Have you dyed your hair during pregnancy?

I havent dyed mine (well I had highlights early days before I knew I was pregnant) since finding out. My roots were horrendous so went to the hairdressers last night and had some lowlights put through to blend my roots up to the rest of my hair. Was quite please with the result. Not worried because I know that it is safe as far as anyone knows.

However, I'm a secondary teacher and my hair is noticebly darker. All day I've had kids saying 'Miss you shouldn't dye your hair when you're pregnant!!" to me. This is the hormones and I'm not usually sensitive to teenagers but they've made me feel like the worst mother to be ever.

Is dying your hair during pregnancy still seen as a bad thing by a lot of people? I've read all the advice that it's fine so I know it is but are people going to act like I'm smoking 20 a day?

Just trying to gauge how many other people do it to make myself feel a bit cheerier. Thanks :-)

I did it. Twice!

Checked first that it was ok to do so (and it was). No-one ever mentioned to me that i shouldn't have.

Plus you don't want to look like a slummy mummy in those first pics....Grin

Erm... I have a hair dye on now!! I'm 26wks!! The only issue I'm aware of is that sometimes because of hormones or whatever the due doesn't always take as it should.. Ie you get a shade or do lighter/darker.. Confused

celebmum · 11/07/2012 14:33

I have 7mins remaining untill I wash this off... I will let you know!!

sammyleh · 11/07/2012 14:34

Absolutely, I've not coloured mine yet but I will be doing soon with these roots :)

ellangirl · 11/07/2012 14:36

Yep. Both times. Never worried about it to be honest! Me with roots and greys much scarier prospect!

whysoserious · 11/07/2012 14:57

I was shocked that people think of it as a bad thing to do when pregnant (I use the term 'people' loosely, for they are teenagers and we all know they can't be classed as people just yetWink) - although they must have heard this from their parents Hmm

i asked this question on here a couple of weeks ago as i was considering highlights and everyone said it was ok!

apparently official advice is that it's better to get highlights (or lowlights) that a full head dye because they don't touch your scalp.

FireOverBabylon · 11/07/2012 15:01

I waited until I was 3 months' pregnant but then I did dye my hair as usual - every 3 months, so I didn't quite get to the 9 month hairdresser's appointment as DS was induced earlier than planned!

whysoserious · 11/07/2012 18:17

I just read on another thread on here that darker hair dye is worse than bleach Hmm Anyone know anything about this?

yeah AFAIK highlights with foils are fine (but I still avoided them in the first 12 weeks this time, had them in the first 12 weeks last time)

I wouldn't go for an all over full perm colour that sits on your scalp, but I do hightlights and wash out ones

Load of twaddle I think. I have had highlights in my hair throughout 2 pregnancies, both babies are perfect, 1 head, 10 fingers 10 toes etc etc.
I'll be doing the same this time, i even had my highlights done in the middle of ivf cycle and it all appears to be fine so far. If its not I very much doubt it will be anything to do with wella colour 577 medium ash blonde.

lauratheexplorer · 11/07/2012 18:42

Hair dye in pregnancy is fine. The guidelines recommend being in a well ventilated area, waiting until the second trimester and being vigilant with patch tests as you can suddenly develop bad reactions in colour/rashes etc. I dyed mine and was fine.

Flisspaps · 11/07/2012 18:44

I did mine. Lovely bright red.

Cheriefroufrou · 11/07/2012 18:46

oh yes always re patch test! your skin changes
I re tested for my hairdresser's dye, was fine
but my normal eyelash dye that I've been having at the same salon for years made my wrist itch like mad this time (was also fine in last pregnancy) - so glad I re tested before putting it on my eyes!

Scarredbutnotbroken · 11/07/2012 18:47

I did it both times. Dd1 turned out fine! Dd2 seems ok in there Smile
No one chastised me for dying my hair when pg

EndoplasmicReticulum · 11/07/2012 18:48

Yes, I did. I did check it out first, I couldn't see any reason why not.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 11/07/2012 18:51

I think it's 2 things- 1. The hairstyle often doesn't 'take' the same during pregnancy and you can end up with dodgy hair

  1. You have to make sure your somewhere really well ventilated (think its more for home dying) I dyed mine at home right through my pregnancy, no problems at all!
Showmethemhappyfeet · 11/07/2012 18:51

Not hairstyle, hairdye!

Cheriefroufrou · 11/07/2012 18:52

Put it this way, I wouldn't wanna be a pregnant colourist and handle it EVERY DAY, but I view it like coffee, its not ideal in pregnancy, and don't do it too often, but spaced out its okay

HappyAsASandboy · 11/07/2012 18:57

I did a blonde home dye every 4 to 6 weeks throughout pregnancy, though I did rinse it off with the shower, leaning over the bath. It seemed unnecessary to rinse in bath/proper shower and give the dye that much more contact with my skin.

I don't think it is as terrible as it was once (different formula? new research?), but it probably is a risk, just like the occassional glass of wine/champagne I had during pregnancy and the goats cheese I occasionally ate.

bonzo77 · 11/07/2012 18:59

The nhs website says its ok.

babyrose · 11/07/2012 19:28

I asked when I was pg with ds and mw said it was fine.

veeeee · 11/07/2012 19:30

I have

shushpenfold · 11/07/2012 19:30

Yes....dds came out with very nice highlights!
