Any pregnant Type 1 diabetics?

Hi,
I'm looking for other pregnant Type 1 diabetics in London, just to have someone to keep in contact with and share advice/horror stories/support each other etc.
I don't actually know anyone at all with Type 1, despite having had it myself since 1989

Hoping I think you've got it right to be honest - better to be on the low side. I was last pregnancy but have lost all my confidence with being low.

No risk at all Newbie Smile I had the same worries last time.

Newbie was going to say same as puds i was told with my 1st needle is nowhere near big enough to reach baby, the only thing ive been advised this time round is to inject my background insulin (levemir i was changed to at 12 weeks) in to my bum as it asorbs slower from there? Seems to be working tho getting harder to reach lol

Puds would u beleive i ate a chicken curry and fried rice then a cpl squares of the diabetic choc my parents got me ( they feel sorry me craving choc lol) n at 10pm 3.9 what the hell? Waiting to test again n make sure its up a bit before i go to bed but can see a 3am high coming :(

Bloody hell I'm jealous! I'm having the opposite problem! I think you might just need to cut back by literally 0.2u or something and you could have it cracked...(for now). Do you have a half unit pen? Very handy. I need them as am so sensitive to changes.

Hi all - have been away for a week but back now. How's everyone doing? Have we had an update about baby Felix?

hoping - hello! I see you've joined our merry little gang. Haven't read back yet to see your back story, but thought I'd give you some advice about so-called 'diabetic chocolate'.

It is completely pointless. As you probably know by now, diabetes is NOT about sugar, it is about carbohydrate in all its forms which includes sugar, but also most starchy foods like potatoes, pastas and rice. These diabetic chocolates and sweets may use some sort of sugar substitute but they are very rarely low-carb. In fact, many of them use 'fruit sugars' which are just as carb-laden as regular sugar.

So, my point is, you should have some chocolate when you feel like it, but don't let yourself or your parents be ripped off into buying these crappy substitutes. They taste crap and will have about the same effect on your blood glucose levels. Just be sure that you are counting the carbs in the proper chocolate you are going to eat, take the appropriate amount of insulin and enjoy.

Hi bona

Id thought as much about the choc, they were just being nice to me lol i have seen only 1 website that offers sugar free low carb snacks some of which are choc these bars have 10g carbs thinking thats good tho they r expensive! I had been having some choc with my main meal and my bg was reasonable does this mean i wasnt doing any harm to myslef??

Report
BonaDea · 17/12/2012 17:05

Yep, eating after your main meal is probably the least painful way to go about it and if your BGs stay good you won't do any harm!

As long as you hits those targets Hoping eat what on earth you like! A former colleague is an old school diabetic and just could no get his head around me eating bars of chocolate (not saying you're like this Hoping but it's just reminded me). He just couldn't grasp carb counting and from when he was diagnosed he'd eaten more if less the same three meals for EVERY DAY of his life. When I'd waltz in Twirl in hand he must have thought I was totally lying about my hba1c which was in the 5s and his were always 7s. Anyhow he's going on a DAFNE course Smile. Imagine how nice it's going to be for him eating different things!

Been anywhere nice Bona? I thought you'd gotten sick of me moaning - ha! My back is hurting too on on off. Lower back it is. Was in a panic the other day thinking it was premature labour pains Blush

lol no no1 has ever said you cant have just that you have to cover it with insulin but the dsn i spoke to after my eye thing (who is a bit older) seemed dissaproving when i said i was low all the time and thought it was because id cut out whatever sweet thing i had- not always chocolate myb a yoghurt and now n again shock horror a cake or pudding if out somewhere but was almost always on target by next test(my consultant doesnt ask for the 2 hour post meal) so just had chicken n veg in black bean sauce with noodles took 15u as had lots n lots of noodles just ovet an hour later bam 2.4 :( had some jelly babies so hopefullu itl come up soon xx

Puds I'm old school too - or at least I was, I was brung up on having to eat 23 "exchanges" a day (1 exchange = 10g carbs). There was noflexibility, no adjusting doses, and no such thing as correction doses either! How times change :o

Mind you the MW at my joint DSN/MW appt last time I was PG nearly had a heart attack when she read my diary - I faithfully recorded the fact that I'd had 2 Cadbury's Creme Eggs for dinner the night before... :o and very nice they were too!

So how long since diagnosis then, ladies? I'm 28 years and counting, things have changed a bit in that time (and mostly for the better)!

Hi rue

I was diagnosed at 17 so just over 12 years officially but now looking back both me and my parents believe i was born with it to a lesser degree, i have never lived down the fact i cried for 8 hours solid as a baby and used to drink bottles of water between feeds, i then got very bad food poisoning as a child then started to put on weight hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Mylittlepuds · 17/12/2012 22:25

Rue that actually sounds less stressful than the 'new' way!

Gosh 28 years. I'm a diabetic baby then. Was diagnosed at 28 and I'm 31 now. Were there any theories touted as to why you developed it Rue? What about you other ladies? I have no idea but my mum seems to remember me having a virus around the time of diagnosis. There is also a lot of auto immune disorders in my family.

Has anyone got any weird skin things? In the last year I've developed what my diabetes consultant says is granuola annulare - which I've probably totally misspelled. It's s weird red patch on my foot.

Spotty that's really interesting as we have lupus, under active thyroid and cystic fibrosis in ours! Maybe that is the reason....

My sister has an under active thyroid, and my mum has developed one in the last year or so, too. I had wondered if it was all related, since its all autoimmune.
