Waters gone at 35 weeks

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Waters went at 2.30am - I'm in hospital - been admitted til tomorrow morning but just not really sure what's going to happen now? They are starting me on antibiotics but then will let me go home tomorrow morning which I feel a bit freaked out about!

Ah thank you that's sweet this is dc2 for me and my last one was 11 days overdue so it's all a bit new to me. On my own as well as DH at work so could be a boring day ahead! Hope your pregnancy is going well so far.

My waters went at 35 wks. They made me go in daily for scanning/check of heartbeat etc.

My waters carried on leaking constantly for next few days.

Just try to be really aware of baby and movement.

2 days later after I had a snooze, I became aware that hadn't felt movement in a while, so went in panicking-good job, as DD was in distress. Not to worry you, but ended up with a crash section. All was well though, she came out screaming. Was small for dates, as only 4lbs. Had a NG tube for couple of weeks but breathing well on her own.

I suspect they will probably want to get baby out within the week, to reduce infection risk.

So sounds like your baby will be with you soon :)

My waters went at 35 weeks, as baby was deemed premature (in the UK) I had to stay at hospital and be monitored to ensure baby was ok as if contractions didnt start naturally within 24 hours would have been induced. They did start and I had a little baby boy. Had to stay in hospital for at least 4 days and he was monitored every 4 hours for temperature. Glucose levels and oxygen levels. He was in an incubator for 2 days as his temp was a bit cold but he was fine. After 4 days we came home and now he is a thriving 2 week old.

Thanks for the responses it's just a bit confusing as when I had my ds my waters went first but they would only let me go 24 hours. Obviously this is different as its so early and am on antibiotics but I just would feel odd going away for 2 weeks or so with no waters! Have had a show as well so not sure what to think. I really don't feel ready for this baby yet! Was planning to hire a tens machine and everything!

Could you ask them what their current policy is for waters breaking-they will have one. When I had DD it was 96hours before they would induce, rather than let you go on for days, as I think research has shown that risk of infection to you and your baby increases steadily.

Know what you mean about not being ready! We hadn't finished our NCT classes (DD was our first); TENS machine arrived after she did; and had to hurriedly send DH out for tiny baby stuff (interesting!); plus put everything together!

My waters went at 35 weeks and contractions started an hour later. The hospital kept me in and didn't do anything, just let the labour progress and he was born at 4pm that day (waters went at 1.30am).

My son was small for 35 weeks (4lb 15oz) but he had no breathing problems at all, the only issues that he had were no suck reflex (took 4 days to kick in so had an NG tube until then), he couldn't keep his own temperature up for 6 days so had to stay on a little heated mat in his cot and he also had some jaundice which he went on a billimat to treat. He was allowed to stay on the postnatal ward with me, we only wen't the SCBU for regular heel prick tests to keep an eye on his sugars and billi levels. We went home when he was 6 days old.

While you have no contractions rest while you can, make sure friends/family know so if they want to get you anything they can get some prem baby clothes because under 6lb and newborn will absolutely swamp them. And make sure you have enough supplies in your hospital bag to last for a longer stay than you expected. I ran out of pads and underwear because I only expected to be in for a day or two.

I know someone who's waters went at 34 weeks with twins and she carried on at home for another 3 weeks.

My waters went with DD1 at 34 weeks, and I had to stay in for a week with monitoring. She was born naturally at 35 weeks, hours before they were going to induce me, and spent a couple of days in Neo Natal, just because she was early. She was 4lb14oz, and has just turned 13.

I'm sure they'll tell you what the policy is, which might be related to how much fluid is left, and how efficient they think your placenta is (though I can't remember how they do that ).

Interesting mix of responses - it seems to depend on the hospital and/or individual situation then? I think they said that if labour doesn't start by the morning that they will send me home but I will probably be induced at 37/38 weeks - still feels like a long time to wait! Glad everyone whose little ones came early are doing well

At 35weeks, your baby will be just slightly early, and mostly formed and ready for life outside. Relax and don't worry too much. Giving you a un-mn hug.

DS was born at 35+5 and was fine after a short stint in NICU. I would see if you can get a tour of NICU just in case, it's a bit overwhelming in there. Though be assured, at 35 weeks your baby will be one of the bigger and stronger ones there.

Good advice too to keep close attention on baby's movements and go in immediately if any concerns. If your leaking waters become bloody or discoloured go in immediately too.

Born this early your baby will probably need tiny baby clothes (a bit smaller than newborn size) which you can get at mothercare, John Lewis etc, and size 0 nappies. Don't rush out to get them though. You might not need them but you do need to rest. If you need them send someone out with a list or order them online.

Mine were born at 35+5 and 35+6, both fine and stayed on ward with me. We just had to stay for 2-3 days to monitor their temps and blood sugar levels. I agree that mothercare tiny baby clothes were a good fit, also tesco do 5lb baby clothes which were pretty good depending on your budget, baby will only be in them for 2-3 weeks anyway.

Good luck whenever your LO arrives, you will most likely go into labour before they induce you tbh.

Hi everyone and thank you for the reassurance bonzo and seven - glad to hear your babies were ok born at that stage
Well I'm still on antenatal ward - had a big gush of waters in the night so they think I might need another scan to assess the levels of fluid as the one yesterday was fine but that will probably have changed. Also my blood test showed an infection marker so they may want to repeat that and then it's up to the doctor whether they induce me now or at 37 weeks (which is only in a week and a half). Have had some mild contractions show up on the monitor but very irregular and can't really feel them so it looks unlikely I will labour naturally.
A bit scared as I really didn't want to be induced

Good they're monitoring you. My waters went at 35wks but i didn't know untill 36wks (on holiday swimming etc). At 36 wks i felt reduced movements. They kept me in and delivered her the next day. She needed antibiotics but was fine after that.

Just really monitor movement and signs of an infection. I'd be surprised if they semt you home now. It's really not too early. Good luck!

Nice to hear all these positive stories and glad everything was ok for you mumnosbest.
I am being kept in until tomorrow to see if I labour naturally and if not they will send me home late morning. Induction is booked for the 12th if nothing happens before then.
Do you think I should be getting DH to get some small clothes? My ds was 7lb 5oz and most if the vests and babygros were his. My last growth scan showed that he had a big head and estimated weight was 5lb 7oz.
Don't want to go buying stuff that will be wasted iyswim?

My dd was 6lb8 at 36 wks so we got early baby and up to 7lb clothes. It wouldn't hurt to have a couple of bits ready. Just keep most packaged with receipts in case you don't need them. Failing that just roll sleeves or legs up. Babies grow so fast your ds clothes will fit before you know it. Good luck :)

DD was 5lb 4oz at 35+6, she was pretty much in newborn straight away but only because she was 98th percentile for length even though she was really skinny. Had she been nearer average she would definitely have been in early/tiny baby size.

Just wishing you luck. Had preterm labour last week and on bed rest now (33 weeks) so slightly know the worrying / waiting.

Hello just checking back in - still no sign of baby and that's been 5 days since my waters went.

MIL got some small baby clothes but sort of want to see what size it is first so hanging off on washing them just yet!

SayCool - not sure if you're still following the thread but thanks for the luck and sorry to hear you started labour so early. Was it contractions or waters? What is their plan for you? Best of luck with it all anyway .

I've definitely had more gushes of my waters - increasing by the day and have had a few period like pains, but nothing regular.

Really hoping that the baby decides to appear of it's own accord rather than having to be induced.

Hi just wanted to add another positive 35-weeker story. My wee boy put in an appearance at 35+5 weeks. He was 6lb 8oz, did not need to go to SCBU and started feeding straight away. He had a little bit of jaundice but that's all. We were kept in for 5 days but only because that was the hospital policy for prem babies. He is now a strapping 3 year old.

A friend of mine had her waters break at 31 weeks, and with care from the consultant-led unit she got to 34 weeks before delivery. She and her daughter were fine and she caught up developmentally quickly. IIRC the biggest concern the hospital had was infection, so she was a mixture of at home or in hospital for the intervening weeks, certainly off work anyway.
