Any pregnant Type 1 diabetics?

Hi,
I'm looking for other pregnant Type 1 diabetics in London, just to have someone to keep in contact with and share advice/horror stories/support each other etc.
I don't actually know anyone at all with Type 1, despite having had it myself since 1989

Well it can do but in pregnancy it us generally lower because it has further to go, just don't stand up too quick! Think mine's been hovering around 96/60 when not pregnant it's 110/70 and in labour with dd it was 185/152 Shock

RueDeWakening · 09/11/2012 22:06

I should probably be on aspirin only nobody's mentioned it yet and I don't want to remind them I think I have some left over from DD & DS because I didn't take it very often then, either.

Checking whether or not I've taken my bolus is another reason why I love pumps - it gives the basal without me having to do anything (once it's programmed, of course) and I can check my bolus history, either the last given on the general info screen, or go into the specific bolus history menu and see the last dozen or so that I've had. It gets me out of all sorts of trouble, regularly :o

I'm watching sugars this evening, because we had pizza for tea Blush which was lovely at the time but is bound to be a PITA sooner or later.

dieciocho · 11/11/2012 08:10

96/60 *Spotty! Wow.
Since getting pregnant I've consistently been around 60/120, which I believe is perfectly good, and I am on junior aspirin everyday.

Puds, re: 1.5, no, it was a totally normal day; normal breakfast, normal commute, normal students... (I'm a teacher in adult education)

Oh, and I had my end-of-second-trimester diabetic eye appointment thingy on Friday (so tired after hypo at work that I wanted to lie down on the floor and sleep in the middle of the hospital corridor!!!) and doctor said that my eyes look fine, there've been no changes and everything should be fine during labour. Good news!

11.5 two hours after breakfast Angry

Mylittlepuds · 11/11/2012 14:56

Arrggh! Levels high all day. Very (very) tired - toddler not sleeping and up every hour last night and for five nights previous - super stressed with my anxiety and have a cold: so I think that's the reason/s.

Have hovered around 7/8/9/10/11 all day. Tell me not to worry ladies and that all isn't lost x

Mylittlepuds · 11/11/2012 16:34

So I've done some research...who knew sleep affected our levels so much!! Will be very greedy over my sleep from now on. I had no idea. Feel guilty...again.

newbie6 · 11/11/2012 17:53

Hi littlepuds, that's really interesting as I am not sleeping at all and haven't been for the past 5 weeks and yep, you guessed it,my sugars are up. Am so fed up with this, just want baby out safe and well and I honestly don't think I will care what my sugars are for at least a week! Xx

SpottyTeacakes · 11/11/2012 17:56

I've been doing quite well with sleep luckily, that's really interesting though. Puds try not to worry about the odd high days you more than make up for them usually Smile

Mylittlepuds · 11/11/2012 19:50

Thanks ladies. Have had a bit of a revelation today. I really need to look after myself as I've found out for sure that i'm so much more sensitive to things like lack of sleep, hangovers, caffeine - in short they make me feel like utter shit and hike my anxiety up tenfold (which is much more prevalent in diabetics) and really affect my blood sugars. I'm going to have to start being a bit more selfish and put me and my health first.

Newbie I felt exactly the same as you after DS1 arrived. But to be honest as all the pesky hormones come crashing down it becomes to easy to control! It almost felt to me like I didn't have diabetes anymore. And of course there's not that awful guilt you carry around every time you bastard eat summit!

Thanks Spotty Smile

dieciocho · 11/11/2012 20:09

Fascinating Puds, thanks for the link.

I hope you're feeling better.

Hello everyone - hope you all had good weekends.

Rue - how did you get on after your pizza? I can normally manage ok with pizza provided I don't eat it too late - I tend to get good levels after an hour and even at two hours, then get a rise after that. So I ususally have to have some extra bolus later on, which is harder to do if you're fast asleep obviously. But a life without pizza occasionally would be no life really, right? Grin

I spent quite a lot of my weekend baking, weirdly. Not a great hobby for a diabetic I know! But I'm finding that without losing my Saturday and /or Sunday mornings to a hangover or at least feeling fuzzy, I'm up and about and wanting to do things at home. Brought in all but two of my apple and cinnamon muffins to work today so the others can scoff them.

There are quite a lot of recipes online using ground almonds as a low-carb substitute to flour and artificial sweetner and things like vanilla extract instead of sugar. So, am going to try experimenting a bit more with low carb / low sugar baking in due course.

RueDeWakening · 12/11/2012 17:43

Bona amazingly well all things considered Smile fortunately we eat with the kids at about 5.30pm usually so I have a good few hours to keep an eye on levels before bedtime! Pizza is one of the (many) reasons I love my pump, as it has something called a dual wave bolus. It lets me dial up how much bolus I need, then split it into some to be given now, and some over the following x hours (pizza I normally set to 5 hours, though I know some people have it set for 8 hours). Was slightly high before bed but still single figures, so corrected that and was 6.1 the next morning Grin

Mylittlepuds · 12/11/2012 17:55

What is it with bloody pizza?! I had some the other night - was great for two hours thinking 'way hey!' I've gotten away with it and then climbed and climbed before bed.

RueDeWakening · 12/11/2012 21:54

I was told because pizza is refined carbs but really fatty (all that cheese, nom nom) it actually gets digested really slowly. If I give a normal bolus with pizza then I'm normally hypo before the pizza kicks in Confused, there's generally hardly any impact on 2-hrs post meal readings but then about 4am they can be sky high!

There was a really interesting thread ages ago over on the Diabetes Support forums with people all eating the same food on the same night, and reporting their blood test results along with what carbs they ate and what bolus they gave. Was very interesting, and how we worked out how long pizza sticks around for!

Mylittlepuds · 12/11/2012 22:02

Rue that's so interesting!! You see I'd be tempted to treat the pre-pizza kicking in hypo aggressively thinking I'd given myself too much insulin as it's a food I'm unfamiliar with.

Are there any other foods like that? Actually come to think of it there's this really cheesy meatball pasta thing DH very occasionally gets from M&S and I can never work out why everything seems okay after 2 hours and then it hikes and hikes. Same with very cheesy cheese on toast. Ahh explains a lot! Thanks.

Tis a fountain of diabetic knowledge this thread!

dieciocho · 13/11/2012 07:55

And it happens to me with fish and chips - blood's fine after and hour or so, slightly higher after two, then stupid in the middle of the night.

It's the unfamiliar food/infrequently eaten problem for me; I much prefer stuff I've been eating regularly all my life - toast, fruit, yoghurt, soup, cereal, salad...

dieciocho · 13/11/2012 09:47

BTW, do we need to start a new thread soon? I understand there is a length limit.
Does anyone know what the limit is/want to start a new thread/know how to post a link to a new thread?

We do need to keep our little network going for a number of months more: Rue has got ages left to go and I for one would like to remain in touch for support as a diabetic new parent (breastfeeding, hypo-free weight loss etc).

Re pizza - yep, it's the fatal mixture of LOTS of carbs and LOTS of fat. Fat slows the absorption of carboyhydrate / takes longer to digest, so the effects go on and on. You'll find the same effect with things like curry (lots of fat usually, accompanied by lots of rice / naan), fish and chips as mentioned above and pasta if served with a creamy or cheesy sauce. In other words, many of the most deliciious things in life!

However, it can come in quite useful this 'fat slowing things down' thing. If I ate all the white bread in a pizza on its own without the cheese and other fatty topppings, I would definitely be high within an hour. REALLY high. THe fact that the fat slows things down is confusing but when you work that out,. it actually buys you more time to get your insulin right and you avoid 'spikes' which are not our friend. Again, there is lots of interesting reading on this topic in 'Think LIke a Pancreas'.

New thread: I think we will need one eventually. Is the limit 800 posts perhaps?

SpottyTeacakes · 13/11/2012 10:29

1000 posts per thread. Grin

I have a weird thing going on..... I think I'm a bit addicted to smelling bleach and chemical things. With dd it was nice shampoo etc but this time it's toilet cleaner Hmm

Mylittlepuds · 13/11/2012 11:41

I'm really glad the fatty food thing's been cleared up for me as I was very vague about it. So is it quite safe to give yourself more insulin two hours after or do you wait for it to start rising to take action?

Aw we must have a new thread. I'm onto DC2 and have found it so supportive and it's got me through a few upsets that 'normal' people don't understand.

Spotty so weird you mention that! I didn't have the smelling stuff thing with DS1 but with this baby I've started keeping a couple of Lush smelly body washes next to the bed to sniff. Strange as I'm not into 'smelliest' at all and they've been kicking around as unwanted gifts.

Mylittlepuds · 13/11/2012 11:42

Smellies not smelliest!

dieciocho · 13/11/2012 15:29

Aargh, can't get my blood down. 3 hours after lunch (oatcakes, egg mayonnaise, an apple) it's risen from 8.2, to 9.7 and now to 11
WTF?
I feel crap and want to curl up in bed.

OP posts:
Mylittlepuds · 13/11/2012 16:03

Oh Diec - so frustrating. Not too bad levels wise but I do hate it when your they seemingly have a mind of their own. Do you think you might be a bit poorly?

dieciocho · 13/11/2012 16:46

I don't feel great Puds, but I haven't done for the past couple of months - I suppose I'm run-down.
I feel emotionally unwell today, actually. It's just been one of those days when I've not wanted to do anything, go anywhere, talk to anyone...

Good news, blood is now 5.8

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 14/11/2012 07:34

Woken up with 8.2 think I might have gone low in the night. Morning sickness is making an appearance again too, just nausea.

Got another scan today and booking induction date ill let you all now how it goes Smile
