This can't just be me, can it?!! Every time I go to the midwife I have to give a urine sample, I always end up peeing on my hand, missing the pot with most of my stream, only getting a tiny trickle into the pot. any tips?! be as explicit with instructions as you like!

No tips I'm afraid, I have the same problem.

brightermornings · 12/07/2012 19:26

I bought a cheap jug for that purpose!!

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 12/07/2012 19:26

Pee into a paper cup/plastic cup then tip it into the sample bottle.

seabuckthorn · 12/07/2012 19:26

No join the club, don't worry!

TheOneWithTheHair · 12/07/2012 19:27

Take an old mug with you. Pee in there and transfer it. As long as the mug is clean it should be ok

ButtonBoo · 12/07/2012 19:33

Ha!! I remember that! I used to get such a 'piddly' amount in the pot.

They usually have extra wide ones for mums to be.

Superslinger · 12/07/2012 19:33

Ha, I'm not too bad at doing it, but always wonder how MUCH do they need? I always feel really over-zealous giving them an almost full pot, but then think that's probably easier for them to dip the thing into? I don't know, but always find it a bit embarrassing handing it over!

Tips on how to do, well I never, ever sit on a public loo, so well trained in the squat. What I do is squat, do a little tiny wee, watching for precisely where it's flowing. Stop. Aim pot whereabouts I think is the right spot, and then start to go again. Seems to work pretty well, sometimes I tiny bit goes down the side, but never much. HTH?

Spoutlet · 12/07/2012 19:34

I bought a plastic funnel for this during my last pregnancy and I'm using it again now; this way you can wee straight into the pot.

FrustratedMod · 12/07/2012 19:34

It's a nightmare. I'm so huge now I can't even see what's going on down there so I just have to hope I'm aiming in the right place. My hospital now has sample bottles with little funnels to wee into but they are just useless - the hole into the bottle is tiny so it takes ages for the wee to filter into the bottle and I always end up pouring it all over myself. One way I have done it is just to wrap the bottle in loads of tissue paper then at least it doesn't end up getting wet.

What was that Victoria Wood joke - women have the velocity power but not the steering capacity :)

Cheekychops84 · 12/07/2012 19:43

A cheap jug is brill ! Easy to pour in the pot and rinse out :)

Catsmamma · 12/07/2012 19:46

I used to use a washing powder scoop!! It was slim, quite deep, perfect shape for that particular area and had a nice long handle and a small lip ideal for transferring pee into the tube!

I even had a spare one for my handbag for hospital visits!

Catsmamma · 12/07/2012 19:48

washing powder scoop

happy to help!

Collect next visits pot on this visit and arrive having allready filled it at home.

I used paper cups.

Indith · 12/07/2012 19:53

I always picked up the pot during the appointent for the next time so I could do it at home then just piss in a jug and pour in.

Chunkychicken · 12/07/2012 20:04

I was given a pot to keep so re-use it; not sure what they expect but as they return the pot full of wee, after testing, I presume they expect you to empty, clean, dry & re-fill. I just use a plastic cup & transfer. I put the pot in a plastic sandwich bag for transport, just in case.

cleas · 12/07/2012 20:08

I had to do a lot of this last year being tested for a medical condition so I kept a small container near the toilet then decanter it into the vial.
I found those little glass pots from the nice chocolate mousses to be just about the right size to hold in the loo Grin

mrsalwaysawake · 12/07/2012 20:37

I start weeing, then quickly move the pot into the stream, then out again. Wipe pot and hand after.

SimplySoo · 12/07/2012 22:13

Thanks for the tips everyone! Taking a pot for next time is a good idea, and I like the idea of taking a plastic cup too, may do that next time. With my bump getting bigger it's getting increasingly difficult!

Invest in a shewee!

CharleyAB · 13/07/2012 00:41

I completely grossed myself out on monday. I did a sample two weeks ago but the midwife gave it back to me after she was finished with it for me to dispose of. On Monday I found it at the bottom of my handbag. Really revolting. A new level of grossness for me.

Bleurgh CharleyAB

I was seen regularly in the last few weeks for monitoring at the DAU. When you turn up they hand you a pee pot and you do your thing and sit back in the waiting room until your called. I wrapped my pot in some tissue and put it in my handbag on the chair next to me. It started to get busy and someone needed the seat my Hannah was on. As I placed my bag on the floor it fell over and my purse fell out with some other bits, including my pee pot, which rolled across the floor, unravelling itself from the tissue and only stopped when it hit the man (who was waiting for his partner) sitting opposite me on the foot.

I'm sure at the time I tried to make some kind of joke but I've tried to block it from my memory! The shame!!

ButtonBoo · 13/07/2012 06:10

Hannah?! WTF? ....handbag!

Jasper1980 · 13/07/2012 06:28

I bought a £1 measuring jug from the pound shop and then just peed in the and poured it into the cup. Just don't use it for anything else.
