Maternity dress for a wedding, why is it so hard???

I'm going to a couple of weddings this summer, one in a couple of weeks and one (hopefully) two weeks before my due date in September. I've had no luck finding a nice dress anywhere - I went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago and used a dress hire website, which was brilliant, but at £60 a time it's a bit pricey for multiple weddings (will use again as a last resort if need be though). I did find the lovely dress I hired, but it's £250 to buy, sadly...

I ordered a couple from Crave and somewhere else, but they are all so damn long! I'm 5'2" and mid-calf is not a good look for me (also, my legs are still quite a good shape so hopefully will balance out the big stomach) - I want something that hits just on the knee if possible.

Has anyone seen anything lovely that would be suitable, or know of any good online retailers that do that kind of thing?

Try topshop? At least reasonably cheap but unlikely to be recognised as its maternity. I got a simple flattering black shift dress which has a wide 'flippy' skirt for 20 quid but did think it could actually be dressed up with some lovely shoes etc, its also in a floral version. I suppose it depends how 'dressy' you want to be. They had some other stuff I think.

Online is best though

I just got one from from seraphine for my BIL's wedding in August (I'll be 27 weeks) try tiffany rose too - that's a bit more expensive but have a good resale value on eBay!

Staverton · 17/06/2012 16:27

Jojo does a nice beaded blue one on knee. Get 10% off through mumsnet

Or try asos- there are loads on there.

Spuddybean · 17/06/2012 16:28

Depends what you are looking for but i went to a formal function and couldn't afford to spend £250 on a dress i would never wear again, so i bought a size 18 empire line (with a tie under the bust) and altered it a bit (i'm usually a 12/14 and my boobs haven't caught up with the bump yet).

So perhaps try cheaper wedding sections like BHS and get a bigger size?

Tiffany Rose has good stuff for under £200.

Loislane78 · 17/06/2012 17:11

Second ASOS, was on there today and they had some lovely dresses that would suit your height and if you got good legs I'm sure you'll find something on there :)

alison222 · 17/06/2012 17:30

is this any good?

HaggisNeepsTatties · 17/06/2012 19:35

I've got one from Tiffany Rose for £165 I think, which as I'm wearing it 3 times I felt it was worth treating myself!

Hi! New Look have got a good range of lovely Maxi dresses - I bought this one for a christening and it looks great and is really comfy - they have different ones and plain colours too! www.newlook.com/shop/maternity/shop-by/maternity-blue-paisley-square-print-maxi-dress_253844449

I have 2 Tiffany rose dresses, very comfy and flattering. I got one second hand and one directly for website. Would recommend getting them second hand as they are expensive. The one I got from website originally for 3/4 occasions but only managed to get to one :-( making it a very expensive one wear dress!

highheelsandequations · 17/06/2012 21:03

I had a tiffany rose dress to wear for one ball and one wedding whilst pregnant, loved it and got loads of compliments.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 17/06/2012 21:09

Seraphine was a lifesaver last time. This time I have worn a lovely (non maternity) maxi from Phase Eight which looks fab with a bump (I'm only 5@2" as well)

MissTapestry · 17/06/2012 21:52

Quiz have tons of beautiful maxi dresses at the mo which fit over my bump at nearly 37 weeks. I could seriously have picked up 10 dresses when I went in the other day, and the bonus is you can still wear it after baby is born cos it's not maternity. Smile

Katla · 21/06/2012 21:43

I got a nice White floral one with pink roses out of Jojo maman bebe, it was about £30 which was v reasonable and there is a nice shrug from Laura Ashley that matches colour perfectly.

nannyl · 21/06/2012 22:20

i saw a couple of nice ones in jojo maman babe

if you think finding a maternity dress for a wedding is hard you should try finding a dress for breast feeding!!!! Wink

jojo maman babe didnt even have 1 suitable when i was there a few weeks ago... (i dont mean they had one that i didnt like..... they didnt have a single one!!!!)

FlangelinaBallerina · 22/06/2012 07:59

I found the New Look online range to be pretty extensive, well priced too. Like you I'm short, so a maxi dress didn't appeal, but I got a nice silver dress just over the knee. Length seemed fine. There is the option of getting a non-maternity dress in a bigger size, but it's risky if you're wearing it just before due date.

crochetcircle · 22/06/2012 08:24

I got a lovely dress in mamas and papas for work, but you could easily dress it up and there were quite a few knee length ones to choose from. My legs are my only/best feature so I definitely don't want them covered!

Earlier in pregnancy I bought a size 16 from coast which worked really well.

theressomethingaboutmarie · 22/06/2012 09:47

Katia, I bought the same dress and have worn it to two weddings this year. It's really quite lovely and not expensive!

Vassia · 22/06/2012 10:12

There was a shop when I was in Dubai called Destination Maternity, just googled them and they have a website with international shipping. Some of the evening dresses look quite nice, and reasonably priced. Possibly worth a look.

I hated being pregnant, mainly because I could never find anything really nice to wear, so I feel your pain!
