No NT scans in my area - you have to go privately (which we will do)
NHS 12 week scan is a v quick - yes there is a baby there - and no detailed scan until 20 weeks. Postcode lottery again.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/05/2013 14:51

Oh my gosh. I just booked an early scan at the local private hospital... Next weds! The day before booking in. Eek and double eek; this is going to be a long week!

DIYandEatCake · 07/05/2013 14:53

baking it is rubbish and I'm Angry on your behalf that you're not getting better care. I was surprised to be scanned early on for pain without bleeding, but I think to be honest it was just down to the lovely nurse at our epu who I saw several times during my miscarriage a few months ago. You're right, there should be a standard of care across the country, and better training for some frontline staff in dealing sensitively with women who are miscarrying (don't get me started on the gormless male nurse on the out of hours phone line...!)

Vocalista86 · 07/05/2013 15:10

Congratulations Mummy! I remember you from the TTC thread, great to see you here.

WillSanta I too am majorly procrastinating, and eating! Oh my goodnes eating everything. I am sure my work colleagues will guess. So far today I have had (all since arriving at work): a banana, a yogurt, some crisps, 2 sandwiches, a drink from Pret, a pot of edamame beans from pret, a plum and I'm not on to yogurt covered cranberries (which I promised myself I would open until 3pm despite having hungar pangs a long while before). Is this normall?!?

Soon I am going to look very fat with my food baby because the real baby is only the size of a prune I've found out this week! Blush

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/05/2013 15:38

DIY- same care as I get here, by the looks of it (not that I know for sure as I can't get to see a doctor, but going by what my friend was told) I've been very interested as to the variations in care, eg that mummy will be having an early scan after one mc at six weeks. That wouldn't happen here. I agree it should be standard procedure nationwide.

Aoifebelle · 07/05/2013 15:46

Baking do you mind if I ask what area you are in. Not offering early reassurance scans is one thing, but no NT scan - I am actually quite shocked that this happens. Talk about postcode lottery!

Santa so sorry you are feeling pessimistic. I am not too experienced at this game, but I am always really fascinated at how the same woman can have totally different feeling pregnancies - regardless of outcome / gender / age etc. Some feel well and it ends crap, some feel crap and it ends well, and everything in between. I see you have had two MCs and one DD. Putting my statistician hat on - you have four different experiences of pregnancy - given the spectrum of how different women feel, it is entirely possible that the similarity of feeling between your two MCs and this pregnancy is down to chance. I understand that your experience is by far the most powerful factor in how you feel and that your experience is telling you something may not be right, but try and keep hold of the stats. To put in a very dry way - the stats say you don't have enough data for a correlation - there is every chance that bean is fine and dandy. xx

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/05/2013 15:48

Oh just realised nt is nuchal translucency- we get that here. That really is crap then baking Sad

Mummytothearkbuilder · 07/05/2013 16:06

Its awful that the standard of care is so varied across not just the area but also the particular hospital.

Blackhole - I was surprised when they said that I would be getting a scan at 8 weeks but obviously won't turn them down. Its does seem cruel to offer it in some areas and not in others :-(

Santa - sorry you are feeling pessimistic - I think when you have had a miscarriage it is so hard not to feel that way about future pregnancies. Both me and DH are so nervous about this pregnancy even though logically there is no reason for us to be - we have a positive result and currently no bleeding or pain which is all good so why do we feel so nervous!!

pumpkinsweetie · 07/05/2013 16:17

Congratulations mummy Flowers
bakingtins That's awful re not having nt scans in your area, we have had them here as a matter of course for quite some years.
Here in the South East Kent we get a dating scan, and if you are not quite 12weeks when that is performed you go in for bloods and an nt at 12 weeks and they combine the two results.
As far as i know they don't offer early scans in my neck of the woods unless you have had bleeding or pain. Hoping this has changed as after having my mc in Feb I'm very nervous and would like to see my baby early.

If i cannot get one on the nhs, does anyone know how much roughly would it be for a private early scan ? And how would i go about getting one and would this be done abdominally or vaginally (I'm rather overweight) so I'm guessing that doesn't help.
Sorry for all the questions but seeing my bean would put my mind at rest somewhatBlush

I think the postcode lottery is disgusting and all women should have access to the same treatment, especially women that have had problems during any pregnancy.

pumpkinsweetie · 07/05/2013 16:19

I also had 21 week scans with my dc, they are very thorough on those. They are quite stingey about giving you pics though, even though they are a £1 each!

IBelieveInPink · 07/05/2013 16:39

Ooh lots to catch up on! I am doing no work today, far too distracted.

DIY - 9 weeks! Time flies for other people doesn't it, seems like only yesterday. Yet for yourself is ages!! Not long to go.

Mummy - lovely to see you hear. Pleased you are with us. My lines didn't get strong quickly enough for my liking either, but they do get stronger. Try and limit yourself to 2 a week and you should see the difference more.

Aoife - my DH has also been feeling neglected. Or was until I explained to him that the lack of attention was purely down to how scared I was. He hadn't realised (silly boy) would that help?

Black holes and Baking- I tantrumed at my doctor after the 2nd mc for investigations, and then asked for a scan this time (no faking pain- too scared to do that) and didn't get an early scan. Had to pay for mine. Is Shocking how different the care is, and makes me Really angry - not at the lovely ladies who benefit from it of course, I would if I could, just at the standards. Maybe we should campaign about this or something.

Santa- oh lovely I know it is terrifying. I have been in a state of panic all the way through as aside from sore boobs and a bit of tiredness, I really have had no symptoms. But baby is fine, and kicking away in there. Try not to concern yourself with symptoms, although I know how hard it is - I have been doing that for the last 10 weeks!!

Pumpkin - in my area (Bristol) you can get an early scan for £70 privately. But again, varies massively by area!!

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/05/2013 16:40

Mine's costing £110, pumpkin. Far too much of course- really must stop spending money but I really want to tell our parents after some kind of proof, and don't want to wait til 12 weeks. I have the mmc scenario in my head too, of course, and won't believe it's there til I see it! Mental. I'm glad I can share with similarly mental ladies! Grin Wink

andadietcoke · 07/05/2013 16:41

pumpkin mine was £95. They seem to start at about £60 and someone was quoted £150+ I think.

I had an early scan at the EPU for bleeding and at 7+4 it was done with the dildo cam. Nothing to do with my size (am also 'on the larger side of life' as the registrar in the ante natal clinic described it!), but was standard for them at that gestation. My private one at 10+4 was also half done trans vaginally due to where one of the babies was - they couldn't get the right images abdominally. It wasn't too uncomfortable, and I had no bleeding or anything afterwards.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/05/2013 16:42

Oh gosh, of course I don't begrudge anyone at all getting an early scan, please don't think that mummy!! You deserve one! It's just a shame the rest of us can't have one too, but yes any if us would snap it up if we could Flowers

andadietcoke · 07/05/2013 16:49

Hi mummy - I was a little bit before your time, but lovely to have you over here. I don't have any faith in the pregnancy tests - at 7w mine suddenly went light (about an hour before I went to the EPU with bleeding, so was completely convinced that was the end of it) but everything was fine. Try to have faith in the tests you've already done Grin

Mummytothearkbuilder · 07/05/2013 16:50

Pumpkin - I am in Cambridgeshire and with my last pregnancy I paid £99 for a private scan.

To be honest if I wasnt getting one at my hospital I would pay - you cant put a price on piece of mind.

Not sure if it makes a difference but my local hospital is 'Hinchingbrooke hospital' and although it is an NHS hospital I think it is run differently to most hospitals - its was feature on the news a bit a while ago - I think its run by a board / private company called 'CIRCLE' similar to a private hospital so not sure if that means that do things slightly differently???

Blackholes - dont be daft I didnt think that at all hun - its disgusting that the care varies so much xxx

pumpkinsweetie · 07/05/2013 17:20

Thankyou everyone, kind of skint at the moment but if i can stretch to affording it then i think it will be well worth it. Once booked in with midwife going to voice my concerns and see whether she will refer me first through nhs as everything is worth a shot. My mc was never recorded so i doubt i will get a referral but worth a try.

GardenWorm · 07/05/2013 17:32

pumpkin is Tonbridge way any good for you? I paid £60 for one in that area...

pumpkinsweetie · 07/05/2013 17:39

Thankyou garden, but too far. Near or around Canterbury would be where i'd be looking at x

Bodicea · 07/05/2013 17:55

Hello, had scan today. It was sort of ok. Nt was above average but still within normal limits - 2.4mm. I always had in me head I would get an amnio 2.5mm whatever the bloods came back as so this is uncomfortably close. Was close to teard in the scan, not the nice experience I was hoping for. Why is nothing smooh sailing for me.? i just wanted this one bloody thing to be simple. I know it's not offiacaly high but it's not low and think its gonna put me on edge for rest of pregnancy. Maybe nts aren't such a good thing. Have to wait for bloods to come back too so hopefully they will be low and will feel better

ChocolateCremeEggBag · 07/05/2013 18:14

Sorry your scan wasn't the comfort you wanted Bod - I take it that it's your day job means you understood everything much more?
Are there actual stats available for the NT test once you have the bloods done or is it just then an amnio?

OP posts:
Aoifebelle · 07/05/2013 18:16

Oh arse bod, sorry you didn't get the simple outcome you wanted. The having to think about all the angles/possibilities gets really tiring. On the positive side, you results are in the normal range, and the risk can only be calculated with the bloods back. There is every chance that your bloods will bring the risk right back down. I think there are quite a few threads on this in the antenatal testing area. X

IBelieveInPink · 07/05/2013 18:20

Oh bollocks bod. I'm sorry it hasn't helped at all. What is the normal range? Is it still within that or borderline?
I know it will be an agonising wait for bloods now. Hope you are okay. Keep busy, take your mind off things, if you possibly can.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/05/2013 18:25

Oh sorry bod Sad I really hope the bloods make things better. Hugs xx

pumpkinsweetie · 07/05/2013 18:26

Sorry to hear your nt scan didn't bring the results you wanted bod, i hope the bloods lower your risk down x
