empty gestation sac

I am currently preg again after a mmc in march.
I went for an early scan today hoping for some reassurance that I didn't really get.
I was expecting to be between 7 & 8wks. So then should have seen more than an empty sac and probably even a heart beat.
All they could see was an empty sac which she commented was quite big but thats not necessarily a problem and perhaps my dates are all out so I'm not that far along.
Am going for a scan next week to see if any changes. Does anyone have any experience in this?

I think when I had an early scan at the same dates (roughly) the just saw the sac, Deffo not a heartbeat ( they didn't see this even at the next one which was about nine weeks ). It's easy to say but try not to stress, when will you be seen again?

cartoonface · 13/06/2012 07:19

I have an appointment next week tues. Should they have seen the yolk sac too? Mine was just the gestation sac

Literally all I can remember is they could see a sac. It was a tv scan. The next one was an over the tummy one. It's such early days at this stage. try to relax and no googling!

Goggle is not my friend rite now. Sometimes it gives me hope others it just confirms to me that its all over

If your dates are wrong all could be fine. The American pregnancy association has great info on Fetal development that I have always found really accurate.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 13/06/2012 09:15

I had this with ds. I gave the date from my lmp and should have been. 7weeks, sac measured 5w4 days, saw the yolk sac and nothing else. Went back 2 weeks later and saw a little peanut with a heartbeat measuring perfectly. He is now 7 years old. I must have ovulated late that month. If you take off 14 days from your average cycle length that will tell you roughly when you conceived, add another 2 weeks on and that will tell you how far along you probably are.

cartoonface · 13/06/2012 09:41

Rite on line calculators put me at 7wks 5days. The sonographer did seem pretty optimistic that my cycle is all out from previous miscarriage though as I only had one cycle before falling pregnant again

Want to bump my post up a bit so hopefully more people see. Totally been scaring myself with Google

cartoonface, I can't really reassure you but I am on here looking for advice on a similar thing. I started bleeding slightly last night and went to the early pregnancy unit today. The pregnancy just looked like a black sac on the screen, with the tiniest, almost non-existent dot in the corner. They said it doesn't really look the right shape and the only way it is viable is if I got my dates wrong.

After two previous miscarriages, I've prepared myself that this one is going to go the same way. In a way, I feel reassured that there's something wrong with it and not just wrong with me. The hospital signed me off for a week and I'm going back next Thursday for another scan. I guess I should have a little bit of hope that it will grow in the next week. Part of me is just thinking it's all gone wrong and I should pour myself a large glass of wine and wait for the worst to happen though :-( The post above does give some hope though.

cartoonface · 14/06/2012 18:36

that post also gives me a bit of hope but i feel the same about awaiting the worst with a glass of wine. life is cruel ur very brave.
my gestational sac is big and probably could fit in size was with the 8wks i think i am. she said that i should worry that is big, that my dates could be all wrong because of previous mc and only having one cycle before becoming preg again. but not even seeing a yolk sac worries me. i wanted an early scan for reasurrance and its made everything worse. by 6wks there should be a yolk from what ive read. also im not that sure theres much room for errors with my dates. lmp was 17th april. i had a postive ovulation test 29th april (that predicts ov 1-2 before) and was expecting next period 16th may if u count back that would mean i ov'd at the average timein my cycle. i had a postive hpt on the 15th may and the next day (day period was due) i used a clearblue conception indicator test which said 2-3wks which is a docs 4-5wks. so i am banking on the ov and preg test being wrong hmmmm not sure if thats poss. but is it true i could just have a slow grower? should i just accept i will mc this one too.
how have u coped going thru it twice already?

I think you have good reasons to be optimistic cartoonface. Your recent miscarriage could have led to a longer cycle. My periods were every 28 days like clockwork up until these miscarriages and since then they have been between 25 and 35 days. I know that still might not make the maths work in your case, but from the things I've read online today at this early stage it is so tiny that it must be difficult to see exactly what is going on. I have Googled 5 and 8 week scan pictures and mine definitely looked more like a 5 week sized dot! But if your gestation sac is the right size, perhaps the little yolk sac just wasn't visible for whatever reason. I am more pessimistic for myself because the gestation sac is an irregular shape too and I have started bleeding.

It looks like we both just have to wait now :-( The hospital have signed me off for a week with threatened miscarriage. I almost feel better waiting now I think things are going wrong though than when I was full of hope. It's such a cruel thing and I feel sad that you and others are going through the same thing too. I think it is best to stop with the googling (I'm going to as well) and just use this forum, as there are some lovely, supportive people here. No one knows how things are going to turn out so I think the best thing you can have are people to talk to who know what you're going through.

I found that after the first two pregnancies went wrong I actually mended pretty quickly and tried to be positive about trying again and reminded myself the odds were in my favour. I only feel stressed once I'm pregnant as the uncertainty and fear of miscarriage can drive you a bit mad. I think that we can both be positive for the fact we have got pregnant quite quickly (it took me three cycles to get pregnant all three times). I can't even imagine how terrible this would be if this pregnancy had taken me years to achieve and then it went wrong. Even if these ones don't work out for us, the odds are that we'll both have healthy babies one day :-)

I hope that you're feeling okay. I had terrible anxiety dreams last night after I started bleeding. I think we just have to look after ourselves and accept our minds will be on other things until our next scans. x

Purplecatti · 14/06/2012 19:25

I hope it all works out OK.
It's entirely possible to get your dates wrong. At my first appointment the MW gave me a due date in September and I went to the scan expecting it to be about 16 weeks. The scan said 11 weeks and I was given a new due date in October. It must have happened really late in my cycle, like the day before it ended.

cartoonface · 14/06/2012 19:37

wow really purple* thats a big diff.
I am off work this week so am trying to busy myself around the house. Must step away from goggle, sometimes it just makes me feel worse.
I keep imaging waking up in a pool of blood.
I've had no bleeding in this preg. But I did spot last time 2 or 3 times lasting 1 to 2 days each. I was about 11wks I mc naturally after having my first scan around 10wks they saw a tiny foetus no heartbeat booked me a 2nd scan but I knew there was no hope. Was pleased to not have the agonising wait. I think the shock brought it on

Just a little bit of hope for you.

I thought i was around 6 weeks and had an early pregnancy scan however nothing but a sac there so thought the worst etc

however went back 2 weeks later and there is the little bean they measured me at 7+1 weeks.

So sometimes everything can be all over the place, they could also only see anything by doing an internal scan.

Fingers, toes and everything crossed for you

cartoonface · 15/06/2012 07:43

It was an internal scan I had she could see the exact same and she could through my belly which she tried first.
I hope a week is long enough to see some change when I go back

milk · 15/06/2012 08:21

I had a scan at 5 weeks (I thought I was 6.5weeks) and saw an empty sac.

Went back 2 weeks later and saw yolk and heartbeat :)

cartoonface · 15/06/2012 08:49

Ah yay milk. Im glad so many of u have positive outcomes from similar circumstances

BettySwallocks2012 · 15/06/2012 10:58

Similar story here, epu scan last Monday showed just a shadow so going back this Monday. I thought I am / was 7 weeks today as conception date was 11th May and I think lmp was 27th April. I have had some bleeding and a few cramps but nothing like the extent of my 2 previous miscarriages. I have also had a hcg blood test done yesterday and it will be repeated on Monday..

Fingers crossed for everyone

cartoonface · 15/06/2012 11:09

I wondered if they mite do my hcg but as yet they haven't.
I really hope we all get good outcomes at our next scans x

OP posts:
BettySwallocks2012 · 15/06/2012 11:11

I was the one that instigated hcg bloods to be done, so maybe worth a try enquiring about it in your own GP's surgery as I did ???

cartoonface · 15/06/2012 11:50

Oh rite yes. I've prob left it a bit late thou as my scan is on tues so I guess they'll make a decision then

OP posts:
BettySwallocks2012 · 15/06/2012 13:20

So my first HCG result was 2726 at approx 6+5, not sure how that racks up but Monday's test will be the comparative one. Any thoughts on how this looks?

Here's hoping to a swift weekend so that all our scans come around quick!

Good luck

sammyleh · 15/06/2012 14:08
