What does everyone plan to do re alcohol? I'm almost eleven weeks and had decided no booze in first trimester and maybe a glass of wine with food, possibly once a week afterwards. But now I'm in swing of no booze, am not sure. What's everyone else thinking on this front? I feel more cautious than would have expected!

im REALLY surprised ive not missed drink at all....and i drank a LOT. I really miss fags though. I know they say glass or whatever every so often wont hurt but i dont even want any... even when my bf is sat there with his beer looking like an alki drinking on his own :-D

kalidasa · 13/06/2012 21:40

Hi. I'm 15 weeks and haven't had any at this point. Just beginning to recover from v. bad hyperemesis though and thought today for the first time that I wouldn't mind e.g. a shandy. So I think I feel OK about v. small quantities occasionally. I am a lightweight at the best of times so it will only be really tiny amounts.

Seona1973 · 13/06/2012 21:40

I didnt drink at all during both of my pregnancies - didnt really miss it

Cheekychops84 · 13/06/2012 21:43

I really felt sometimes I could jus do with a glass of wine bit wen I tried I was like urgh I dnt really want this lol funny isn't it ?

Kelbells · 13/06/2012 21:44

I thought that I'd have the odd drink but I'm now 22 weeks and haven't even had a refreshing g&t so far this summer... I might have been more tempted if we'd actually had a summer! Grin

I think it's down to the fact that I'm pretty sure it can't do any good, I've had 2 mc's before so may be a little paranoid! I'd rather be safe than sorry, having said that, I friend of mine looked forward to her weekly glass of wine after work every Friday night and she has 4 of the brightest, bonniest boys going!

Certainly wouldn't judge anyone for moderate drinking while preggers but imagine I'll abstain until I can have a big glass of red, pate, a mooing steak, and plate of stinking, mouldy cheeses 5 minutes after the baby makes an appearance! Smile

MangoHedgehog · 13/06/2012 21:44

I laid off (mostly) in first trimester and from then on, have had the odd drink of wine i.e. one every couple of weeks. Also the odd beer when I have really wanted one, which has been 3 times this pregnancy! but have been very much led by what my body seems to want, so actually I haven't finished many glasses I've started. i don't know about other people but when I'm pregnant alcohol doesn't affect me in quite the same way - usually half a glass will do nicely and I honestly don't feel like finishing it, so I don't.

Thechick · 13/06/2012 21:45

I stopped drinking in October of last year, one glass of wine made me really really ill for days and days, so luckily didn't have to deal with giving up booze when I got pg in Mar. But recently have been really craving pimms, like really really craving.

EclecticShock · 13/06/2012 21:45

I didn't bother, easier that way.

FreeButtonBee · 13/06/2012 21:47

I am having a small bit. Mainly when out with people who don't know/I don't want to tell. Today was at a corporate event and had 1/4 glass of wine and about 1/4 of a tin of Pimms (about 1 unit altogether) plus about 10 glasses of water!. Will prob continue with this for the next 2 moNths and then when I am haooier to tell people will reconsider.

I feel fairly relaxedmabout having alcohol so long as it's not much and drunk slowly/with other liquid.

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 13/06/2012 21:48

I didn't drink at all for first 15 weeks then after that I really fancied cider every time I had a curry. So I've probably half a pint once a fortnight or so since 15 weeks.

I though I'd really miss wine but the smell of it is horrible!

WaitingForMe · 13/06/2012 21:50

I drink a glass twice a week and have since start of second trimester. That was my MWs guidelines.

NervousAt20 · 13/06/2012 23:00

I'm 19 weeks and haven't had anything even though I would love too! Wasn't a big drinker before. I don't plan on having any as I'd just rather be safer then sorry

Badgerina · 13/06/2012 23:15

I'm 26 weeks, and I've had no booze since BFP. I drank a teeny bit when pregnant with DS1. This time though I just can't be bothered. It's only 9 months which is no big deal to me. I'll look forward to the odd glass or two whilst breast feeding but again, not that fussed really (and I like to drink usually).

Beans1977 · 14/06/2012 05:51

Im 26 weeks as well. DIdn't drink for first 12 weeks (I had a previous MC at 14 weeks but didn't drink through any of that) but since then have had a few glasses of champagne. I figure if I'm going to have a drink every now and then it might as well be the posh stuff!

Thumbwitch · 14/06/2012 06:03

When I was pg with DS, I stayed off it for the first 16w apart from 1 half glass of fizz at a wedding. Then I got married at 17w pg and had a couple of glasses of fizz; went to Belgium and France for our honeymoon and had a glass of wine or fizz with meals most evenings; then came home and Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer and died 8d later. The stress of that was horrific, so I had a glass of red wine (spritzered with sparkling mineral water) with food most evenings to help counter the stress, which would have been bad for DS anyway.

This time around - absolutely none. But I'd been off it pretty much anyway just as an aid to TTC and as one less contributary factor to MC. I don't miss it - and even mostly don't want my de-alcoholised wine that I'd been drinking before, I've moved almost exclusively over to fruit juice and Grapetiser (like Appletiser but with red grapes, very similar to Shloer)

PipJoy · 14/06/2012 06:30

I'm 13 weeks and abstaining, all the way I think. Basically I really like a drink and I can't imagine it's terribly easy to just have one glass of wine or one beer, think for me that would be harder! I do mind tricks, tonic with lime and just pretend there is gin in it. M&S do a soft brew apple with hops and barley that I drink out of the (small) bottle while watching the footy pretending is beer! Non alcoholic beers and ciders good too! Am okay with it, thought would be torture.

Florin · 14/06/2012 06:59

I drink a small glass once or twice a week, which my midwife said was completly fine. Didn't drink in first trimester or first half of 2nd trimester as wine tasted horrid to me then.
I do really miss one of dh's really strong G&T's. Have avoided them completly as a weak one would just be a disappointment. Hurry up baby (I'm 39 weeks today) so I can have one!

happygonicky · 14/06/2012 07:16

Thanks so much, everyone. Really interesting to hear what everyone else is doing! Am going to stick to Becks blue, grapetiser and tonic water. I do miss wine, but it's easier to not drink than i'd thought. If I really fancy a small glass into second trimester I'll have one! Thank you.

I'm having a glass of wine or half a cider once or twice a week, if we're going out with friends, to a wedding or out for a meal. I'm not drinking anything at all in the house.
I've also come to the conclusion that Erdinger Alcoholfrei is pretty nice; Becks Blue is pretty nasty, and de-alcoholised wine is absolutely vile. So if I'm in a pub and they don't have a decent alcohol-free beer, I'll go for an Appletise or a (nice and cheap) lime and soda.
If I do have a glass of wine, I'll also often have it in a big glass with lots of ice and soda, to make it last longer.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 14/06/2012 11:14

I'm 23+5 and I've had 3 small glasses of wine, all in tri2 - mostly though, like cheekychops, I've been really fancying wine but then when I have it in my glass I'm a bit like "urgh, really?" :o And I used to drink way too much a lot too.

GrandPoohBah · 14/06/2012 12:55

I've had a drink maybe two or three times a week now I'm in the second trimester. I completely went off alcohol in the first trimester so didn't drink at all.

MangoHedgehog · 14/06/2012 15:32

Have asked DH to sneak a bottle of fizz (can be any old plonk, I don't care!) and a round of Brie into the postnatal ward...!

Jergens · 14/06/2012 15:47

I didn't have any last time, including the month pre conception. I did crave wine though. Also didn't have any for the first 3 months BFing.
Am 19+6 and didn't have any the month Pre conception or to date. Not really fancied it this time though as I've had hyperemesis.

pinkpeony · 14/06/2012 16:15

I had a glass of wine twice a week throughout both pregnancies. On special occasions might have a third. Don't particularly like other alcohol even when not pregnant. Really missed the wine and felt like such a treat post-pregnancy to actually be able to have 2 glasses of wine in one evening!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 14/06/2012 16:23

Mango DH has orders to pop to Tesco and get me a bottle of plonk, some blue cheese and a steak (I like them mooing) once I give birth Wink
