05/2013 19:05

pentagon - sounds like you've been through it today, I can't remember when I first heard DS's HB but was in ignorant bliss of all the worry we are now going through.

I really regret not giving DS "Danger" as a middle name, still think I may add it by deed poll one day when bored.

Scan tomorrow, suddenly starting to get the fear.

DIYandEatCake · 17/05/2013 19:14

Ooh good luck chocolate!
We sometimes joke that dd's middle name should have been 'contrary'!

Bakingtins · 17/05/2013 19:29

My DH is pissing me off. There is "carrying on regardless" and not obsessing, and there is just plain thoughtless. He's just asked me to help him lift our mahoosive pine dresser....erm, no. He's not bothering to attend the scan on Thursday, after all, it's only to find out if there is a third child or merely a fourth miscarriage in there, nothing important. The consultant was already a bit that he didn't come last time and that was just a "bits in working order" scan.

IBelieveInPink · 17/05/2013 19:36

Shell, you have 2 of my top boy names on your list!! :)

Chocolate - good luck for tomorrow!

Baking - is he scared? And covering it up by trying to forget about it?

shellsocks · 17/05/2013 19:44

Great results bump that's fantastic Smile

Glad your getting a break diy sounds so tough Hmm

choc I'm worried I'm gonna regret any name if I have DS2 unless something grabs me from out the blue!

bakin that's just not on is it, time for a kick up the bum heart to heart maybe?

pink you need to divulge your list as if we have similar taste you may have others I will like Smile Obviously only if you want to share that info online!

BumpKitty · 17/05/2013 19:47

baking do you have someone else who can go with you? It may spur him into action if he sees you do really want someone there, ibip might be right or he may genuinely not realise how fucking scary it is

BlackholesAndRevelations · 17/05/2013 19:52

Aw so much to catch up on!

Pentagon- there's no way your midwife would have lied to you! Can't imagine the fear but I'm sure your littlun is fine in there!

Chocolate- good luck for tomorrow!

DIY- migraines sound horrendous, you poor thing Sad

Re: my scan, I was so relieved to see that amazing little heartbeat! It's made me actually believe there's a baby in there! Starting to get excited though trying not to get too excited... Told parents and in laws. Mum delighted though did ask if we'd manage, lol! In laws are pleased but think they're keeping a little calmer as dp's cousin just had medical termination at after 12 weeks and we lost two so they know there are no guarantees... Hit them hard, as they had four as easily as anything.

Happy weekend! I'm totally dreading telling my boss...

BlackholesAndRevelations · 17/05/2013 19:54

Ooh yeah great news bump, and sorry about your dh baking- give him a kick up the bum!!

BumpKitty · 17/05/2013 19:57

Ah blackholes thanks :), is the dread founded on anything? I was terrified of telling my boss and he is absolutely lovely, unfortunately he found out when I had to run off to the hospital with my leaky vagina so that took the matter out of my hands Blush

IBelieveInPink · 17/05/2013 20:00

Shell - my boy names are Harrison, Max, Adam and Nathan (Nate).
I think this one is a girl however so don't think I will get to use any of them!!!

BumpKitty · 17/05/2013 20:02

Would you shorten Harrison to Hal? I like Hal

IBelieveInPink · 17/05/2013 20:07

Hadn't thought of that bump. I was thinking more like Harris. Or maybe Harry. (although I detest one direction with a passion and bloody harry styles is everywhere, so hopefully they will split up soon!)

shellsocks · 17/05/2013 20:29

I was going to shorten Harrison to all sorts but he is defo just a Harrison (H on texts!) now, I love his name (and him Grin) so much Smile

I like Nate a lot pink but DH is someone who thinks they should have a proper full name and I'm not as keen on Nathan?

Vixjane · 17/05/2013 20:30

pentagon hope you're feeling less stressed now. I don't think the midwife would have lied but she prob didn't want to stress you out if you were already anxious.

diy hope you're feeling better

fingers crossed for you tomorrow chocolate*

baking maybe you should tell him straight out you'd like him to be at the scan and appts? He might just not realise how he's coming across to you

Aoifebelle · 17/05/2013 21:19

Good luck for tomorrow Chocolate scans on a Saturday whatever next.

Pentagon, step away from the paranoia. MWs don't just say things to reassure us crazy ladies, they could be struck off for telling porky pies. Repeat after me - Today I am pregnant.

baking your fella needs a bit of sorting out. Set up a thread on here, give us ten minutes and he will carry you to your scan.

Well made it out for a quick drink with colleagues after work, even allowed myself half a shandy to dispell suspicions. Got chatting to one of the bosses and he practically offered me a job I have been angling for for a bit. He has to get rid of person currently in role (she treats her staff like crap, if he doesn't bin her sooner or later he will end up in a tribunal which we will lose). However, her contract runs out in August - I will hopefully go on mat leave end of november. Not sure I will be such an attractive propsal once he finds out about bump!

Strangely not very perturbed - baby or job? baby or job? BABY!!
