I think I may be pregnant, period well overdue and the clearlue test says 3+ weeks pregnant, but I'm going to test again in a week as I don't really believe it.

Anyway assuming I am pregnant how bad are the following:

I wasn't trying at all and have not been taking folic acid?
I have been drinking wine? Glass during the week and more at weekends.

The test is probably wrong and I'm worrying over nothing, but are these things really bad?

I have never been pregnant before so if I am, what do I do now?

The test is not wrong. You are pregnant.

Don't worry about the wine or the lack of folic acid but do start taking folic acid now and cut back on the vino :)

You need to ring your GP surgery and make an appointment to book in with the MW, probably around 10 weeks.

strawberrypenguin · 22/06/2012 17:16

If you have a positive test you are preg - go get another test now if you don't believe it.

Frolic acid you can start taking now either on it's own or as part of a pregnancy vitamin

Plenty of people drink before they know they are preg you are unlikely to have done any damage.

Lastly congratulations!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 22/06/2012 17:17

The test is not wrong!! Make a GP/MW appointment and start on folic acid ASAP.

Superslinger · 22/06/2012 17:17

Most people have enough folic acid in their diet. I had a rubbish diet before got pregnant, hadn't taken folic acid until after finding was pregnant and everything was fine.

SO many people seem to drink before realising pregnant. doesn't seem to cause problems either. in fact guidelines say you can drink during the whole of pregnancy (can't remember how much - check the NHS website).

HTH

JennyPiccolo · 22/06/2012 17:17

You're fine. Up the duff, but fine. Get some vitamins and phone the doctors.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 22/06/2012 17:18

Tests don't give false positives (99.9% of the time) so congratulations.

Folic acid is not the be all and end all, you can start it now. Don't panic about the wine baby isn't attatched by the placenta yet.

Sometimes it takes a whole for the news to sink in. Next you need to book a doctors appointment for about 6-8 weeks after your last period!

Coops79 · 22/06/2012 17:18

Congratulations! As I understand it, pregnancy tests sometimes give a false negative but never a false positive so it's unlikely to be wrong. Don't worry about what you have/haven't been doing so far; it'll be fine (virtually everyone I know has done exactly the same and all their kids are absolutely healthy). Start taking folic acid and cut down on the alcohol and ring your GP for a booking appointment (they'll probably not even test you, just take the home-test's word for it).

Hope this is happy news.
:)

strawberrypenguin · 22/06/2012 17:18

Frolic acid! Sounds fun I meant folic auto correct fail!

Pinkflipflop · 22/06/2012 17:18

I could be between 3 and 7 weeks if the test is correct. I don't think my GP's surgery has a midwive, just doctors Confused

If you might be pregnant, and wouldn't consider a termination if it's confirmed, then I suggest you start taking folic acid from today.

The wine isn't likely to have done any damage, but again recommendations are that you don't drink. So if you want to keep the baby, stop the wine.

Forget about what you did before now - there's no point worrying about it, just start doing things right from now on. If you're showing as 3+ weeks the doctor would date you at probably around 5w or more (you can date yourself from the first day of your last period).

Folic acid is important until 12w.

As for not believing the test, perhaps go and see your doctor. They will be able to give you a blood test which you may more readily believe? Also, they can talk through with you your options, and what you should do next.

YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 22/06/2012 17:20

They will probably not have midwives in situ, but they will likely visit for ante natal clings, or you will need to go to another local location.

Congratulations?

Pinkflipflop · 22/06/2012 17:22

I'll be a bit shocked if I am pregnant. I'm 33, married, employed and have a dog so I suppose it is happy news. I feel a bit shocked to be honest. The test can't be wrong?

OP posts:
Stacks · 22/06/2012 17:23

That sounds a bit harsh - it's not meant to be!

You didn't sound excited or happy about your test, though nor did you imply you would want a termination. I just didn't want to assume!

YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 22/06/2012 17:24

False positives are very rare (false negatives can be more common, especially if you are testing early). You are almost certainly pregnant. Especially if it is saying 3+ weeks as it means that the hormone levels it is picking up are high.

Pinkflipflop · 22/06/2012 17:24

Sorry to sound so incoherent but dh and I weren't trying for a baby.

OP posts:
YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 22/06/2012 17:25

Sorry, posted too fast.

You 'suppose' it is happy news - as in you wanted kids one day but this is a bit of a shock? Give yourself some time. Many people start the road to parenthood that way! Congratulations! (with an exclamation mark that time, not a question mark).

Pinkflipflop · 22/06/2012 17:26

stacks would under no circumstances consider a termination. I know what you mean my op didn't convey happiness but it's just this is quite unexpected.

I would say you are pregnant and if you want to take a reassurance test then I would do it tomorrow not wait a week.

Wrt to your questions with ds1 DP and I certainly hadn't been trying (we were together only 6/7 weeks when I found out) I was 9 weeks by this time! I was not taking folic acid either but started taking it straight away. I was also a bit wild and was drinking ALOT about 2/3days a week but at your early stage it is not harmful as it doesn't pass the placenta (I think) as the placenta is not developed yet (again I think) I was also smoking about 20 a day DS is fine.

You need to organise an appointment with your gp who should refer you to a mw (this may be different for you you may be able to just go direct to mw) do you know when your lmp was?

I hope this isn't really bad news for you but if it is the dr will discuss options with you. Xx

Splinters · 22/06/2012 17:28

The test reacts to a hormone that simply doesn't exist in people who aren't pregnant because it's only secreted by a developing placenta (ok, and also by some extremely rare kinds of tumours -- you are much more likely to be pregnant). If you really think the test might have been faulty, get a different brand and try again sooner than in a week. But really, congratulations!

Dinosaurdrip · 22/06/2012 17:29

Wow I'm a slow typer there were no replies when I started typing so sorry about all the x posts

Pinkflipflop · 22/06/2012 17:30

What's imp?

OP posts:
DangerMousey · 22/06/2012 17:32

You are definitely up the stick!

Make an appointment to see your GP. If you tell them when your last period started they will be able to work out how far along you are. They will also be able to explain how the antenatal care works in your area (ie will you need to see a midwife at the local hospital or in your docs surgery for all your antenatal appointments).

The GP will also give you a referral to the midwifery services locally. Once he or she has done this referral you will usually be contacted by post in the next couple of weeks with a date for your "booking appointment" with the midwife. This is the first of your many antenatal appointments where they take your bloods, measure your blood pressure etc.

Well that's how it all works in my area anyway.

Congratulations!

Dinosaurdrip · 22/06/2012 17:34

Was Lmp last menstrual period.

DangerMousey · 22/06/2012 17:34

Lmp = last menstrual period. Ie what date did your last period start. This is the date they use to calculate how pregnant you are. And what your estimated due date is.

Pinkflipflop · 22/06/2012 17:37

Last period was 3rd may, have long cycles.
