Just for a bit of fun,i'm interested in how big your dc were at birth and at what gestation?
My dd's were 9lb at 2 days early and 9lb 7 at a week over,both measured 56cm.
I'm 35 weeks with dc3 and looking at a similair weight, also were you aware you were having a large baby or was it a bit of a surprise and how was your delivery?
Thanks

DS1 was 8lb 1 at 6 days over
DS2 was 10lb 1 at 2 days over
They didn't measure length of either tho.

Both 'normal' births. G&A. (Not that I wasn't begging DH to get me drugs!)

Kind of worried about how big DC3 will be!

Gingerbreadlatte · 02/05/2012 12:13

OOh can I join?

Im preg with DC2 and worrying about the outcome and hope I dont get my planned 2nd homebirth canned because of this...

DC1 was born at 40+6 at almost 11lbs.

MW had no idea about DC1 size, predicted weight was 8lb!

OhBrotherWhereArtThou · 02/05/2012 13:10

Oh my goodness Gingerbread! I think it's scary what they can miss, mine were fairly big but at least I was prepared!

DD - 9lb6 at 40+12, 58cm, epidural
DS - 9lb12 at 40+4, 56cm, G&A

DC3 due in 6 weeks so will be watching this thread!

Mine were both 10 days early.
DD was 9lb 8oz
DS was 10lb 5oz

We stopped there for fear of the next one being 11lb something :D

sambrads · 02/05/2012 13:37

hey ladies can i ask a question?
Where yas told at the 29 week scan that the baby was gonna be a whooper?

DS was 8lb 4oz
DD was 7lb 12oz

had 29 weeks scan today and baby is measuring 31 weeks and weighs 3lb 8oz already. they have told me its gonna be a 9lb or more baby.

would any of you laies believe this?

OyOfMidWorld · 02/05/2012 14:10

My DS was born at 39+4 and weighed 10lbs 5oz. I measured spot on for my dates all the way through and I thought he would be around 9lbs. The MW who delivered him guessed at about that weight too. We were all really shocked at the size of him!

I'm currently 23+1 pregnant with DC2 and have a GTT and growth scans booked for the next few months. I'm just hoping that this one is smaller or, at the very least, not too much bigger!

Emandlu · 02/05/2012 14:29

I was measuring term +2 weeks from 34 weeks pregnant with ds. I only had a 20wk scan and no comments were made then about size.
Sizing scans apparently have a high margin of error, at least that is what I was told with my ds. I was offered one but didn't take them up on it.

Benaberry · 02/05/2012 15:41

Can I join in?

DS1 was 9lb when he arrived bang on due date. They'd been predicting large, and I'd had growth scans, but main surprise when he turned up was that he was "only" 9lb - we were all expecting 10lb+ Shock (one of the few things I remember about being in theatre during EMCS was finding out the weight and DH saying "is that all"!

This one also predicted big; measuring 34w at 26+3, although a fair bit of that is probably me, and have growth scans and GTT booked for tomorrow. 21wk scan estimate suggested 1lb3 at 21+3, which seems pretty big to me for so early on...

Ambrosius · 02/05/2012 15:43

DS was 10lb 9oz at 41weeks. I was huuuuuge! Grin

moojie · 02/05/2012 16:14

Ds1 was 10lb born on his due date but unexpected as I was measuring right for dates.
Ds2 was 8lb 7oz at term +4 as predicted at 35 week growth scan.

MrsLister · 02/05/2012 16:20

I'm reading this thread with interest as was told at the 20 week scan our boy is 'at the top end of the scale'.

Alas both his father and I have big heads and it would appear he has inherited!

winces

Does big baby always = horrible birth in your experiences?

Gingerbreadlatte · 02/05/2012 17:35

Not necessarily Mrs Lister. I had my dd at home. Was intervention free. Also no pain relief as g&a made me sick and I was in the pool so didn't have the injection. It was pretty painful but not traumatic.

I do think a Hosp birth would have led to intervention for me as I wouldn't have been so relaxed (ish!!£

littlemiss26 · 02/05/2012 17:51

Well my first ds was 10lb 5 at 42+1 Weeks. I measured 1cm over throughout and everyone, consultant included, estimated him at 8 to 8.5 pounds.

Second ds was 7lb 1 at 39.5 Weeks, I measured bang on Weeks throughout, everyone expected him to be big. Midwives all the way through and hospital said he was definitely breech, as it was 'too big to be a head' Hmm.. They were wrong!

Currently 38.5 Weeks with ds 3 and have measured 4cm over throughout...who knows what he'll be, growth scan at 28 Weeks put him 1oz under 3lb at the time and a belief that he was going to be very talk, who knows what weight he'll be!

In summary, it appears to be random, not only in their estimations of weight, but in what your likely to get!

MrsLister · 02/05/2012 19:29

Thanks ginger

NutellaNutter · 02/05/2012 22:57

DS was born at 11 pounds 6 ounces at 38 weeks and 3 days' gestation. I had pre-eclampsia and was heading towards HELLP syndrome, and he was born via EMCS. I hate to think what would have happened if he'd been allowed to go full term. I already looked like I had swallowed a baby elephant, not helped by the fact I am only 5 foot 1.

I have been left with a bad case of abdominal separation, which I'll need surgery to fix. I still look as if I'm five months pregnant. Need to work on losing the baby weight first though, which is kind of a work in progress. Sigh....

Flickstar · 02/05/2012 23:11

Hi there, my bump has always measured exactly the right number of cms for weeks and yet I have been told that I'm having a giant baby! Was 1lb4oz at 22 weeks and 3lb2oz at 28 weeks-measuring on the 95th centile. We will just have to wait and see! Have another scan at 32weeks so will be interested to see how much he has apparently grown!

Fishpond · 03/05/2012 03:41

Hi Sam and flick Grin

My baby was 1lb2 at his 22 wk scan but unlike flick they told me it was perfectly normal. He was 1lb3 at a scan 6 days later.

Going to have a scan next week for growth as I have some possible early pre eclampsia symptoms, will be 30+2 so will let you all know what they say then.

Fishpond · 03/05/2012 03:43

Sorry he was 1lb3 at the 22+1 and 1lb4 at 23+0

CravingSleep · 03/05/2012 07:11

9 10 and 9 14. Both very long babies. Second baby I had a huge pph due to big baby and long labour but this is just as likely with a c section. Hospital staff fab though and its still unlikely I think.

cjdamoo · 03/05/2012 07:27

ds1 -8lb 10 term + 2 weeks
ds2 9lb 10 Term + 1 week
ds3 - 10lb 13oz Term
ds 4 - scanned at 36 weeks induced at 37 weeks due to "enourmous" baby 7lb 8oz!!!!!

dd1 9lb 5oz

all bar ds4 were natural great births.

Flisspaps · 03/05/2012 07:33

DD was a respectable 8lb 2oz at 40+16

DS was predicted to be 9 1/2 - 10 1/2 lb.

He was born 18 days ago at 40+11 weighing 11lb 7oz.

snowrevolution · 03/05/2012 12:11

NutellaNutter - interesting to see you had such a big baby at 38 weeks with pre-eclampsia. DS was born at 37 weeks (severe pre-eclampsia) and was 9lb 4oz, so somewhere over the 95th centile. He quickly slimmed down to around the 25th centile over the next few months, and has stayed there ever since. Can't help thinking the big birth weight was due to the pre-eclampsia, although conventional wisdom seems to be that this restricts growth so more likely to result in smaller babies!

WildRumpus · 03/05/2012 22:50

DD was 9lb 3oz and 56cm at 41+3
DS was 9lb 1oz and 54cm at 41+5

DD repeatedly measured very small. From 20 weeks onwards they scanned me every 2weeks to check that she was developing properly! Aged 5 she is still tall for her age - cruising along the 75th centile for height. With DS they just did the old tape measure on the tummy thing and kept telling me to expect a very large baby. Interestingly, although a pretty respectable sized baby, by the age of 3 he's dropped down to the 0.4th centile on his growth chart.

DH and I are 5'11 and 5'6 so neither very tall nor very short.

Now nearly 38 weeks with #3. Midwife says "this is not a small baby".

WildRumpus · 03/05/2012 22:53

Oh - Mrs Lister - having had 2 biggish babies I wouldn't say it made for bad births. Was lucky to have 2 pretty straightforward births with just gas & air. Fingers crossed for this one too.
