I have a DD who is 10 so it's been a while since I received antenatal care Smile

Last time you got an anomaly scan at 12 weeks (nuchal fold measurement) and then another at about 20 weeks when you could find out the sex.

Is this still the same?

I went to the GP last week to ask for a viability scan after suffering a MC in January. I wanted some reassurance that all was well this time but she said unless there had been pain or bleeding I wouldn't get one. Happy to say there's no pain or bleeding and my hCG levels are rising (good old CB digi conception indicator Smile) so I'm not overly worried.

The GP said they do a dating scan between 8 and 12 weeks and she would request mine was done closer to 8 weeks than 12. Is this the scan where the nuchal fold is measured or is it just in case my dates are wrong? Will I get another before 20 weeks?

By going to the GP last week I'm assuming she will have referred me to the midwives and I'll hear from them in due course, does that sound right?

I know it will vary from PCT to PCT but give me an idea of what to expect by telling me what you've had so far.

Here it used to be a dating scan and then an anomoly scan (so one at around 10-12 weeks and one at 18-23 weeks ish). Now they do the nuchal fold scan at the same time as the dating bit so you have it a wee bit later (somewhere around 11-13+6 or thereabouts) and the anomoly scan the same as before.

Here you'd only have a later scan if you had a high risk pregnancy. I had one at 36 weeks with ds because I was planning a vbac and had a couple of risk factors they needed to check on.

How long ago was that SOH?

Its Nuchal scan at 11-13ish weeks and Anomaly scan at 20-22 weeks here. You only get a dating or viability scan earlier if there's a problem. Last time I had a position scan at 34 weeks for breech but again that or growth scans are only if something is amiss.

We get a dating scan at 11-13 weeks, if you want a nuchal fold then that is done at the same time. Then the anomaly scan is done between 19 and 21+6 weeks

Pascha · 06/08/2012 18:15

Mine is this year.

sleepybump · 06/08/2012 18:32

Last year i had one at 9/10wks (thought it was 12ish) and was told to come back at 12-14wks for nuchel-fold test because i was not far enough along for it. I then had one around 20wks. I also had a scan at 33wks after we had a bump in the car.

This year i've had one at 12wks (muuuch better guess work on my part) and have one booked now for 20wks.

I think in scotland you only get the 20 wks one now.

sleepybump · 06/08/2012 18:33

*i mean to say, im in England and beliece its just Scotland that may be different.

PollyIndia · 06/08/2012 18:36

I am pregnant now and had one at 12 weeks, the anomaly one at 20 weeks and I get one at 36 weeks (3 weeks time) as I had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks.

However people I know at UCH hospital seem to get one at 32 weeks as standard, so I think it depends

StiffyByng · 06/08/2012 18:43

I ended up having five scans. Dating/nuchal fold scan at 13 weeks. Anomaly scan at 23 weeks. Quick scan at about 26 weeks because I couldn't feel the baby moving. Growth scan about 30 weeks because of a small measuring bump. Final scan at 40+10 to check placenta.

ShowOfHands · 06/08/2012 18:58

Mine was last year.

MirandaWest · 06/08/2012 19:00

DS is 8 - just had 20 week scan with him (plus extra later ones but that was due to problems with my high blood pressure).
DD us 6 and there was a dating scan at 12 weeks with her plus 20 week scan.

drtachyon · 06/08/2012 19:12

Round here, you get a scan at about 12 weeks (dating scan + measuring nuchal fold), and another at about 20 weeks (anomaly scan) as standard.

You only get more if there's a potential problem - i.e. bleeding, high risk pregnancy, possible breech baby near the due date. I had 10 scans in all because of various problems I had during pregnancy, but that's definitely not normal.

The only people I know who had a viability scan before 12 weeks - without having had pain or bleeding - had had multiple (more than 3 in a row) miscarriages.

whatsoever · 06/08/2012 22:05

I had a private one at 8 weeks because I'd had a MMC previously (no bleeding or pain so couldn't justify asking the EPU for one but couldn't wait); dating scan at 12 weeks (chose not to have nuchal, but that would have been the same time if we'd wanted it) and anomaly scan at 20 weeks. Again, could have found out the sex at 20 weeks but chose not to.

Not expecting any more scans unless there is a problem. I'm in the Manchester area.

stressheaderic · 06/08/2012 22:08

I had 12 week, 20 week, 36 week due to low lying placenta and 39 week just to check placenta had shifted enough. I felt quite lucky to see her so often.

MoragG · 06/08/2012 22:19

sleepybump - in Scotland you also get a 12 week dating scan and a 20 week anomaly scan (if you want it). However, not all areas offer the nuchal fold test.

DeathMetalMum · 07/08/2012 09:26

Last pregnancy I moved PCT's just after half way through. It was standard in both for a 12 week dating scan and a 20 week anomoly scan. I also had a scan quite late on and a visit to the consultant. I imagine this was due to me moving PCT as there were no problems.

ISpyJumpHigh · 07/08/2012 09:38

The standard here is dating at about 12 weeks and anomaly between 18-20 weeks. That was all I had with DS, but have had 2 more with this DC - one at 7 weeks because I had spotting and one yesterday (22+6) because LO was being awkward at 20 week scan and they couldn't check the spine properly.

Anecdotally, it seems to be becoming more common for people to be rebooked for similar reasons - not sure if this because the appoinmtments are shorter (with DS when a similar thing happened they told me to go for a walk to see if he shifted and completed the scan on the same day, whereas this time it was just rebooked straightaway) or if I'm just more aware of it because it's happened to me iyswim.

Sorry for double-post!

minipie · 07/08/2012 11:01

The standard here is 12 weeks ish and 20 weeks ish.

However I had 3 before 12 weeks due to recurrent bleeding. I will also have extra scans to check growth at 28 and 36 weeks since I'm at risk of slow growth. So all in all I expect to have 7 scans!

Oh and I had a private one too ... 8 scans Blush

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 07/08/2012 11:05

Around 12 and 20 weeks here.

LauraPalmer · 07/08/2012 12:17

Same here as most have already mentioned - nuchal/dating scan at 11-13, anomaly scan at 19-21. I was also given two early scans (@ 8 & 10 weeks) because of having had 2 previous miscarriages.

My local hospital is doing a pregnancy outcome prediction study that I've agreed to participate in so will have additional scans at 28 & 36 weeks (with free photos Smile )

So all in all, I'll have a total of 7 scans.

LauraPalmer · 07/08/2012 12:18

Oops, my maths are off - I'll have 6 scans, not 7. pregnancy brain

Kizza2 · 07/08/2012 13:33

I had 10 scans with my DS - more towards the end as he stopped growing at 28 weeks
