Any pregnant Type 1 diabetics?

Hi,
I'm looking for other pregnant Type 1 diabetics in London, just to have someone to keep in contact with and share advice/horror stories/support each other etc.
I don't actually know anyone at all with Type 1, despite having had it myself since 1989

Newborn for ten weeks and size one nappies for 12 weeks Grin she's now on 7th centile for height and 20 something for weight, she's a tiddler!

dieciocho · 07/11/2012 15:43

Yes, I was wondering about the need for teeny-weeny clothes - my oh-so-supportive sister keeps saying we won't need them as our baby will be so fat!

I've got a few bits and bobs from friends, but I haven't spent any money myself on anything below 3 months.

Yeah, today's sonographer made us feel naughty for asking anything at all! She snapped at my DP when he asked her to repeat something (she had a strong accent.) She also refused us photos even though the sign says you can have photos up to 30 weeks.

BonaDea · 07/11/2012 15:54

SHE REFUSED YOU PHOTOS???? That is really horrible, and possibly worth a word to someone! Everyone these days expects and wants photos, it's not like you were asking for something unreasonable. You poor thing, it sounds like a less-than-perfect experience, I must say!

I haven't bought anything yet, but (unbeknownst to Mr Bona) I think I'll be going to buy a few bits at the weekend asssuming all is ok tomorrow and Friday Grin.

I always buy people 0-3 or 3-6 months clothes rather than newborn, but my friend told me the other day that I'm not alone in that and actually they were quite short on things for their newborn as they'd expected tiny stuff as presents and didn't get much for that age, only older.

diec - what else have you bought? Do you have pushchair and cot? Is anyone else thinking of co-sleeping (I am thinking of it!).

SpottyTeacakes · 07/11/2012 16:05

Bona I wasn't sure co sleeping was advised due to hypo risks? (I have no idea if that's true)

diec hopefully your next scan will be with someone different and you can explain what happened and they might give you a photo.

I've got a good pile of newborn stuff it really is hard until you know the shape of your baby, my niece was only 7lb but get legs were too long for most newborn grows, yet like I said dd was 8lb and in them for a while. I've also got everything I need including new pushchair Grin, except a couple of swaddle blankets and cream for post pushing piles Grin

BonaDea · 07/11/2012 16:20

Hmm, never considered the hypo risk, I have to admit. Had been thinking of co-sleeper cot as an alternative, so perhaps that would be safest.

Post pushing piles? I really wish people wouldn't tell me this stuff in advance Sad!!

SpottyTeacakes · 07/11/2012 16:29

Not everyone gets them but I wish I'd had cream in advance last time rather than having to ask dp to go and get it for me Blush

I think the side car cots are a really good compromise Smile

BonaDea · 07/11/2012 17:13

Teehee - well, I guess better to be warned than not!

Yeah, side car cot is DH's preference anyway, as he is paranoid about us crushing bubs, so all things considered it might be the best way forward. Also might (I hope) make the transition from our bed to its own cot bed easier in the long run.

Mylittlepuds · 07/11/2012 17:39

Yay so there's a baby there! Thank God for that. ++Ketones though, and sugar in wee...never mind. I think the ketones were because I had no carbs for lunch and sugar in wee? Well come on...I am diabetic.

DS was in newborn stuff :-) not for long but he's always tracked 90s centile wise, height, everything. But me and his dad are giants so I don't think it's diabetes related.

Can't believe you were refused photos Diec! That's just mean!

dieciocho · 08/11/2012 07:29

Well, at least she showed us the pumping heart and moving diaphragm in detail..

Most of the stuff we have now has been donated/lent by generous friends and family members - money's horribly tight right now as I lost my job a couple of months ago and have only been able to find 2 days a week of work since then.
We've been given a moses basket, 2 black bin bags full of clothes (0-12), a walker, a bouncy chair, a steriliser, a vintage wooden highchair, a baby bath, a Swiss ball (?) and some old washable nappies.
We've been lent a baby gym, a sling and a full bottle kit (for expressed milk).
A woman on MN has even sent me her old pump!

DP's best mate is making us a cot (wow, I know) to which baby will be transferred at about 4 months /when I go back to work.

The pushchair is the only big thing that still remains to be sorted - we've reserved one at Mothercare, but are still going to newly-new sales in the hopes of finding a cheaper one.

Pile cream? Any brand in particular...?

Good luck with 20-week scan Bona.

SpottyTeacakes · 08/11/2012 07:39

puds I always have ketones if its first morning sample but not after what do you think that means?

Pile cream, they're all pretty much the same. Anusol hc is good because it has a hydrocortisone in it too, think that ones a pharmacy only one.

Had a day of highs yesterday (9-15) no idea why? Seems back to normal today?

33 weeks today Smile

Mylittlepuds · 08/11/2012 08:36

I think ketones are actually totally harmless and that health professionals get very confused about them re. diabetics. They mean your body is burning fat instead of food which is why people on the Atkins diet buy ketone sticks to check they the diet is having the right effect!! So I'd imagine you have them first thing as we don't eat through the night.

Ketoacidosis (sp?) is obviously a different ball game. We were all in it to a degree at diagnosis, hence the weight loss. It's sustained lack of energy through food for the body to burn over days and weeks. And you feel very rough.

SpottyTeacakes · 08/11/2012 08:53

That makes sense. My glucose monitor can test ketones through blood but I never really use it Confused

Mylittlepuds · 08/11/2012 12:25

Mine too - and neither do I. I tend to know to test for ketones if I'm feeling very, very thirsty.

BonaDea · 08/11/2012 14:47

Hello ladies!

20 week scan done and all is well with our wriggler. Again the consultant commented on how much s/he was moving around!

He spent ages with us, measured everything and talked us through it all. I know most of you have done it before but I didn't realise HOW detailed it would be. For example, he was able to highlight on screen in two different colours - red and blue - blood going into and being pumped out of the baby's heart. Amazing! Everything measured normally and everything is where it should be - brain, kidneys, hands, feet, stomach (could see it had amniotic fluid inside). Phew.

Tummy was above average size but still in normal range and he basically said not to read anything into that for the time being - as he said about half of babies have tummies above the average size (well, that's what an average is I suppose!). He gave us three lovely photos away.

And: no, we didn't find out the sex Grin

Cardiac scan tomorrow, but given everything seemed fine today, I'm hoping there is nothing to worry about there.

dieciocho · 08/11/2012 15:45

That's great news Bona!

Mylittlepuds · 08/11/2012 15:50

Fantastic news Bona! Phew and double phew. Smile

SpottyTeacakes · 08/11/2012 16:44

Yay! That's great Bona!

dieciocho · 09/11/2012 17:40

Aargh, a 1.5 at work this morning, now feel utterly poo-ey but have a full weekend with a friend visiting from Spain.
Oh dear.

Mylittlepuds · 09/11/2012 18:29

Oh Diec! Had you eaten anything different/taken more insulin?

SpottyTeacakes · 09/11/2012 18:32

Eek that is low! I had a 2.2 this morning and nothing in the house at all so ended up having a spoonful of golden syrup Blush

Mylittlepuds · 09/11/2012 19:01

Spotty! That's naughty! Get yourself to the shops mrs and get some stocks in!

I had that awful thing this morning when I did some gorgeous cheese on toast for brekkie, loaded up my insulin, went to the toilet and thought 'shit - have I taken it or not?!'. I then nervously watched my levels like a hawk for the next hour. I MUST try and get some kind of insulin taking protocol as I get so, so worried if I think may have doubled up. Rightly so really as 1 unit too much at the mo floors me. What do you lot do?

SpottyTeacakes · 09/11/2012 19:21

I just have a routine that I always stick to. That said I can sometimes be driving to work worrying I've forgotten my levemir it is a pain!

I have supplies now I was awaiting the tesco delivery!

Mylittlepuds · 09/11/2012 20:26

Ooh I've got another question. Are you all on aspirin? I'm on it although keep forgetting to take it but I have just been told by MW that I have very low blood pressure. Not sure what to do?

SpottyTeacakes · 09/11/2012 20:28

I'm on it haven't taken it for months I'd keep taking it if I were you as you can never tell when high bp might happen

Mylittlepuds · 09/11/2012 21:03

Thanks Spotty. I take it BP is not like BG that can go too low?!
