Boy/ girl - Genital nub theory?!?

chubbychipmonk · 28/09/2012 18:21

Has anyone heard of this? Had my 12 week scan a few weeks ago, showed it to a woman at my work & she started screaming excitedly that I'm having a girl due to the position of genital nub?
I googled it and apparently the nub (white glowing thing between legs) lies horizontally if it's going to develop into a clitoris and become a girl (obv!) or point upwards at an angle of more than 30 degrees if it's going to develop into a penis?
I already have a boy so was beside myself with excitement at the thought I was having a girl till I came back to earth and realised its prob a lot of nonsense. Any one else heard of this or driving themselves crazy reading upon Chinese gender charts, heart rate theories, skull shape theories????

Not heard of this but in my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies, when I had my 12 week scans I could clearly see a penis albeit a teeny one!

I think if I couldnt see one or at least something that looked penis like id assume I was having a girl.

That said, everyone is different!

panicnotanymore · 28/09/2012 19:07

Yes, it's a valid theory, and I was told that I was having a girl (70% accuracy) at my 12 week scan.

terilou87 · 28/09/2012 19:09

hi i can tell you iv tried this on all of my scans (12 week) and that was 4. it was right twice but wrong the other 2 times which would add up seems theres 50/50 chance it can be either. the sonographer said she can move the "nub" dependent on where she puts the doppler so it isnt accurate it just depends on the angle you were scanned at. i was a bit mad on the nub theoryand the old wifes tales gender tests you can do. iv found them to be more accurate they got all 4 genders correct. fingers crossed for you it is a girl tho seems you want one Smile

AmberLeaf · 28/09/2012 19:52

That chinese gender chart thingy is strange though eh?

I had a retrospective look at my pregnancies and it was correct with all of them.

terilou87 · 28/09/2012 20:19

i just did the chinese gender thing and its wrong, well i hope it is. if it isnt i waisted a load of money on baby boy clothes Smile

BuntyCollocks · 28/09/2012 20:25

It's really accurate, especially closer to the 13 week mark. I only had a good nub shot on this pregnancy, and it was obviously girly.

Pontouf · 29/09/2012 07:53

I looked at the Chinese gender thingy and it says this one is a girl. But then I checked and it said my DS was a girl too Confused

efffy · 29/09/2012 17:59

Yep, my recent 13w girly nub did indeed turn out to be dd2 Grin

LimeLeafLizard · 29/09/2012 18:46

Hmm, hate to be a party pooper, but whilst this theory is valid, it is not supposed to be more than 70% accurate. I was told 'girl' with DS2 and then again DS3 at 12 weeks, but each time by 20 weeks it was very obvious that they were boys!

Due to scepticism I didn't ask at 12 weeks this time, waited until 20 weeks, and guess what, this time it is a girl!

LimeLeafLizard · 29/09/2012 18:47

There are several different versions of the Chinese gender thingy online, which give different results!

The last one I tried predicted my last 3 children incorrectly and in fact has me down as a man so something has gone wrong somewhere!

chubbychipmonk · 30/09/2012 07:58

Lol limeleaf!! Grin

My cousin who is a gynaecologist explained this to my recently. Apparently it is indeed the case but some sonographers can get it wrong in early days.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 30/09/2012 08:09

Nub been correct with me when it has been visable.

Correct for a few other mums I know too.

chubbychipmonk · 30/09/2012 21:38

Guess time will tell if its right or not!Smile

sweetkitty · 30/09/2012 21:45

Nub was definitely correct last time for me, it just looked like a teeny penis. Didn't know about the nub theory the other times.

All pregnancies were identical so no giveaway there, Chinese calendar was right 2 out of 4.

ErmahgerdPerngwens · 30/09/2012 21:46

We didn't find out what we were having, after DS1 was born some friends of ours said they hadn't wanted to say, but knew we were having a boy as they'd seen a penis on our scan photo. Which, on closer inspection, turned out to be the umbilical cord. Grin

It might be possible to tell from the nub but I doubt it's hugely accurate, particularly for people who haven't trained as sonographers!

SoozleQ · 30/09/2012 23:50

I concluded DD was a girl from the 12 week scan picture using that theory and was (obviously) correct. Annoyingly, the cross section of DC2's scan picture doesn't show the nub so I can't use the same method this time but I do believe it works Smile

phoenixrose314 · 01/10/2012 05:55

Oh god, I wish I hadn't seen this. Had no idea about this theory, but just dug out my 12 wk scan pics and by the look of what I am assuming is the nub, it's a girl... which is what I was hoping for... but up until now I have had a strong feeling it was a boy. I had accepted it, but now my hopes are up high again!!

Damn, damn, damn. It'd be okay if we were finding out sex but hubby wants it to be a surprise, so got 22 more weeks of waiting til we find out.... :(

MammaMia73 · 01/10/2012 11:27

LimeLeafLizard, same thing happened to me. I had what everyone said, a clear girl nub at almost 13 weeks with baby no 3 ( I have two boys already) then now at the 20 week scan were told boy. I was soooo sure it was going to be a girl and I forgot to check the "boy parts" but I guess they are pretty sure these days...almost want to do another scan just to have it confirmed! We are really happy for another boy, but its more that i want to know if i should go ahead and buy more blue!!;)

LimeLeafLizard · 01/10/2012 12:15

Mamma I understand your frustration! And desire to have another scan just to check... (my DH has already said no!)

chubbychipmonk · 04/10/2012 14:06

My DH doesn't want to find out the sex either. . So 5 months of driving myself crazy trying to guess!!

A colleague of mine was adamant my 12 week scan showed a boy due to the nub theory.....

.....I'm 31 weeks pg with my DC2 aka my DS1.

Grin
panicnotanymore · 04/10/2012 15:57

My 20 week scan has just confirmed what I was told at 12 weeks - a girl. Looks like the nub theory held true in my case.

tamster83 · 04/10/2012 16:15

im really wanting a girl and never herd of this iether but just inspected my 12wk scan pic and well i dont think mine has a nub lol so guess ill have to wait ans see ,,,,,,,,,,,, while ignoreing the fact that im sure i seen a lil pee pee on the 12wk scan!
crossing fingers and toes and thinking pink thoughtssssss

Dogsmom · 04/10/2012 17:59

Here's a link explaining the differences on scans baby2see.com/gender/external_genitals.html

I was really hoping for a girl and spent ages googling for comparison pictures and information, there's also the skull theory that archaeologists use to help determine gender, girls have flatter foreheads and pointier chins and boys have more sloping/rounded heads.

After looking at lots of sites and comparing my scan photo I thought she was a girl and had it confirmed at a gender scan Smile
