Trying to conceive but need to come off the pill

Hi I'm new to mumsnet, and just after some help and advice regarding the above subject.

I've been on various oral contraceptives for nearly 5 years, and me husband and I have spoken about wanting to now try for a baby. For the last at least 2 years I've been in Cerazette. I've read some bad reviews about it, but I can't say I've had many bad side effects!

Anyway, just after some useful advice as to what is best to do with coming off the pill? Any handy tips, or if people could give me an idea on how long it took them to conceive after coming off the pill.

Thanks ladies!

Stop pill. Start shagging ASAP. I got pregnant first time first cycle off the pill.

MrsBigBadBeck · 02/03/2013 12:37

How long had you been on the pill and which one were you on?

Purplemonster · 02/03/2013 12:42

What Bonzo said! I was on microgynon for a couple of years and got pregnant as soon as I stopped taking it.

2kidsintow · 02/03/2013 12:45

Start taking folic acid. (I always started taking Folic acid a month or two before stopping the pill, just in case I did catch straight away - and I did. I got pg each time after one or two months of trying)

Stop taking the pill.
Bingo.

Longdistance · 02/03/2013 12:46

I was on Microgynon for 12 years, and got pg with dd1 after 7 months. They usually say a month for each year, so you can guess my jaw dropped when I found out I was pg sooner than expected. It can be quicker like pp's have said.

Good Luck Wink

I was on microgynon for 9 years. stopped in July. used condoms until Nov due to going on honeymoon in Cuba and needing jabs etc so not safe to conceive. had one period then fell preg at Xmas. now I'm nearly 12 weeks Smile Make sure u dtd every 2-3 days to give u the best chance of catching your ovulation. sperm can live inside u for up to 5 days and your cycles will be crazy for a few months. good luck!

on ovranette for 14 years, stopped but used condoms for about 6 months trying to get cycle normal gave up on that ! pregnant 3 months later without really 'trying' Wink

I was on cerazette and stopped taking it but left it a couple of months before TTC because I'd had no periods whilst taking it (suited me fine!). It was just to work out when I was ovulating and so I could get an accurate date - it took us two months to conceive but I think I'm very fertile! I never went back on after DS. Now 38 weeks with DD and it also took two months this time.

worsestershiresauce · 02/03/2013 13:48

On microgynon for more years than I care to count. Pregnant first month off. I really wasn't expecting it to be so fast, so didn't bother testing until I was actually 8 weeks gone. Nearly fell off my chair!

If I could go back in time I would be sensible and start folic acid/pre-natal vitamins before I came of the pill.

AmayaBuzzbee · 02/03/2013 14:15

Was on ovranette/ microgynon 15 yrs non-stop. Got pregnant with DD in 4 months (first month I started paying attention to DTD at the right time) at the age of 35, and with DC2 in 3 months (again first cycle I paid attention to when I ovulated etc) at the age of 37. I was on microgynon in between the pregnancies, and did start eating pregnancy vitamins 1-2 months prior to dropping pills both times.

SuckingDiesel · 02/03/2013 14:20

I was on Cerazette for years (and Depo Provera injections for 10 years before that). Stopped taking it end of June 2011. Baby born (2 weeks overdue) at end of June 2012 :)

SuckingDiesel · 02/03/2013 14:21

Sorry.. that shoud say that I was on Cerazette for 2 years.

MrsBigBadBeck · 02/03/2013 14:36

By the seems of things most mums to be are conceiving within months. I'm only just 23 so hoping that'll be in my favour too. Started Folic acid 2 weeks ago too:)

I also got pregnant the first month off the pill. Twice.

Do not assume it will take ages for your fertility to return - it may be straightaway.

SuckingDiesel · 02/03/2013 14:38

I was an old bird at 35 when I conceived so the odds are very much in your favour. Good luck :)

TimothyClaypoleLover · 02/03/2013 14:46

I was on microgynon and cileste for 15 years and got pregnant first month off for first child (aged 34) and second month off for second child (aged 36). Had been told it could take up to a year to get pill out of my system. Obviously not!

Although I do know friends who been on pill for long time and it took a year to get pregnant. I guess everyone is different.

cakesonatrain · 02/03/2013 15:27

Had been on pill for about 7 years, Cerazette for the last 4. Took last one in the April, pregnant in the November, but I think I'd been estimating ovulation a few days too late for a few months.

MrsBigBadBeck · 02/03/2013 15:38

Well me and hubby have decided if I don't fall pregnant by June then we'll wait until next year. We work seasonally so don't really want to be ready to drop between march-October. Shall have everything crossed (apart from my legs haha)

I was on the pill for 21 years. Got pregnant first month after I came off it. Flabbergasted is not the word. So be prepared it could be sooner than you think. Good luck!

Girraferama · 02/03/2013 19:44

I was on mycrogynon for years then cerazzette for 2 years with no periods. I started taking folic acid and came off the pill but waited to TTC until I'd at least had spotting and period pains. I had 2 cycles of v light periods before conceiving.

Good luck!

TheDoctrineOfSciAndNatureClub · 02/03/2013 19:54

Have you just stopped mid-pack? It can be a good idea to have one period (ie finish a pack and have the 7 day break) so if you get PG first month, you know the date of your LMP.

Fairylea · 02/03/2013 20:03

If your periods aren't regular 6 months after stopping the pill ask for your prolactin levels to be checked by a gp (blood test). Prolactin is the same hormone that encourages the production of breast milk and the pill raises this hormone significantly (to make your body think you are already pregnant, even if you don't actually produce breastmilk).

I had exactly this problem and my gp prescribed a drug to reduce the levels of prolactin and whereas I had been trying for 10 months since stopping the pill, when I started taking the drug (dostinex) I fell pregnant in 3 months.

GirlOutNumbered · 02/03/2013 20:12

I was on logynon for 15 years! I got pregnant 8 months after stopping. I got pregnant 8 months with my second too.

AlisonL1981 · 02/03/2013 21:00

I was on microgynon for 10 years. I got pregnant as soon as I stopped taking it.
