Help, gp says she thinks I'm pregnant but I'm scared

Ok, I’m on cd40 today. I feel nauseous, have come out in spots, feel hormonal, tender nipples, but have done two pg tests and they’re negative. So, I went to the gp and she said that she thinks I am probably pregnant and not to take a negative test as not being pregnant because they’re often wrong, very often. She even told me that she didn’t get a bfp with her second pg until she was 11 weeks, even though she “knew” she was pg. She told me to go home and to do another pg test in two weeks and that she’s sure it will be bfp. In fact she said that if it isn’t “I’ll eat my hat”. But I’m scared. Dh, and others on here have said that a gp wouldn’t say something like that unless she was sure, she wouldn’t put her reputation on the line like that, but I’m scared to get excited in case I’m just deluding myself. Please help? Do I dare get excited? Or am I right to be cautious? Just as background we've been ttc since May of last year.

I am surprised she did not offer to do a blood test to send off to check....

I would also be very surprised if she was that sure and willing to say what she did unless she was pretty certain.

Be excitedly cautious - no help I know but I would perhaps wait a week or so as she said and then try again.

Nbg · 28/04/2006 13:06

Gp did this to me.
She sent off a urine sample and said even if it came back negative she would send of another because she was sure I was pg.

hotmama · 28/04/2006 13:08

Sounds positive to me! Smile I had 2 neg tests when expecting dd2 - she is now 11 weeks.

Good luck vibes. Smile

coppertop · 28/04/2006 13:09

I agree with Eidsvold about the blood test. IMO it seems almost cruel to leave you in suspense like this.

Wishing you the very best of luck. xx

ItalianJob · 28/04/2006 13:09

did the GP do any sort of examination of your abdomen/internal? I agree with eidsvold - rather than keep you hanging on for 2 weeks it would have been more sensible for her to do a blood test.
NBG - were you PG then?

eidsvold · 28/04/2006 13:21

i just remembered when I fronted up to the GP in the UK - never needed one before and suddenly found myself pregnant in a 'foreign' country - okay was married and all that but never needed a GP - the GP rather than doing a full medical sort of checked me over and then had a little look and could tell me the mucous plug was in place and I am sure she me to give her a urine sample which she sent off to the hospital for confirmation. Sorry if tmi but just seemed surprised the GP did not do anything that might havbe helped confirm the pregnancy.

Nbg · 28/04/2006 13:23

Yup!
Am 24 weeks now Grin

WigWamBam · 28/04/2006 13:27

I'm surprised that she didn't offer a blood test as well - it would surely have been the obvious thing to do! Can you go back and ask for one, instead of having to wait in limbo for a couple of weeks?

wannaBe1974 · 28/04/2006 14:19

reason she didn't offer to do a blood test was because there are lots of problems with tests taking ages to be processed at our hospital atm, the estimated waiting time for a blood result is two weeks so she said that rather than have to wait for a test to come back in two weeks I might as well do a test in two weeks by which time the hormone should be strong enough to show on a hpt.

2 weeks for a blood test? Eeek!

You realise now of course that we're all going to be waiting in suspense for 2 weeks now too? :o

Nbg · 28/04/2006 14:31

Is that the same for urine tests? Our hospital takes 1 day for those and it can save you alot of money from buying home tests.

wannaBe1974 · 28/04/2006 15:25

Well the question is whether I'll actually be able to wait the two weeks before doing a test or whether I'll crack before then, what are the odds ...

If she's wrong then make sure you take a hat along with you next time you see her...

I am generally something of a believer in a good, really experienced GP being able to tell stuff like that, though, so I'd be cautiously optimistic while still picking out a particularly tasty hat.

Olihan · 28/04/2006 16:16

have you tried doing one of those 'first response' tests that are supposed to be a bit more sensitive than others?

FWIW, my gp told me that the home pregnancy tests are more reliable than the ones they do.......don't know how accurate that is.

Sorry, not sure what CD40 is, does it mean your period's late?

Hope you get the results you want.

jamiesam · 28/04/2006 16:19

I've got a first response you can have for nothing if you want - used at cd 26 (but normally short cycle 25/26 days) to confirm I'm pg, now 14 weeks, hoping I won't ever need it. (last baby Sad and Smile)

ItalianJob · 29/04/2006 10:33

agree with Olihan that the GP urine tests aren't great - boots own brand test came up clear as a bell straight away,GP test 2 days later (with first morning wee! only came up very very faintly).

wannaBe1974 · 30/04/2006 21:24

Thanks for all responses :)

Well I went out and bought a twinpack of clearblue tests today, part of me wants to do one of them in the morning but dh seems to think we should wait for the two weeks but it's killing me. Plus I do "feel pregnant", does that make sense? But then I know that if test is bfn I'll be gutted ...

OP posts:
snowleopard · 30/04/2006 21:30

Wannabe, I'd buy a load of different tests and sit there trying them all until I got a positive! I know someone who did 10 tests... I'm not quite that bad but you've got to do something while you're waiting...
Good luck btw

wannaBe1974 · 30/04/2006 21:39

lol sl, we were in boots and I said to dh .. maybe we should buy allll the brands they have and do them until we get a positive. I'm 98% sure I'm pg, I know I've been here before but I've never been this late, not ever, I'm tired, feel sick but only at certain times of the day, am nausious and now boobs are starting to feel more tender as well, and I know it could be my imagination or too much chocolate, but I'm sure I have a tiny bump! not visible obviously but a slight swelling - does that make sense? If I'm not pregnant then I wanna know what the hell all these simptoms are, lol.

skerriesmum · 30/04/2006 21:41

Oh wannabe, just wanted to say how excited I am for you! This has to be it! Imagine if the tests didn't show anything for 11 weeks though... Grin

wannaBe1974 · 30/04/2006 21:50

if that happens I think I might go mad. having said that, I've just watched the house of tiny tearaways and the preview tomorrow showed one of them saying she was told that she would never conceive naturally because she had two systs in her uterus, and turned out she was actually 5 months pg with twins!

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 01/05/2006 10:09

Is there any way you couldbe 3 months plus? Pregnancy tests stop working then.

wannaBe1974 · 01/05/2006 11:43

hiya all :)

did another test and bfn, so ... lost heart now.
omg jimjams I don't think I could be 3 months plus tbh. will do another test in two weeks but am not really expecting a bfp now :)

OP posts:
schneebly · 01/05/2006 11:53

hi wannabe - i really hope you do get your bfp soon - I had a friend who got bfn upon bfn over a period of weeks and she eventually went to docs and she was so far along he could feel the baby! I hope your doctor is right! Best wishes. xxx

Fingers crossed, hell everything crossed for you Grin
