Can you ever tell the sex at 12 week scan?

I had an email this morning from some pregnancy site or other saying that as I was 12 weeks today, I might be able to find out the sex at my upcoming scan. I've gotten scan on Friday when I'll be 12 + 3, I would have thought this was much to early?

Anyone got any ideas?

Far too early to say with any degree of confidence I think. The pregnancy sites have some 'interesting' factoids sometimes!!

I've read that a very skilled sonographer might be able to. I had my 12 week scan not so long ago and it wasn't offered and she way too busy the whole time to think she'd have capacity to do that to. I came to the conclusion that perhaps you can pay for such a thing, but I'd be amazed if they did it at any routine 12 week scan. Just my thoughts on it though, I'm no expert.

It can be done but the accuracy rate is about 50% so you may as well just flip a coin. This is according to the sonographer a couple of weeks ago. I think 16 weeks is a much better time to get accuracy.

Depends on the equipment used but no at an nhs scan they won't tell you as routine. I had my dating scan at 13+4 and the sonographer said she was almost certain it was a boy from the way the nub was developing. She showed me what she meant and explained the differences between a girl and boy at that stage (slight differences). She was right!

I thought you couldn't but when midwife finished scanning me at 12+5 she said to my dd what would you like brother or sister obvs my dd said brother as she has a younger sister. Midwife said that's very intresting! After looking at my scan photo and looking at the nub theory it says boy. Went and had private scan at 16+1 and they told me was 99% sure was a boy they even showed me bits but couldn't work it out. So at my 20wk scan I asked again and she said 99% boy. So back to the start I wonder weather the midwife who done 12wk scan new then

I was told at my 12 week (nhs) scan that I was having a boy (and I did).

Nub theory has been correct for me previously and for three other mums I know.

Having my 12 week scan thurs and hoping to get a good picture of the nub!!

Thanks for staring this thread. I found out last time but I really don't want to this time, I want to experiance the excitment of not knowing... probably should have done it the other way round for pratical reasons!
So I will say the 12 week scan that I don't even want a hint... I didn't know they could tell then.

Good thread I was also wondering this, I have seen some u/s on you tube where it shows clearly at around 13 week but I was told by my last tech with last baby it is impossible to tell before 15 week this was 4 years ago tho. Got next scan in 7 days will ask again as I will be 12/13 week unsure due to irregular ovulation. Hope they can tell

I was told my baby was a girl by a barely qualified doctor looking at a blurry image of the baby on a second hand donated machine when I was 12 weeks pregnant. This is in Afghanistan where I am right now.
I checked again at 16 weeks, 20 weeks and 24 weeks. She is right. I am having a girl.
The same doctor told a bunch of women I know about the sex of their babies at 12/13 weeks pregnant and she was right all the time.
She claims she is just good.
So I suppose 12 weeks in the UK using a vey very high tech machine should be possible.

I have always been v suspicious of "theories", but it really does seem there's something to nub theory. It would have been right with my first two DS (but it's always easy in hindsight) - however I tried with my 12 week scan pictures for my last baby before she arrived - it said girl, and it was a girl. I also did the same on my DSis who was also preg - it said boy and was a boy.

I've just looked at our 13 week scan - I can't tell what might be a nub or a leg!

My friend had a 12 week scan a month ago and asked if they could tell and she said was told they are having a boy.
On my 12 week pictures you could see it was a boy but they refused to say, then at the 20 week scan admitted they could tell at the 12 week but dont like to say.

Betty It is a little difficult as the legs aren't straight.

But, I would say, the point that is at an angle - between the two white masses in the genital area - you see it's angled up?

I would say a boy if that was my photo, following the nub theory.

You will have to let us know when you find out!

A good scanning machine (better than most NHS machines) makes it possible to check gender at 12 weeks. I found out at 11+5 both times by going to the Fetal Medicine Centre on Harley Street. It's run my Prof Nicolaides who invented the nuchal scan and is a real pioneer. The clinic looked for the structure of the ovaries and found them both times so correctly predicted by two girls. At that age the structure of the ovaries is easier to detect than outside genitalia.

The angle of the dangle/nub theory is quite accurate apparently.

I have heard that boys will see the placenta on the right of the uterus 97% of the time.

If you look at the spine, it kind of splits into 2 at the end. Then above that is what I assumed is the nub after looking through countless nub theory sites.

The nub is angled up, indicating a boy. He was, and still is in fact, a very bouncy 8lb 8oz Boy!
