have just put a progesterone pessary up there, and came across what i belive to be my cervix, it was large with a dip in the centre the dip was about a finger or 2 in diameter- is my cervix open????

i am paranoid as am high risk for preterm labour, i have not felt my cervix before so do not know what it should be like. does anyone know if this is normal?

was it firm?
an "unripe" cervix feels like the tip of your nose
a ripe one like your lips
how many weeks are you

slinkstah · 30/01/2006 00:47

im 19 weeks, it felt quite soft to touch much softer in the middle dip bit. i came out quite quick as got freaked out. do you think i should go to the clinic tomorrow to get them to check?

I've no idea about this sorry. I would go and ask them to check, if only to set your mind at rest. Best wishes.

I do know (after talking to Ch) that your cervix always stays open slightly after having kids but ask your mw to be on the safe side. xx

slinkstah · 30/01/2006 10:09

maybe i shouldn't panic then, i have my 20 weeks scan tommorrow and hopefully will get to see a midwife too, if i do, maybe ill ask for someone to have a quick peek.
although will have another quick feel when putting my next pessary in, which ill do in about an hour.

I've never been able to feel my vervix except in labour. When I started dliating with dd I felt it, sort of a firm bump but I could feel the lips of the edges all the way around the bump.

kreamkrackers · 30/01/2006 12:56

tbh i'd phone the mw and ask her, non of us our experts. maybe it's nothing to worry about but some people have to have a cirvical stitch so maybe you need one of those. i really have no idea though and probably shouldn't post on here but if i was you i'd ask an expert.

dangirl · 30/01/2006 14:56

slinkstah - sorry to hear of your worries
To be honest then I think that 2 fingers width is too much. The opening does change shape after having given birth but I don't believe you should be able to insert 2 fingers.
I would call midwifes today and get their advice.

Hope it is all just nothing!!!

Best of luck and thinking of you

Slink - I didn't realise you could feel your cervix, i would have thought it was much further up inside you than a finger length. shouldn't imagine thats what you felt, but i could be wrong, and knowing your history i would say you should get it checked out just to be sure.

starlover · 30/01/2006 16:00

she didn't say it was a finger length up~!

i can feel mine, and i'm not pregnant or anything!

harpsichordcarrier · 30/01/2006 16:03

yes you can feel it, otherwise how could mw's do internals?
and it does have a "dip" in the middle, that dosn't mean it's open necessarily
but no, we'er not experts
If you are worried, definitely go it checked out
hope everything is ok
HC xx

to see if they can? what's wrong with feeling your cervix?

harpsichordcarrier · 30/01/2006 16:06

happymumof2, why on earth would it make you cringe to touch your cervix
really I have heard it all now

starlover · 30/01/2006 16:07

no different to picking your nose, or putting your finger in your mouth... it's YOUR body!

kreamkrackers · 30/01/2006 16:15

when ttc it's a way of finding out if you're ov instead of spending loads of money on ov predictor tests. also if a mw can do it to check everythings ok or anyone else than why not? i must admit i felt mine a couple of days ago to see whether i was having another mc, i can feel it's low down and only open the slightly (about 1/4 finger!). when having mc it opened to about 1 finger length. i am a bit worried as to why it's low down though but i'm having a scan in two weeks time to see what's going on. sorry all this is going to be tmi for some of you

NotQuiteCockney · 30/01/2006 16:16

It's not comfortable, having your cervix touched, is it?

I can only just reach mine. Although I'm reasonably familiar with it, having worn diaphragms for a while.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/01/2006 16:17

How can you tell if you're ov by feeling your cervix?

kreamkrackers · 30/01/2006 16:25

when it feels softer, higher and perhaps slightly open you're ov.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/01/2006 16:26

ah ha! You learn something new everyday!

well thank you all, i never thought of that, mW's checking it etc. wonder fi i can feel mine now.

kreamkrackers · 30/01/2006 16:47

well i guess it's not for everyone but it's your body so why not? i wouldn't stick my fingers up my bum hole to examine that but it's your cervix which tells you a lot about what can be going on with your fertility and pregnancy so why not? if women had more confidence to do it they might check themselves that they're in established labour before making a dash to the hospital. also like i said, i checked to see whether i was having another mc. it's just a way of examining yourself, nothing wrong with that imo.
