Anyone had Fetal MRI at Kings--help me prepare...

Had a scan today (am 27 wks). Baby has severe ventriculomegaly, excess fluid on both sides of the brain. I've been told this could mean anything from absolutely nothing, to potentially severe brain problem or tumour. So am having MRI so they can get a good look inside the brain and see that everything is OK. At least I know it's not chromosone related, as I had clear amnio already.
I'm going to get a call in next 2 days or so to go to Kings for scanhas anyone been and what is it like? Is it as noisy as a normal MRI? I'll be going by myself as DH can't get time off and I won't be getting any results that daywill be going back to my own consultant for them.

I have been thinking about you but wanted to wait till you posted

I think you should ring this afternoon tbh and avoid another 'what if' night .. but it is your decision of course

no news is good news Arabica.

Really wishing you and baby well x

bundle · 24/05/2006 13:57

I remember ringing up after my amnio, heart thumping so much I could barely hear the dialling tone Sad poor you.

PinkTulips · 24/05/2006 14:42

thinking of you pet {{{hugs}}}

do try to ring this evening, either way it's better to know today than tomorrow IMO

tamum · 24/05/2006 14:45

Oh me too bundle. Arabica, I would ring (easy for me to say). Everything crossed for you.
xxx

Arabica · 24/05/2006 19:05

I will call tomorrow. Am just scared that the reason they haven't phoned is that the news is too awful to tell me on the phone and so they have sent me out an appointment to come to hospital. Yes, I know it's paranoid but...

emkana · 24/05/2006 19:23

IME they are more likely to get in touch immediately when the news are bad.

I really really hope you will get good news tomorrow. I will be thinking of you!

Arabica · 24/05/2006 19:46

On the other hand they may simply not have had a chance to look at it yet. Hell, I don't know. I will definitely ring tomorrow and if I get any news I'll post here rightaway.

Phoned hospital (was nearly sick with nerves). Very nice receptionist explained that the consultant who deals with MRI results is working elsewhere today and therefore won't be able to contact me until tomorrow. She also said the results aren't on the computer which means he may not have even seen them. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

WEll done for calling Arabica - at least, if there was a hold-up getting the data onto the computer, the receptionist will chase it up.

I think this is what it's like with consultants.

Hold tight.

What are you going to do today?

Marina · 25/05/2006 10:09

Good for you for phoning though Arabica, can imagine what a tense moment that was. Still thinking of you and hoping for a good, positive outcome for you very soon xxx

Arabica · 25/05/2006 10:15

I am doing some work, then I have a counselling appointment (lucky me, I have a therapist to support me through this although not quite the same as you lot who have Been There/are available 24:7) followed by a routine appt at my local hospital for anti-D jab. During which I will try and visit the lovely midwife who works at the fetal medicine unit and have a moan (if she is in).

OP posts:
Twiglett · 25/05/2006 14:12

well done for calling...sorry there's another wait

Arabica · 25/05/2006 20:11

Feeling OK and positive because heard baby's heartbeat today, loud and clear, and both the midwives I saw were absolutely lovely. I was supposed to have my 30-week check-up with my GP but the midwife I was supposedly seeing just for anti-D did it instead, saying, 'you've seen enough doctors lately!'

Still no news, have phoned again to chase and was reassured that I would get a call back. That was 2hrs ago...

Angry for you, Arabica!

It's so annoying sometimes - the thing is to them you are just one case among many - to you it is the most important thing in the world.
Or that's what it felt like to me.
My fingers are still crossed for you! XX

tamum · 26/05/2006 13:33

I really feel for you Arabica.
xxx

Twiglett · 26/05/2006 13:34

oh Arabica .. that's unfair

can you find the strength to ring back?

bakedpotato · 26/05/2006 13:35

Arabica, I think this is hugely insensitive conduct on the hospital's part. All week you have been strung along (I remember how much you were messed about when waiting for a date for the MRI scan itself, and thought that was pretty awful too). I am shocked.

I can't bear to think of your limbo being extended.

In my experience of the NHS maternity antenatal services, if you kick up a stink, you will get more attention. Is there anyone there you can go back to and explain the situation to -- and demand some help from?

Or does this really go against the grain? (I found it helped to get angry and kept me busy when I couldn't bear to stop and think, but I know not everyone feels this way.)

Blu · 26/05/2006 13:36

Still here and thinking of you. I hate to say this, but Monday is Bank Hol, so I hope they don't leave you hanging on. I'm sure they realise it's so important - but consultants have to deal with all sorts, often in a hurry.

Arabica · 26/05/2006 13:41

Yes am angry about it, very much so, even a call to explain why I haven't got any news would be greatly appreciated!
If I haven't heard by 3pm I will call again, I have work to do which is going to keep me busy on the phone until then.

OP posts:
Arabica · 26/05/2006 13:41

Although I will have an ear out for the mobile whilst I am doing it!

Blu · 26/05/2006 13:42

Is the consultant at Kings where you had the scan or at your own hospital?
