Poor thing, in the same boat... 5 ml lactulose. 2 x a day will help, tons of water to drink, eat fruit and veg and ditch as much bread and pasta and switch to brown rice. All the best!

Squeegle · 09/09/2012 21:56

You need something like lactulose, I'm sure that's available without prescription. Sorry you're so uncomfortable , I remember how awful it can be.

Squeegle · 09/09/2012 21:57

Also weetabix!

crackcrackcrak · 09/09/2012 21:57

Lactulose? I'd it in milk? I drink gallons of milk Sad

Bucket of grapes and strawberries and a couple of packets of sugar-free polos!

AgnesBligg · 09/09/2012 21:59

My sympathies had had the same problem last trimester for both of my pgs.

what are you taking for it? Go to your gp there's loads thaat can be prescribed or bought over the counter aat the chemist. The doc might well offer you suppositeries sp? to start you off.

numbertaker · 09/09/2012 21:59

eeek...so nasty. I remember it well, I had piles too. Nice.

Joke: What did the maths teacher who had constipation do; he worked it out with a pencil. ha ha.

Water Water Water. Figs Figs Figs.

Squeegle · 09/09/2012 22:01

Lactulose is a kind if medicine. I was prescribed it I think.

crackcrackcrak · 09/09/2012 22:02

Just drank as much water as I can stomach - about a pint. Can't get anything as alone with dd. got noting listed here at home.

Lactulose. If you are on iron tablets switch to spa tone, much easier to digest.

crackcrackcrak · 09/09/2012 22:07

I only take spa tone. What's that thing you can do for babies with sugar and water?

i suffer terrible too. i am 35 weeks and its that bad that my gp prescribed me some movicol. its worked wonders for me after about 3 days. I eat lots of fruit and veg and only have brown pasta and bread sometimes its just one of those things. but go see your gp and good luck constipation and heavily pregnant sucks!

thebeesnees79 · 09/09/2012 22:09

brown sugar in water? not sure that would work if your backed up though x

AgnesBligg · 09/09/2012 22:09

orange juice with a teaspoon of sugar, is the same as lactulose apparently. Works very well.

Sossiges · 09/09/2012 22:15

Tomorrow get some magnesium supplement capsules, take a couple, will do the trick even if you're backed up and at the working it out with a pencil stage. So much naicer than suppositories. Lactulose can make you very farty and takes a couple of days to work. Lots of people on here swear by Movicol, never tried it, the magnesium has never failed me yet. Good luck

RichmondNCT · 09/09/2012 22:16

I hear you..! Lots of water regularly and often. Are you taking iron supplements? They can make you constipated but dairy also inhibits take up of iron so you may want to discuss that with your midwife if you are drinking "gallons of milk"? She may be able to recommend how best to adjust your diet to meet your iron needs and help with the constipation so you can reduce supplements??

Orange juice is good for constipation and will help iron be absorbed. Avoid too much bran because that can make you more constipated if you aren't getting enough water ye gods I wish someone had told me that about 4 weeks ago :(

Sossiges · 09/09/2012 22:18

Also you can take it every day to keep you going (smaller dose)

crackcrackcrak · 09/09/2012 22:20

What else could I put sugar in? I don't have any fruit juice

RichmondNCT · 09/09/2012 22:21

X-posted. I'm on Spatone too because I was v anaemic but it does do dreadful things to my digestive system. If I wasn't so anaemic already I'd be managing iron levels through diet alone like last pregnancy because it's miserable.

Not that I'm a medic or ought. Just v pregnant!

thebeesnees79 · 10/09/2012 07:43

have you not got any oranges you can squeeze the juice out of?
movicol worked for me but it takes a few days to kick in. no trumps or tummy ache like lactulose

Longdistance · 10/09/2012 07:49

Movicol all the way. Had constipation in both my pg. This cleared things up amazingly.
Lactulose was shit. Pardon the pun.

ladymarian · 10/09/2012 10:43

Try prune juice. It tastes disgusting but it is very effective. I had bad constipation with my first pregnancy and this really worked.

thebeesnees79 · 10/09/2012 10:56

off to take my movicol hahaha

crackcrackcrak · 10/09/2012 19:23

Is movicol prescription only? I will be purchasing prune juice tomorrow. Tried Epsom salts last night it was all I had! Not sure I could swallow it again- prune juice can't be that bad!
