Any pregnant Type 1 diabetics?

Hi,
I'm looking for other pregnant Type 1 diabetics in London, just to have someone to keep in contact with and share advice/horror stories/support each other etc.
I don't actually know anyone at all with Type 1, despite having had it myself since 1989

Good luck spotty. Will be so exciting to have The Date.

Diec are you feeling better today.

I have to say my levels have not been great the last couple of days (not crazy, but quite a few 8, 9, 10s). I think I've slightly let myself go after realising I've not done any structural damage to baby because of diabetes and so I've eased off on the major control. Will need to get back into it today, though, as I'm storing up trouble!

It's so weird - I've had no 'symptoms' of pregnancy at all other than a week or two of tiredness at the beginning! No sickness, nausea, cravings or wish to smell things! Am hoping this bodes well and doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to be struck down in the third trimester! Grin

SpottyTeacakes · 14/11/2012 11:14

No scan today they got it wrong Sad got a date though 13th December. Seems like ages away

BonaDea · 14/11/2012 11:30

Urgh, spotty how ANNOYING!! That's a long time to wait and a LONG time they've got it wrong by, isn't it. Did you at least get a listen to bubs with doppler?

SpottyTeacakes · 14/11/2012 11:33

Sorry 13th is induction date, next scan is in two weeks. Did get to hear heartbeat. I'm just bring grumpy Blush had ++++glucose though Confused

DNS said I hopefully won't need a sliding scale during labour do my levemir as normal and novo rapid if I eat anything so that's good

Mylittlepuds · 14/11/2012 11:44

Spotty that's annoying re scan but I'm taking heart from the fact they said you didn't need a sliding scale. Have the mentioned the induction hormone again?

P.S I have had glucose in my wee every single time I've had it checked! This pregnancy, last pregnancy and when not pregnant. Not sure what this means...but I take it it's not too much of concern as they always just say 'meh, you're diabetic'.

Bona are you feeling better? I had a half sofa day yesterday too as I've just been totally overdoing it. Remember you're preggers, have a LOT of extra stress thanks to the diabetes and you need to take time to look after yourself. X

Mylittlepuds · 14/11/2012 11:45

Also Bona smelling stuff aside I've had next to no 'pregnancy symptoms' either. Freaks me out sometimes.

Mylittlepuds · 14/11/2012 11:48

Can everyone remind me who's got DCs, who hasn't and who's due and when? I'm rubbish! X

I have one DS who is 19 months and this one is due April 25 (without two weeks off for induction).

SpottyTeacakes · 14/11/2012 11:48

Well it was only the specialist midwife I saw a few weeks ago who said I shouldn't need the hormone drip but tbh I will refuse it anyway, unless of course I'm 7/8cm and things are tailing off or something. But I'm not letting them do it as a way of starting things off.

SpottyTeacakes · 14/11/2012 11:51

I have DD who is 27 months so this is DS due 27th December

Mylittlepuds · 14/11/2012 12:01

Spotty are you worried about coping with two close in age? I'm slightly terrified...I've decided just not to think about the logistics.

I think I will refuse it too unless like you say I really need it as things suddenly stop. It recently took a T1 acquaintance four goes with the pessaries to start her off and ended in C Section. I suppose I was 'lucky' last time as things started after second lot last time. I'm hoping cos it's my second it won't be too prolonged...

BonaDea · 14/11/2012 12:09

I sometimes have glucose and sometimes don't. Think the highest I've had is ++. Never had any ketones. spotty do you tend to test before you pee? It would just be interesting to know if your blood glucose is high or whether it reads normally, in which case it is really rather puzzling why your urine readings tend to be high!

I don't have any other DCs, this is my first. Eeeek! Grin

Due date is 3 April, so expect to be induced mid-March-ish.

puds - not sure if it was me who was ill / having a sofa day (although I kind of wish it had been me!). Could it have been someone else? Thanks for thinking of me though!

BonaDea · 14/11/2012 12:18

Gawd, I'd really rather avoid a section if I can. A friend of mine recently ended up with MRSA in the wound and was having to go to the doctor's DAILY for about two months afterwards. Bleugh.

Then again, I have another friend who raves about hers (mind you, she did it naturally with her first baby who sadly died during labour, so I guess I can understand why to her c-section with happy healthy baby at the end might be a a gazillion times better).

SpottyTeacakes · 14/11/2012 12:27

Well dd is starting nursery two mornings a week in jan but yet it's quite scary! Friends say they second is easier though as you know what you're doing and tend to worry less Smile

I'm thinking if I had a ten hour labour at 36 weeks with dd then this one should only be a couple, right?! I'm going to request a couple of sweeps assume ill have pessaries(?) then if need be let them break my waters I think.

Well my level was 8.2 this morning which was a bit high four pluses is quite a bit though!

dieciocho · 14/11/2012 12:44

I'm feeling fine today! Thanks.

My glucose in urine has not been higher than ++, but I have been told that as it takes so long for wee to accumulate etc that urine readings are unlikely to ever match blood readings.

I'm on pregnancy number 1, EDD 31st January

I really do NOT want to be hacked open, thank you very much. One of my best friends had a c-section a couple of years ago and recovery took ages.

dieciocho · 14/11/2012 12:46

Spotty, could you explain the difference between sweeps and ARM, please?

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 14/11/2012 13:03

A sweep is where the mw inserts her finger into the cervix and literally sweeps around it releasing the hormones which can bring on labour. This is why it's not possibly or can be painful if you're not dilated as me can't get her finger in properly. ARM is where they stick the knitting needles in and break your waters Grin once waters have gone contractions are more painful

BonaDea · 14/11/2012 14:03

Bleugh.

RueDeWakening · 14/11/2012 20:50

I have dd who is 5, and surviving triplet DS who is 2, will be 3 in feb, and this one is due around 7th June, expecting section around the start of May half term.

BonaDea · 15/11/2012 09:36

So, all the talk of pizza on this thread made me want one last night. Had been at my fitness class so felt slightly justified, especially as it was quick to pop on at 8.45 when I got in.

I actually bought two of those Pizza Express small ones (2 for £4 in Waitrose!) intending to just have the one, but the first was demolished in an instant and they are very thin crust in my defence Blush

ANYWAY, calculated them as needing 20 units a pop, so shot 40 units of Novo. This is unheard for me pre-pregancy. A really carb-heavy meal for me would be maybe 14 units. ANYWAY, was slightly high before bed at 9.1 so shot two more units... Low and behold woke up in the night convinced I'd be sky high and was 4.8. Nice! Maybe pizza is now my friend?!

dieciocho · 15/11/2012 10:36

40u?! Wow.
Thankfully, my dinner doses remain fairly similar to what they were pre-pregnancy (10g = 1u)
Breakfast has quadrupled and lunch has recently doubled.
I'm trying to keep my total Novorapid dose around 20u per day. So I'm eating a lot of nuts, cheese, eggs, carrots, apples and avocados!

DP has decided to go on a 2-week low carb. diet next week to lose a couple of kilos, so he will, at long last, be supporting me in my eating challenge.
He's not the...best: often complains about the "weird" low-carb. dinner I've made or when he cooks, loads up my plate with about 72 potatoes.

Not working today, so currently doing online Christmas shopping while playing classical music to bump - my mum swears it'll make it brainy!

OP posts:
BonaDea · 15/11/2012 10:46

Yeah, well, my dinner dose has gone up to 10g = 3u, so that's where my calculation got me!

I've had to start eating breakfast. Today I had an - albeit large - apple. 12 units Novo. So, 20 units per day would get me nowhere.

I'm quite fortunate in the DH is really quite good at low carbing and doesn't complain. I know he eats waaay more when he's not with me, but actually he thinks he sleeps better without loads of evening carbs. So, we often just have protein plus veggies for dinner and rarely (honest, gov) have pasta, pizza or loads of potatoes.

Mylittlepuds · 15/11/2012 16:35

Lol at husband moaning about 'weird' low carb dinner. Sounds like my husband who wouldn't touch my food with a barge pole

BonaDea · 16/11/2012 10:00

Thank crunchie it's Friday.

Went to bed at 6. something and woke up at 12.6. Not sure if I hypoed in the night or what but felt grotty when I woke up. Great start to the day.

Am starting to worry about being huge. Went to fitness class yesterday and it is really hard to guage how I compare size-wise to others about my level.

Hmmm, maybe I'm just in a grump today!

Mylittlepuds · 16/11/2012 12:33

Oh Bona that's very annoying! Perhaps it's time to jack up the long acting? I don't know about you but when I've had a hypo whole asleep it only tends to go up by a few mmols. Are they back behaving now?

Last pregnancy my bump was huge as I had that polyhydromnisis (not correct spelling). Hoping I don't get it this time. I know what you mean though about comparing. I'm 17 weeks and convinced my bump is too big and so Googled pics of other women's 17 week bumps! Massive variation.

I've started to try and eat a lot healthier. It is helping but I'm having a lot of hypos. Just sat on the sofa now recovering.
